Oooh...I like this one. Jay, I like how you phrased it: "What kind of BEER does he drink," so you're assuming, as I do, that he's an beer fan. I just can't picture him as a Martini drinker, like Dean Martin. I can't use brand names, since I don't know about regional (let alone other countries!) distribution of any particular beer, but I like to picture him sipping on a pint glass of nice, stout, dark, ale. You know, "beer you can chew." None of that wimpy, watery, see-through beer like Coors or Bud for our Robyn. (No offense to fans of these beers intended, really!) :) Barring that, I see him enjoying a pint of the slightly lighter-colored, amber ales. I'll post the results later after regaining my hearing and checking for any tape meltdown. Also! Bonus! Upon being hard-pressed to find a birthday gift for my sister, who introduced me to Robyn's music, I recall reading about Trudi (or was it Sandi) who was presented with a copy of Robyn's birth certificate. Remembering this, I sprinted as fast as the bus could take me to St. Catherine's House at Aldwych. This is home to the Office of Population and Census Services. In the big red book marked E-K March 1953, listed as being page 184 d, born on March 3, 1953 near Paddington, was Robyn Hitchcock. I bought my sister a little copy of history for six pounds. Now I know what you are saying: "Todd, I would love to get hold of a copy of this, but I lack the flight equipment, plus I may not have six pounds to purchase said copy." Worry no more! Later today I will be scanning my copy and trying to zap it through the system to reach fegmaniax as a file fit for printing so that all may view this document that bears more importance than most baseball contracts. Also, I'd just like to say that Zima tastes terrible, and I will try to see what Robyn is drinking at Dingwalls'. I would think that the natural answer would be, what else?: BASS Cheers with a nice cool pint of Bass, Todd ;} [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 13:22:57 +0100 (MET) From: Sebastian Hagedorn To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Robyn in Nijmegen - Fast Forward? Hi! I heard that Robyn's gonna play at a festival in Nijmegen, Netherlands in April. I think the festival's name is Fast Forward, but I'm not sure. It's basically a home taper's festival, i.e. bands without record contracts. Now that Robyn is without a label he would fit that bill. Can anybody confirm this? I can't imagine... Oh John, this is a blessed day. Thanks for asking and posting about that tracklisting. I only recognize seven out of the 22...birdshead made it onto the pave the earth cd comp, ghost ship is a balloon man B-side (also heard very briefly fading out between songs on _globe of frogs_, and in the GLtHO video I hear), Victorian Squid and Sept Cones are very rare concert numbers, Mr Rock 'n Roll and Surgery are _Queen Elvis_ outtakes (surgery was also on flexi) Polly on the Shore was a Fairport Convention song, found on the A&M covers session. All the rest are unknown. According to my calculations, the collection clocks in at over 70 minutes-- almost twice as long as _Respect_. I'm looking forward to the end of March. bayard [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 14:56:02 +0000 (GMT) From: "Espen H. The one thing that has struck me about Robyn Hitchcock's work is that it is so brilliant that I can only assume that he does NOT use drugs when he is creating it. For 'recreational' purposes I have no idea, but when it comes to art, one of my sisters art teachers come to mind "Most art created under the influence of drugs is crap. Genius is unaffected by drugs, but they will certainly lead you to believe that what you are doing is great, inhibiting your critical senses. To an artist the only critic of importance is themself, but they can't be artists without it." (free from memory). It's too bad that Live Man Die isn't on You & Oblivion. I read somewhere (CMJ maybe) Robyn saying that he defied collectors to have even ever heard of the songs on You & Oblivion, and he was right, except for a few of them, I have never heard of them. I believe it was written after Robyn had some sort of surgery (abdominal I think--anyone remember? Those of you with advance copies of the "Hen Out" reissue might find a mention of this in the liner notes, as I believe the surgery took place right before that concert). "Ghost Ship" is another tune that first saw the light of day on the "Hen Out" video...there are a couple of short segments showing RH sitting on a stool strumming & singing this tune. It also runs backwards over the closing credits (and I think the opening credits...it's been awhile since I've watched this). A while back I dubbed the backwards stuff onto a reel and reversed it, then spliced it together with all the short pieces. It's pretty different from the version that came out on the CD-3--basically a work in progress. "Victorian Squid"--great tune! I'm so glad this is finally going to be released! "August Hair"...the title sure sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it. I think I may have this on an old tape. The journey concluded in December of whatever year that was (1987 or 1989 I think) which means the editing was probably done in the first part of the following year.
