So I guess it's not such a far fetched concept. It contains some of the most beautifully melodic/rockin'/lyrically obtuse songs that I've heard in years. And to bring this round to a Robyn connection, the lead singer of Guided by Voices, Robert Pollard, when asked what his ultimate concert line-up would be, said, along with a couple other bands that the Soft Boys would have to be on the bill. And Robert Pollard has stated in several interviews that "Underwater Moonlight" is one of his top ten favorite records of all time. So, kids, go NOW and check out 'Bee Thousand' and prepare yourselves to be amazed. And to Pam- have ya heard 'bout the GbV box set coming out on the 28th? I cannot wait! It is going to be absolutely brilliant, I am positive...and of course the new album, 'Alien Lanes' is comin' out in March...rock on! daveR. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | "I promised only that you would see some sign of Unicorns, and so | | you have...As for you and your heart and the things you | | said and didn't say, she will remember them all when | | men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits..." | | | | | | -The Last Unicorn | |______________________________________________________________________| *** Another 100% natural S.M.I.L.B.U. production *** [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 11 Feb 1995 16:40:49 -0500 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu From: jojones@mailbox.syr.edu (John B. Jones) Subject: Taping in the presence of giants (Part II) I promised to finish my story, so here it is (much to your collective dismay probably, but.....): We left off last time with me beating myself up for not realizing what an incredible genius of an artist Robyn is. The knowledge came to me after finding and buying all of the man's releases (including Soft Boys) The guilt that came from exiting his solo performance early never left me, and I found myself wondering if there was some way to make restitution for my sin. The answer came in the form of a contact I made through the classifieds of a music magazine. A guy in San Francisco had placed an ad in a UK magazine looking for live Sundays shows. I thought "Wow, this is weird" for I had been to a Sundays show a few months earlier and had brought my cheapie little handheld recorder to tape the show for my own personal enjoyment. I had no idea that anyone else besides me would want it. I wrote him and told him of the show I taped, and he in turn sent me a list of shows that he had to trade for it. Lo, and behold, on his list were a few Robyn Hitchcock shows, including one from that same solo tour that I had seen a show from (and left early, remember?) So I traded him for the Robyn show. The show was incredible. The quality fairly good, and great in-between song banter. By now I was familiar with all his songs, so hearing them in their simplest form instilled me with awe--- if a song sounds great when stripped of its arrangement and production, then it must be a great song. The trade was fun to do--my very first live tape trade, and for such a cool show! I wrote back to him and asked how to get started. He suggested that I take out an article in the collecter's magazine GOLDMINE. And so I did. I took out an ad asking for live material from Robyn. I had no idea that A) tape trading was so widespread and popular, and B) that was so much Robyn Hitchcock and Soft Boys material floating around! I had always been aware of BOOTLEGS (the "B" word), but knew nothing of tape trading. I figured people were only trading POPular stuff like Prince, or The Cure, or The Beatles--stuff that is popular in the Bootleg World. I received many responses to my 1991 ad, and started what has proven to be an enjoyable and successful hobby collecting Robyn shows. When 1992 rolled around and Robyn and The Egyptians did their Perspex Island tour, I was actually able to give something back to "the community" by taping my very first Robyn show, at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR. And then last fall, I taped my very first Robyn solo show (with decent equipment---having progressed from a mono Panasonic hand held recorder to a Stereo Sony Walkman Recorder and finally to a Sony D-6 which is one of the analog standards in the taping world) and I realized while at the show that I had come full circle. I was thinking of all this this past week as I was listening to a compilation of Robyn stuff that I made last year. Many of the shows I have acquired feature songs that never showed up on regular album releases. Robyn plays alot of cover songs as well. Robyn also has this habit of making up songs on the spot. I am a big fan of all this unreleased stuff, but hated having to look up "moments" I enjoyed on all these various tapes. So I compiled them on to a 100min tape. Mind you, the sound quality is not so hot in places. It reflects the diversity of tapers and their recorders. But the idea I had for the tape was to tape each song in its rawest form (an audience recording) yet choose the best recording I had for each song. I titled it "Uncarved Pumpkins", in reference to an interview segment on Modern Rock Live when he talked about driving through the countryside and seeing these big pumpkin patches they set up 'round Halloween time. In commemoration of the resurrection of the FEG list, and of the upcoming Robyn tour, I am willing to make copies of this tape for whoever is interested. It is a good tape because it provides a good overview of what is out there in the trading community in terms of Robyn material, you can here songs and improvs that you maybe haven't heard before. And in a small way, it is my way of paying homage to those fans who tape the shows. We wouldn't have all the great raw live recorded moments of Robyn without their contribution. I'm done now--I've told the story and made my offer. Anyone interested, just send me a blank tape (100min long) and enough money to cover postage ($1.25 should do it). Or we could set up a trade. John B. Jones 225 Fellows Ave. Syracuse, NY 13210-2625 Write me as well if you are interested in trading. I am always looking for good sounding shows. I'm still hunting for tapes of the Sept. 94 McCabe's shows. Someone ALWAYS seems to tape these (McCabe's shows), yet there doesn't seem to be any around. P.S. Can someone get my wife and I tickets to the Amherst, MA gig? Or at least more info? Are they selling advance tickets, or just selling them at the door? Can we really set up chairs early and get in for free? E-mail me if you can help. ____________________________________________________________________________ John B. (IMHO). I'm not trying to be a dick, that's just how I feel. I am sick to death of the whole indie rock sound. Gimme some RH or Soft Boys or Butthole Surfers (older BHSurfers, thank you) and I'll be fine. You are right - Beck isn't weird at all - he's just having fun. I think we're just coming from different spheres of influence, that's all. For example - I *hate* Henry Rollins. Does this mean we can't read each other's posts anymore? clint :) [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sun, 12 Feb 1995 21:42:08 -0500 (EST) From: Eugene B Mirman Subject: Feb 14th and midnight fish... To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu I was in a record store and saw a list of release dates for records, and Robyn's name was right there. It said "I Something You" would be coming out on Feb. 14. So, hopefully it will. Also, last week I started doing a talk show on WMHC,a college radio station, and throughout it, whenever someone would mention anything sexual, I would say, "Slipping the midnight fish." Eventually, people who called in started using the phrase, and yesterday when I was at a dance there, there were some girls, and one of then said to the other, "Do you like the midnight fish." I instantly asked her where she got that phrase, and she said her friend, who listened to my show, kept using it. I was quite amused; my goal was for random people to start using the phrase.
