[][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 11:49:24 -0500 From: owner-fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Yessiree folks, I presently have in my grubbly little hands the latest three Rhino reissues. Actually, they're promos send to my radio station, but I got 'em anyway. Overall, the improvement in sound quality is *astounding.* Whoever remastered these things did one helluva job. "Element of Light" has always been one of my favorite albums, not only for its content and the band's effortless and easy playing, but for its bright, clear, sharp sound and crisp imaging. On the Rhino rerelease, I'm hearing background vocals and keyboard tracks I didn't know existed. It gives me shivers. About the extra tracks: EoL: "The Can Opener" -- what can I say? Finally on CD! Woo-woo! The demos remind me of Pete Townshend's "Scoop" albums -- they seem very early versions, b/c Robyn doesn't seem to have become comfortable with the song's tempos and bridges and such. But excellent for completists like me, though. The "Raymond Chandler Evening" demo is done on a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar and a stand-up bass, and that makes it very interesting (i.e., sounds like it was done at the IODOT sessions), but it's also got some weird synthesized cornet and flutes in it that kinda blow the mood. The "If You Were a Priest" demo is very electric and very raw. Also very out of tune. The lyrics are almost completely different. The live recording of "Airscape" is dedicated to Cynthia (!). The liner notes don't say when or where it was recorded. Sheesh. The nerve. "The President" demo is solo acoustic -- reminds me of a song from Eye, like "Aquarium." "The Leopard" demo is also done with a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar and is absolutely delicious -- I just love that song. fegMANIA: "Egyptian Cream" done with a drum machine and a (monophonic?) synthesizer. It's slow, creepy, and amazing. Recorded at Matthew Seligman's place (probably the same time/place that "Messages of Dark" and "Mr. Death" were done -- sounds just like those songs.) Also amazing is the "Insect Mother (Smithsound Demo)" cut -- seems this song was originally recorded during the IODOT sessions but wasn't included. Quite a gem, this. A full, unedited "The Pit of Souls (Parts 1-IV)". I didn't know the version on Invisible Hitchcock was shortened. This one is much cooler. You also get live recordings of "Heaven" and "Egyptian Cream" which are very nice. Again, no dates or locations. I suspect "Egyptian Cream" was recording during the 1992 tour, b/c Morris is playing those synthesized tablas and it's very laid back. These cuts makes me think that Robyn must have a closet full of live tapes that would translate very nice to CD reissues. (Hey, I can dream, can't I?) Gotta Let This Hen Out! Wow, now I can really hear what Roger Jackson is playing (and Robyn is right -- he does overplay). No new songs of course, but the remastering makes it worth buying if you own the original. Well, there ya have it folks. Hope these reviews helped. Don't know when these'll hit the stores, but I can't wait till they do. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + gene@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu Writer/Layout/WWW Guy + Tulane Computing Services http://yodelling-hoover.tcs.tulane.edu/GeneHome.html =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ "Money feeds my music machine" -- The Lemon Pipers [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 12:46:44 -0500 From: owner-fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Chicago Tribune, Friday, January 27, 1995 ----- PLAY ON, by Greg Kot ----- Beginning this week, Rhino Records will release nine CDs documenting the largely overlooked early to mid-'80s solo career of Robyn Hitchcock. The first three, out now, were recorded after Hitchcock's first band, the Soft Boys, broke up: ``Black Snake Diamond Role,'' ``Gravy Deco'' and ``I Often Dream of Trains.'' Outfitted with bonus tracks and liner notes, the discs affirm the staying power of Hitchcock's subversive popcraft. ``Black Snake Diamond Role'' (1981 ****) is among Hitchcock's finest albums, a work of hilarity both satiric (``Do Policemen Sing?'') and dark (``Brenda's Iron Sledge''), yet tinged with remarkable tenderness (``Acid Bird''). Melodic and intelligent, the work includes a bent bonus track, ``Happy the Golden Prince,'' that touches on Hitchcock's fascination with the unappetizing details of the insect (and reptile) world. This tendency would come to intrude on some of his later work, but it's more like a novelty here. The patched together ``Gravy Deco'' (1982 **1/2) reflects Hitchcock's unhappiness at the time. In contrast to the casual atmosphere of ``Black Snake,'' he was paired with producer Steve Hillage in a big-budget session for an album titled ``Groovy Decay.'' Disgusted with the results, Hitchcock later released the stripped-down demo tapes as ``Groovy Decoy.'' Tracks from both comprise ``Gravy Deco,'' and it's a mess. After taking two years off, Hitchcock recorded the spare ``I Often Dream of Trains'' (1984 ****) largely by himself, but it lacks nothing---an emotionally riveting, musically accomplished tour de force. It includes some of Hitchcock's most enduring concert staples, including the Pythonesque ``Uncorrected Personality Traits'' and the lovely ``Cathedral.'' Subsequent Rhino releases will include one of Hitchcock's most accomplished pop albums, ``Fegmania,'' as well as the live ``Gotta Let This Hen Out!'' and the more oblique ``Element of Light'' in February. These will be followed in March by reissued (``Invisible Hitchcock'') and new (``You and Oblivion'') rarities collections, plus the solo ``Eye'' disc from 1990. Subsequent to most of these albums, Hitchcock has achieved a new level of commercial prominence, thanks to the name-dropping of friends like R.E.M., but the Rhino reissues contain the core of his legacy. With the exception of the Soft Boys' ``Underwater Moonlight,'' there is no better Hitchcock anywhere than on ``Black Snake Diamond Role'' and ``I Often Dream of Trains.'' ----- For comparison, Greg Kot also reviews Van Halen's ``Balence'' in the same column, giving it **1/2 stars (the same rating he gives ``Gravy Deco''). Some quotes from the ``Balance'' review follow: ``Long gone are the cartoon days of David Lee Roth, when the band's heavy- handed assault was tempered by humor.'' ``Lying somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Bon Jovi on the hipness scale, this is a band that would seem to be hopelessly out of touch with the new breed of rockers selling records in Van Halen-like numbers, from Stone Temple Pilots to Pearl Jam.'' To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Okay, here's the question. I just got 'Stand Back, Dennis' in the mail, and it's pretty good, even though the vocals do indeed get distorted occasionally. And I'm sad that an otherwise brilliant version of 'Airscape' is marred by a poor mix (specifically an overly loud bell/glass harmonium). But anyways, my question is, when did this gig actually take place? There are two dates on the CD. The date on the back cover is 2/3/88, while the date on the cover-booklet is 3/25/88. Which is the right one? Also...to JoJones- what's the deal with that strange tape you got from Aidan? Finally, if anybody's interested, the booklet to the 'Invisible History' CD (which is an EXCELLENT compilation) features a poem by Robyn which apparently appeared in Bucketful of Brains #2....if people are curious to read it, let me know and I'll post it. It's pretty cool- features screwdrivers and a city of potted shrimp. daveR. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | "I promised only that you would see some sign of Unicorns, and so | | you have...As for you and your heart and the things you | | said and didn't say, she will remember them all when | | men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits..." | | | | | | -The Last Unicorn | |______________________________________________________________________| *** Another 100% natural S.M.I.L.B.U. production *** [][][][][][][][][][] From: daramsey@vaxsar.vassar.edu Date: 22 Feb 1995 16:37:40 -0300 Subject: YAY!!! Sounds interesting. But does it have the Pina Colada song? : ) daveR: Hi! I'd like to see Robyn's poem. So here's one vote to see it posted. And I've meaning to ask the experts out there: When Queen Elvis came out, our local alternative radio d.j. (AM station) used to play Madonna of the Wasps, and she'd always call them "Robyn Hitchcock and the NEW Egyptians." What up there? Was she just making a mistake (repeatedly) or were they ever called that? She also used to do an imitation of him. She'd start singing "MaDONNER of the Wasps," pronouncing the "R." Cute. I was reminded of this when someone said he called Cynthia, Cynthier. Also, does anyone know where I can get a picture of Robyn (the man, not an album cover) that I can use as computer wallpaper that does not take up a lot of room? I've tried using the pictures on the Fegmaniax page, but my computer doesn't have enough room. I was wondering if there's a simple little photo out there that doesn't take up too much space. Now, however, I see that she plans to paste a little digitized image of our hero into Windows and have it come up in the background of her workspace all the time. Good idea, I know I'd work better with Robyn watching me all the time from the darkness behind my screen. :) Sharon, I think that DJ better stick with AM radio. She was probably making either a mistake or a (rather bad) joke with Edie Brickell in mind. Y'know, Edie Brickell and New Indonesians? (-:p Either that or she considered the Hitchcock/Metcalfe/Windsor/Jackson lineup to be the "Original" Egyptians, anything else a cheap imitation, and all of us lesser fans than she, who got to see them at the Marquee on my birthday in 1985. I really hate djs like that. On the other hand, maybe she's just kidding around. Sorry I don't know how to do homemade wallpaper but I'll have a look at my pc and see what I can figure out.win whoops, wrong keyboard. ok, as it happens I've got the 'egyptian" wallpaper selected right now.... ok, looks like you need a .bmp graphics file in your WINDOWS directory. If some graphically talented person could scan one and upload it to the fegmania ftp site, it should be a simple matter for you to ftp to the site, download the graphic, go to "main" program group and then click on Control panel... click on wallpaper and choose robyn.bmp (or whatever). I beleive there's a big bmp of robyn and the boys there on fegmania.wustl.edu already. If you have any questions about any of this feel free to email me. best of luck-- bayard [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 22:31:53 -0800 (PST) From: Bayard Catron Subject: Re: new stuff To: dark birds On Tue, 21 Feb 1995, David Librik remarked: > >Has anyone got the New mini-CD with I Something You, etc? > [....] it's only out on 7". For those of you who are within a reasonable distance, and who are interested: Planet Records has a 20-song Robyn/Rhino sampler for $20. Nuggets has the same 20-song sampler for $20. Nuggets also has two (original) copies of BSDR, with slightly different tints to the covers, for $10 apiece; one copy of Groovy Decay (yes, Decay) for $10; a copy of Gravy Deco with the now-in-fashion "sale is illegal" gold lettering on the cover; and a bunch of less worthwhile stuff. Kenmore Square is, of course, right on the Green Line. To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Okay, here's the poem from the 'Invisible History' CD. Umm...I guess the copyright belongs either to Bucketful of Brains or Robyn. I don't have permission from either of the above entities to spread this poem around, but I don't imagine that B.o.B. or Robyn would mind too much. Here it is: I got a screwdriver And I'm gonna unscrew you. So you can fly up into the air And bounce on and off the ceiling In the city of potted shrimps You will be a springing oasis All the things you say Could be scattered and torn to the winds But you can dance like a fire hydrant And crawl on and off a pencil sharpener In a room full of ferns You will be a pulsating fever I'm tattooed and my fist is held -won't you give me a new cover?... All the tents are full of mad people Who chew their fists and don't know how to Float on time- without getting very wet. Soon the chain is gonna come That blurts out freedom from its blood And floods the world with poisoned love. cheers, daveR. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | "I promised only that you would see some sign of Unicorns, and so | | you have...As for you and your heart and the things you | | said and didn't say, she will remember them all when | | men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits..." | | | | | | -The Last Unicorn | |______________________________________________________________________| *** Another 100% natural S.M.I.L.B.U. production *** [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 21:51:26 -0800 (PST) From: Francis Owen McDonnell To: Balloon Man cc: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: CRD: Radio Storm As for "Radio Storm," I was always under the impression that the chorus went: D / Gsus4 (in open position) / Cmaj7+D / A (give or take the 7th) The bridge is: C / D / F / C / G / A (again give or take the 7th) - Frank McDonnell fmcdonne@reed.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Wed, 22 Feb 95 08:13 GMT+0200 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: hardaker@iaccess.za (Mike Hardaker) Subject: Getting Wallpaper (a guide) OK, here's how to get a Robyn Hitchcock wallpaper for your Windows system. Users of other operating systems can probably deduce where to change what I say here. 1. First find your picture. I'd look here: http://uvacs.cs.virginia.edu/~mad5c/fegmaniax/pictures.html http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/users/andyh/music/robyn_gallery.html ftp://fegmania.wustl.edu/fegmaniax/pictures ftp://fegmania.wustl.edu/fegmaniax/uploads 2. Download it 3. It will almost certainly be in JPEG or GIF format, so it needs converting to something Windows can understand in native form. You have the choice of BMP or RLE (which takes up less space on disk). The tool of choice for coverting to/from JPG, GIF, BMP, RLE and just about anything else - including, for all I know, egg tempera - is Pain Shop Pro, which can be found as: ftp://ftp.cica.indiana.edu/pub/pc/win3/desktop/pspro200.zip When converting to either BMP or RLE, make sure that you select Windows as your subtype - an OS/2 bitmap is no earthly use to man nor beast. 4. Fire up File Manager and Control Panel's Desktop applet. Tile them (using Task Manager). 5. Find your BMP or RLE in File Manager and drag it over to the Desktop dialog. Drop it on or near the Wallpaper section. Make sure that Centred (rather than Tiled) is selected. 6. Close all the programs you've been using and admire your handywork. 7. If you want the picture to be off-centre on your screen, edit \WINDOWS\WIN.INI with Notepad and add the following lines to the [Desktop] section: WallPaperOriginX=nn WallPaperOriginY=nn where 'nn' represents the number of pixels you want the left and top of the picture to be from the left and top of the screen. You can use a negative number to have the wallpaper creeping off-screen a little, but settings of zero put the picture back in the middle. SXSW shows have not been fully layed out..who's playing where and when...lastI heard...if you wanna be sure you get into a show you need a wrist band, ...or pay the 290$ for the full confernce(all the shows and the conference)...shows have three or four acts playing at a venue, each one about 45 minutes long... if you're not one of the wrist-banded or conference-officinados you have to stand on line with the rest of us unwashed masses...in other words it can be a bit of a crap shoot...if you want more info there are a few Austin fegs who I'm sure can find out or I can see what I can find...I've pawned off the responsibility for my tickets to a couple of friends up there that are banded... 2. I already have converted the Globe of Frogs cover painting into a bmp file I use as wall paper and can send that out to anyone who wants it...and if its a slow day in the office I can convert other of the fegmaniax site jpgs or gifs into bmps or send a viewer that will make the coversions(its Lview so the quality varies) 3.
