One difference in my hearing of it: Third line of the verse (Everyone worries so much about themselves) isn't G#m Bm A but rather G#m C#m D A Or at least I think so. Anyway, it's true that this is possibly the most Beatlesque song ever written, by the Beatles or not. But it's a Paul song (except the lyrics are good), not a John song. Personally I think that Robyn inherited John's genius on that dreadful day in December, 1980. Can anyone else think of any songs of RH that sound more like Paul than John besides this one? -j ******** jajasoon tlitteu (jmittell@students.wisc.edu) "Life is a series of flesh cartoons with various characters painlessly rupturing themselves like Tom and Jerry." I especially recommend this one for I Often Dream Of Trains/Eye fans; don't expect Robyn-style lyric extravaganzas, but this is a really great little album. Beck's acoustic material is really cool in general, as evidenced by "Pay No Mind (Snoozer)" from MELLOW GOLD, which features my favorite couplet from last year: "I sleep in slime I just got signed" Also, check Beck out on the DGC Rarities, Vol. 1 CD. His track, "Bogusflow", might just prove Beck to be Dylan's long-lost Nebraskan son. It's truly hilarious. This CD also features a GREAT Posies track, as well as pretty cool stuff from Weezer, Sonic Youth, etc. Oh well, I know this post has low Robyn content, but ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE really does remind me of TRAINS and EYE, and it's way cooler than the stuff on MTV. And it's on K Records, who are obviously cool enough to have Robyn... Dolph [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 10 Feb 1995 17:01:34 -0600 (CST) From: "Dolph Chaney, vox/gtr, PORT RADIUM" Subject: Python connections To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu With Robyn mentioning in the BLACK SNAKE DIAMOND ROLE (where you can find "The Lizard", Eve) re-issue's liner notes how "The Man Who Invented Himself" was inspired by Monty Python's "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life", last night I discovered another Python connection. While listening to QUEEN ELVIS, during "Freeze", the lines "There's a justice in this world And she's cruel but she's fair" finally clicked for me. There's a Python sketch called "The Piranha Brothers", in which the life of a pair of gangster brothers is explored with hilarious results. One of the people interviewed in the mockumentary said of Dinsdale Piranha, "He was a cruel man, but fair." EUREKA!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, I've had QUEEN ELVIS since it came out six years ago, and I've been a Python fan for about that long as well, but I'd never put that one together before. If Robyn intended this in-joke, then he's implying that the "Elaine" in the song is prone to nailing people's heads to the floor, screwing their pelvises to cake stands, and believing that giant hedgehogs named Spiny Norman are after her. Not a very nice thing to say, but a hilarious one. OK, OK, I'm done now... (Ni!) The dictionary says a mandala is a Hindu or Buddhist symbol of the >universe, or a symbolic circular pattern with an image on it. Is that what >he means in the song? back when i was in grade school, i wrote this nifty program that drew what i called a mandala on a computer screen. it's kinda difficult to describe in words, but it was a pattern made by connecting equally spaced dots along a pair of axes in both the positive and negative directions. (i'm sure that was very clear!) anyways, when "tropical flesh mandala" came out, i developed this image of that pattern drawn in the sand, whipped by seaspray, just on the edge of the waves. i looked up "mandala" in the dictionary to get the real definition and found something like that sharon wrote above. never really thought about it beyond that though. now, i'd guess that robyn was using that word to talk about searching for meaning and being eluded. "lying out there on the beach was a pleasant growth in the reach of me and you, in the reach of both" we can all strive for it, but: "when i got the pictures back, none of them came out" we never can quite get it. or maybe he just thought it sounded cool. hmmm. just remembered that i probably still have a copy of the review of _globe of frogs_ i wrote for the school newspaper (clarkson's "integrator" - yeah, we're a geek school - go tech!). i'll have to dig it up, post it and be embarrased. :) woj [][][][][][][][][][] From: swfcooke@warren.med.harvard.edu Date: 10 Feb 94 19:22:12 EST To: "Dolph Chaney, vox/gtr, PORT RADIUM" , fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Subject: Re: Python connections >With Robyn mentioning in the BLACK SNAKE DIAMOND ROLE (where you can >find "The Lizard", Eve) re-issue's liner notes how "The Man Who >Invented Himself" was inspired by Monty Python's "Always Look On The >Bright Side Of Life", last night I discovered another Python connection. >While listening to QUEEN ELVIS, during "Freeze", the lines >"There's a justice in this world > And she's cruel but she's fair" >finally clicked for me. Really. I own _Monty Python's Flying Circus, All The Words_ (both volumes), and I know it's true. Plus, I can see Eric Idle (as Stig O'Tracy) saying the sentence clearly in my (admittedly warped) mind. Not that I'm above questioning or anything, but for once, I know something, so I'm sticking by it. Thanks for the response, though! Certainly Clickot is certainly a nutty piece, going out of bounds of normal robyn 'eccentricity'. soundtracks: almost any acoustic piece would fit well in a good movie. I've always thought egyptian cream '93 would go well with opening credits/montage, and airscape is a dead ringer for end titles with its nifty intro, then fade to black for the credits and acoustic song proper.
