To: Fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Hey, I just picked up the three re-issues, so here's my 2 cents: I really dig the BSDR CD. The bonus tracks are excellent, it's especially nice to have 'Happy...' on CD. The new version of 'It Was the Night' is very cool, with the more pronounced distorted guitar. 'Dancing on God's Thumb' still kinda annoys me, as does the new version of 'I Watch the Cars', which isn't really any improvement over the old version. And the new version of 'Man Who Invented...' is great, though I like the old one just as much. The IODOT CD is cool, though the bonus tracks (demo versions of stuff on the original CD) are really not terribly exciting at all. They sound basically like poor, somewhat muffled versions of the finished versions. However the liner notes are great, including a new comic strip and the 'Fegballs' poem from the lp. Gravy Deco is pretty nice, as it compiles the various versions of these tracks...the two bonus tracks are a bit iffy, IMHO. The disco version of 'Nightride to Trinidad' is cool, the disco version of 'Kingdom of Love' kinda sucks... In all, Rhino's done an excellent job, I think. The CDs are beautiful, with great covers, great paintings on the CDs themselves, and excellent liner notes. And, in case people are still wondering, on the little card that comes in the CDs 'bout referring your friends to Rhino and scoring a Robyn lithograph, it says that the offer is good until "May 31, 1995. Nothing will be accepted after this date." daveR. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | "I promised only that you would see some sign of Unicorns, and so | | you have...As for you and your heart and the things you | | said and didn't say, she will remember them all when | | men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits..." | | | | | | -The Last Unicorn | |______________________________________________________________________| *** Another 100% natural S.M.I.L.B.U. production *** [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 17 Feb 1995 00:23:38 -0600 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: jmittell@students.wisc.edu (Jajasoon Tlitteu) Subject: Austin show I have been perusing info for the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin & Robyn is listed as one of the performers. I'm a bit new to all of this {frantic arm gesture in direction of computer} so forgive me if this appears a bit novice. I found the Robyn home page yesterday on the ubl and have found mecca. So, without a slight delay, here is some background info: Me: Todd Hagley Where: London, England {Deptford to be precise} No. of Robyn's albums in collection: 11, not including Soft Boys 76-81 although my sister's colections combines for every album No. of concerts attended: 1, but I have tickets to the March 2nd gig at Dingwalls in Camden where Robyn saw the Vibrators shortly after formation of the Soft Boys Star Sign: Pisces Yeah, I know it sounds a bit wank, but please give me time, and I should adjust. I read the stuff sent my way this morning, and I have to ask if anyone else saw Robyn doing "My Wife and My Dead Wife" on the Perspex tour. This was January 21(?), 1991 in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse. He did his whole monolouge about Tony Bennett and Mel Torme, actually substituting "Mel? She said" for "Robyn? She said" So why should he take the lounge act any further? For the Lennon tribute, wouldn't it be fair to offer "Cold Turkey" as a choice track? I know it's about as old as the track Lennon did, but hey, it is a good cover. Besides, Happiness is a Warm Gun is more Beatlesesque than just Lennon. That's just my opinion. By the way, I read in the chronology that Robyn invented himself on March 3rd, 1953. This is true, right? I don't want to sound like a schmuck if I yell "Happy Birthday" at the Dingwall's gig and it's not true. Well, I have to run. Talk to ya'll later. I just spent a pleasant evening seeing some friends in an acoustic show on the east side. One of my friends happens to be a free-lance contract artist (layouts and other stuff) for Rhino Records. She told me she just recently finished structuring the covers & "booklets" for _Eye_, _Invisible H_, and _You & Oblivion_. The interesting thing to note is that the entire story _The Professor_ will be included. It will be split into two parts; the 1st on _Y&O_, the 2nd on _IH_. Oddly enough, she also mentioned that none of the "Wight" story appears on the new _Eye_. She said she spoke to Robyn to get an understanding of what he wanted, and in the course of the conversation, he asked her: "Where do you live?" "NYC, Upper West Side," she said. "Are there many trap doors in your neighborhood?" Was his next question. "I don't know" she replied. She told me that since having had that conversation she now notices that there are, indeed, trap doors everywhere in this city. Cheers, N. But March 2nd is close enough, so go ahead and yell "Happy Birthday" at the Dingwall gig. Which reminds of the prank somebody played on him at the Kennel Club gig in San Francisco in May, 1991. Someone brought a cake with candles out on stage and got the audience to sing happy birthday to him. Disrupted the flow of the gig, he was kind of both bemused and annoyed, and had to finally tell the crowd "Fuck off, it's not my birthday!" The funny part is that no one believed him. He said a "Man on a flaming pancake" came down and said that they were to be "the Beatles with an A". And they said "Thank You Mr Man". Wish I remember the whole story verbatim, or even where I saw it originally. Anyway, I figure it's the same guy, but this time he's putting in an appearance to name the Soft Boys. Or maybe it's one of his cousins, who has a different kind of conveyance. 2- I've been mentally perusing the lyrics I can remember for a mention of a throne. Now Robyn's music isn't exactly strewn with royalty: there's Queen Elvis, the Veins of the Queen, and Happy the Golden Prince, and I can't think of any others off the top of my head. However, the only mention I can remember of an actual throne is in Furry Green Atom Bowl, where the Devil is "rapping his fingers on a golden throne". So there you go, it could be the Devil. And of course there's the obvious connection between the Devil and the Jack-o-Lanterns, but I won't go into that, because it further clouds the issue of the mysterious melonhead. He seemed kind of surprised, but told me about his work with James Fletcher, who is apparently a reclusive and stubborn type of person. I asked if he had any more of "The Professor," and he said that there was another chapter or so, but that Fletcher had everything now. That's right, toothpaste. The kind of thing some like to have princesses unscrew, or make statues out of. If your _Dennis_ skip is due to a factory defect though, Eugene, you may be best off exchanging it-- I guess they would not take too kindly to getting it back all covered in Colgate. Worked like a dream on my Element of Light CD, though. Just scrub gently in a circular motion, rince and dry well. Fills those tiny anomalies right up. Now I am no longer obligated to get the reissue (though I think I will). On another note, what kind of databases does anyone recommend? In the long run I'd like to make my Robynbase available to the general feg-public and I'd like to have it in a format that the most people can access. (The Robynbase is a databank of all known RH appearances, concerts, interviews, etc, eventually with setlists and reviews. Hopefully I can get it into an independently-running program anyone can use, maybe even put it online, perhaps someday link it to the home pages. It's kind of in limbo right now, which is really bumming me since I owe some people setlists (hello Marge, Jonathan.)) Any help appreciated. I've done a bunch of posts to alt.databases with no response. Especially useful of course are flexible date fields (for dates lacking month and/or day) and flexible memo fields (for importing set lists into tape cover publishers). regards, bayard [][][][][][][][][][] From: AMcCon@aol.com Date: Fri, 17 Feb 1995 22:01:22 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: My Wife And My Dead Wife On Fri, Feb 17, Todd Hagley wrote: "I have to ask if anyone else saw Robyn doing "My Wife and My Dead Wife" on the Perspex tour.
