Golden" To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: SB: Live at the Portland Arms Hi everyone - I have a question I was sitting around my house the other day and decided to put on one of my favorite LPs of all time- the Soft Boys "Live at the Portland Arms". I absolutely love this record. I happened upon it 5-6 years ago at a record store in NYC while I was visiting one time, and freaked. I bought it, listened to it, and was completely amazed. I think it was this album that completely convinced me that the Soft Boys were the best band ever. ANYWAY - enough of my beautiful little story- Is this EVER going to be re-released? I know for a fact there were plans ages ago to release it on CD. I have an old magazine (don't know which one. B.O.B. maybe?) that has an excellent RH/SB article in it. In the same mag, it has a nice little ad/cartoon drawn by Robyn himself that mentions that "soon" the "Portland Arms" recording would be released on CD, as well as the "Maureen and the Meatpackers" stuff. What gives? And does anyone have a copy of the version of "Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole" that was supposedly one of the 2 songs that were left off of this live acoustic gem? (The other one being the "Postman's Knock" that I only recently heard on the Invisible History CD). HELP! AND - while I'm on the subject, if there are NO plans to release it on CD, how hard would it be to convince Robyn/Glass Fish to let a private source (i.e. US) fund a limited release of it? I've always been confused about this sort of thing. thanks clint [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 13 Feb 1995 10:31:20 -0500 From: bj835@cleveland.freenet.edu (Tim Connors) To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: GbV Allow me to third the recommendation for Guided by Voices. They get a lot of press here in Cleveland, because they're on a local label, Scat. The band itself is from Dayton, Ohio. In this case the hype is valid. If I had to describe the music I would say it sounds like a Scott Miller of Game Theory did a Vulcan mindmeld with Paul Westerberg of the Replacements and they recorded a bunch of catchy goofy smart loud crunchy guitar songs in somebaody's basement. I'm wondering if this is because of additional red tape, or what. I've never heard either of the Byrds covers, The Bells of Rhymney (sp?) or 8 Miles High. Kung Fu Fighting was an A&M-era release, as was 8 Miles High, so I wouldn't expect either of them to appear on the Rhino releases, though. Why is KFF mentioned on Eye? I'm guess that's a cryptic pointer to the Anti-Poll-Tax Trax compilation. Well, although Kung Fu Fighting was an A&M-era release, it wasn't released by A&M. The Alvin Live in Leeds (or whatever it was called), the anti-poll tax compilation, wasn't A&M, but Glass Fish. So it would be pretty easy to stick that one on the rarities album, if Robyn chose to do so. (And let's hope he does.) Even if A&M did hold the rights to it, however, they could easily license it to appear on the Rhino reissues anyway. Re-licensing of re-issue tracks to other labels isn't all that rare, particularly when a label has no further plans for an artist (i.e. it's likely that A&M are done with Robyn, and foresee no need to withhold those tracks for a box set, or in case he suddenly hits it big). Besides, Rhino is kind of the Switzerland of labels - they can get a license to reissue stuff because of their "neutrality" which other labels can't. Of course, in the not too distant future re-issue licenses won't be a problem, because there will be only one big record label, which will hold rights to all the things ever-recorded. :^) Andy / ruppen@demog.berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 13 Feb 1995 12:03:42 -0800 From: Douglas Asherman To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu, mad5c@server.cs.virginia.edu Subject: Re: add-on tracks, etc Mike (real name: mad5c@server.cs.virginia.edu) says: >I've been a little surprised to see none of the covers appearing as >add-on tracks on the Rhino releases. The new versions of Invented himself, Watch the Cars and It was the night are cool. Nice to have HTGP on cd at last, as many have said. I think this disc does sound better than the older one. I hope Fegmania! sounds better too-- as I remember, Robyn did the mixing on that one and was a bit impatient. He claims it's all Kimberley's fault for deafening him. BTW, nice theory on the SB 1976-81 band painting, Mike, but how do you explain "kimberley's" cokebottle bustline? Would RH be so bold as to change the sex of the loudest soft boy, and make him a fish-scarved saint in the process? By the way, I too am a firm believer in the "single Y theory." (big grin) Life of Brian aside, religious implications are not too far fetched when dealing with Syd... along with the VU and a very few others, the Son of Nothing affected "punk" and "alternative" styles as much as (insert big group name here) affected mainstream rock. Truly a messiah of modern music. Any actual resemblance to JC (or JBC)is incidental. Noone can deny that Beck has some dope beats. I still think a collaboration would be interesting. Or how about Trent Reznor-- RH dropped his name a lot as an icon of this generation when introducing "yip". Here's an interesting bit from _the downward spiral_: 'she spreads herself wide open to let the insects in she leaves a trail of honey to show me where she's been she has the blood of reptile just underneath her skin seeds from a thouseand others drop down from within' -nine inch nails, 'reptile' of course the music is not very robynian.(HARD.)it's almost 100% negative as well (more SBlike). I'm not too far into any of these dudes. But it would be neat to hear a joint effort.
