Reply-To: buckley@ucs.indiana.edu (Keith Buckley, Law School, 5-7216) Status: O Dear Fellow Acid Birds, RH in dreams? Urrrrk. Yes, I started seeing RH in dreams after the first time I saw him live. He played here in Bloomington, Indiana on October 18, 1990. My best friend (another lightbulb head) and I had been looking forward to the concert since it had been announced. I was especially anticipating the diversion RH would supply me as my father was dying rather horribly of cancer at the time, and my sisters and I traded around our caretaking duties so I'd be with my father overnight the 17th-18th, attending the concert the next night. My father died early the morning of the 18th, and I called my best friend saying, no, no, no way I can go. My family and my best friend finally convinced me that going to the concert would be very good for my mental health, and approximately 20 hours after I watched my father die, I am sitting at a table in the front row, about eight feet away from Robyn with him looking down at me, singing "Ain't you ever seen a disembodied soul before?" As I was scraping my frontal lobes out of my beer, I wanted to yell if he had any sticky things, but it was pretty apparent Robyn was in a foul mood that night (although he did a version of "Clean Steve" that had me laughing until I nearly threw up). That night, I started seeing Robyn, usually sitting around in a corner of a room playing guitar while I was trying to talk to my father. I'm trying to avoid making this too maudlin. QUEEN ELVIS and THE EYE got me through some wicked times. Are there any other RH addicts out there around my advanced age (39)? How successful have you been in turning on others in our age bracket? I've discovered I can convert guitarists, Dylan and Lennon fans within an evening's forced listen. Just for the record, I am blind as a bat and *can't* wear contacts. I have made love to a loaf of bread, but, errrrrr, that's another story . . . Take care, Keith P.S. My main record store here in the midwest backwaters had all the Rhino re-releases first thing Tuesday morning. I have now determined that I MUST listen to "Happy the Golden Prince" at least twice in the morning before going to work or else my head will explode. Reply-To: Pamela A Lowy Status: O > > Sandra > (of the no doubt long forgotten Sandra & Trudi) > > > > Oh, how embarrassing. Um... well, I'd better begin at the beginning. I became a Robyn Hitchcock fan at age 15. A friend of mine was dating a 25-year-old guy (yeah, I know), and he made her tapes. Needless to say, 'Balloon Man' was on one of them, and all of my friends and I were instantly mesmerised. We stormed into the coolest record store in the area, all seven of us, ages 14 to 16, and tentatively asked the owner if he'd heard of Robyn Hitchcock, and where we could find everything he'd ever done. Please. He asked us how the hell young girls had found out about RH, but being a fan, while perplexed, he helped us get our little hands on everything that was currently available. Robyn became my dream-man, my hero, my favorite singer, my favorite songwriter, the one who sang the way I thought. My best pal Amy and I spent hours doing nothing but watching Monty Python, the Young Ones, Robyn Hitchcock videos, listening to Robyn and the Soft Boys, and we finally decided to write to the famed Sandra and Trudi. First off, we decided that we did not like these women. Number one, they knew Robyn. We did not. (we're talking about 15-year-old girls here, remember) They probably had all of the hard-to-find stuff _we_ wanted. We decided that they were probably gorgeous and got to do anything they wanted to. We were adolescent and goofy-looking and boys hated us and everyone thought we were weird. So we wrote a letter to the address provided. I believe we started off, "Dear Sandra and Trudi, sod off. This is to Robyn." We wrote about 12 pages on little bits of notepaper shaped like lettuce sandwiches, passing the pad back and forth when we ran out of ideas. Our goal was to be funny. Incredibly funny. So funny, in fact, that Robyn would leave Cynthia and come live with us and we could quit high school and go live in the Bahamas with Robyn. We actually sent it. And now Sandra has written onto this mailing list and I am suddenly filled with shame and embarrassment. Six years later, I cannot believe that I once was so... stoopid. But, I did like Robyn Hitchcock, so I suppose I wasn't that stoopid after all. I did the goofy girly fan thing, relating stories about how our parents didn't like our music and how dumb they were. I am going on, aren't I? Well, down to the bit y'all are probably interested in: meeting Robyn. Twice, in fact. The first time was on the Perspex Island tour, as his shows have been traditionally 18-plus. (I'm still bitter about not getting to see the Eye tour because of the difference of six lousy months, or whatever it was) I convinced my pal Mark (a Cocteau Twins fan who owns only GoF) to go with me and sit in the rain for three hours before the doors opened at the Paradise in Boston. We got there before the door people were there. They asked us why the hell we were sitting in the rain. I cheerfully explained that ROBYN HITCHCOCK was performing there tonight, and therefore, we could nt risk having bad seats. They laughed at us. Loudly. After an hour or so, a tour bus pulled up. I started to tremble. Andy got out. I thought, "Oh my God, you're Andy! What should I say? Hi? Hello, Mr. Metcalfe? Too formal. Have a great show tonight, Andy? No, too familiar." And as I was gawking and thinking a million miles a minute I could possibly say to this man, Mark said, "Hi, are you famous?" Andy laughed and skipped into the club. "HI, ARE YOU FAMOUS?" I was mortified. But just then, the lanky frame of Robyn emerged from the bus. Imagine the looks on the faces of Beavis and Butthead when they see something really horrific on TV. That would have been us. Eyes bugged out, mouths open, soaking wet from the torrential rain. He waved and disappeared into the club. Eventually, other people started showing up and lining up behind us. The sound check started and I put my ear against the door. 'Rain' by the Beatles. The door opened a crack. "Hi, are you guys the ones that have been here all day?" "uh... yeah." "Come in here for a sec. Just you two." "But we'll lose our place in line." "Just come in here for a minute." We were escorted inside, told that they were doing something which was strictly against the rules, but since we seemed to be really big fans... "he's just finishing up the sound check. He's over by the bar if you wanna go talk to him. If someone asks you why you're in here though, tell 'em you're their hairdressers or something." I did not want to go. I stood at the back of the club, staring at him as he ate cookies and drank beer. I would not bother him. I would be cool. I would be a cool fan, who didn't bother musicians. Maybe I'd wave. Yeah, wave all cool and not bother him. Who's that walking up to him? Oh, shit, it's Mark! So I ran to catch up to him, just as they were shaking hands. "Hi, I'm Mark." "I'm Robyn." "...pam..." "What?" "i'm... pam." "Robyn." "Hi." All I could think was how huge everything was on him. Huge hand that I shook, huge feet. He was standing one step lower than we were and he was still taller than anyone I'd ever met. I looked at his cookie packet. Grandma's cookies. It suddenly struck me that this was terribly funny. I started giggling like mad. The rest of the encounter is a little fuzzy. I told him that my friend's mother calls him "that awful man with that awful song" because of My Wife and my Dead Wife. He seemed pleased. I said something about how we were supposed to tell people we were hairdressers. He grinned and said "Whose hair are you going to do? Not mine..." "No, Morris'. I'd love to do Morris' hair. It's so..." and I proceeded to make strange gestures over my head, wiggling my finger wildly. He stopped looking at me. Mark said something about our friend Amy, and would he put his name of a piece of paper for her. "You don't have a camera, do you?" "No." "Oh, good." He smiled broadly. He wrote "Robyn Hitchcock piece of paper" on the back of a business card from a shoe store, and then I handed him - I swear to you, this was the only piece of paper I had - my newly purchased Smiths book. He looked through it, made a few comments, something about how starnge it was that Michael Stipe and Morrisseay were friends, and I whipped up my sweater to show him the t-shirt I'd had made of a photograph of MS with M. Well, RH leaped back quite far when he saw me start to lift up my sweater, but when he realised that I was leaving the rest of my clothing on, he came back. "Oh, yes, the two of them together." he signed my book "To y'all from Uncle Bobby". I think that's pretty much what happened. He wandered off to find Cynthia (who performed oral sex on her finger on the side of the stage during the show for R's benefit, which Mark and I were rather scarred by). Someone next to me said something about how he wouldn't play any older songs because he hadn't that tour, but he played My Wife and My Dead Wife a la Morrissey, complete with rolling around and swinging the microphone. Very amusing, and of course, I hope it had something to do with our little chat. Anyway, this has gone on too long already. I'll save the next encounter (my interview) for another entry. Bye bye, and Sandra, if you're reading this, and remember the aforementioned letter, I apologize. -Pam * =) [][][][][][][][][][] From: mad5c@server.cs.virginia.edu Subject: Robyn's DC Brownstone To: Hitchcock Fan-List Date: Thu, 26 Jan 1995 13:06:45 -0500 (EST) Reply-To: mad5c@server.cs.virginia.edu Status: O OK, maybe I don't have my facts straight, but didn't Robyn used to have a brownstone in the Georgetown area of DC? Please forgive me if this has been discussed already, but how many of you saw Robyn on the short-lived Dennis Miller show? I remember being very disappointed when Dennis did not briefly chat with Robyn after they did their song, like he was prone to do with his other musical guests. It was probably a lack of time, but the suspicious side of me guessed it was because Dennis was star of the show and did not want to spar with someone who could keep up with him in a verbal exchange. Dennis made the same mistake with John Lydon from P.I.L., for those of you who missed it. John finished his song, then said, "Why didn't you want to talk to me, Dennis? You wanker!" The look of shock on Miller's face was a classic. He even talked about it the next night, and showed a clip! Robyn, however, was to much of a gentleman to do something like that. He just took the rebuff with silent dignity. But at the end, I couldn't stay mad at Dennis Miller, because whether he let Robyn speak or not, at least he had good enough musical taste to have him on the show at all. Before the meat of this bulletin, a few brief notes: (1) My postman/post office/whatever seems to be losing a lot of stuff. If you send something and don't get a reply, write again in a couple of weeks to make sure I got it. Don't send cash if you can avoid it and only send photocopies of artwork or articles if possible. (2) The new Television Personalities rarities/outtakes compilation 'Yes, Darling, But Is It Art?', due out in a couple of weeks on Fire Records, is something no fan of Robyn's should be without. They'll also be the subject of the next Have You Heard feature. (3) There was a missing 1 in the price for the Bucketfull of Brains 'Love Poisoning' single it should have been œ15, not œ5. I'm told that the flexi version is actually a bootleg, and so worth much less. (4) New bootleg CDs are on the way: a Soft Boys CD with a gig at Leicester University, 21/11/78 (Do The Chisel/Return Of The Sacred Crab/Mystery Train/Blues In The Dark/Sandra/Pigworker/ Skool Dinner Blues/The Rat's Prayer/Give It/Hear My Brane/ Leppo/Have A Heart), plus the tracks from Lady Mitchell Hall that didn't make it onto 1976-81 (Anglepoise Lamp/Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole/Human Music/Give It To The Soft Boys/Hear My Brane/Look Into Your Mirror/A Most peculiar Voice/Muriel's Hoof/Blues In The Dark/The Bells Of Rhymney/Sandra/Skool Dinner Blues/Cold Turkey/Leppo/Have A Heart) if there isn't space, the tracks from Cambridge which duplicate those at Leicester will be omitted; a CD release of an amended version of 'Oscar' (Visions Of Johanna/The Wind Cries Mary/Polly On The Shore/Every Day Is Like Sunday/Take A Chance/Senor/Yer Blues/Dominoes/Calvary Cross/Chinese White/I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine/The Gallant Poacher/Pretty Woman); and a great performance at McCabe's, Santa Monica, 27/4/89 whose tracklisting I'm sure you all know are all on the cards. No, you can't get them from me try record fairs. Most copies of Stand Back Dennis have been confiscated by the BPI and a reissue is not planned, so hang on to any copies you might have. Please note that we might change our minds about which tracks to include, so don't complain if your favourite track's been left off. If you've any CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions about what to include, write at the address above. (5) The K Records single will be out 14/2/95, featuring 'I Something You', 'The Man With The Woman's Shadow' and 'Zipper In My Spine'. As mentioned in PVs, this only leaves two unreleased decent tracks from the Surfer Ghost sessions, so I doubt Surfer Ghost will ever see daylight. The official word from Robyn's publicist is that "it will be released, but with different tracks and a different title". (6) Following Melody Maker's 'complete history of the Bingo Hand Job gigs' that didn't mention Robyn once, I'd like to try to get Robyn mentioned in the UK mainstream press. Write in to music papers with queries. 'Info Freako', Melody Maker, 26th floor, King's Reach Tower, Stamford Street, London SE1 9LS and 'Write Said Fred' NME, 25th Floor, King's Reach Tower etc are the obvious bets (don't ask the NME for a discography as they recently printed one); look over them to see the kind of letters they print ("I heard XXX on the radio", "Could you tell me more about XXX", "Is it true that XXX used to be a member of YYY?". Something reasonably valuable from the PVs vaults to anyone who sends a mention of Robyn or Kimberley in a mainstream publication to me with their name on it. (7) Have you booked your First Choice Holidays holiday yet? (reference which will mean nothing to anyone outside Britain, but there you go.) OK, now the (definitely not a cash in) Robyn Hitchcock Reissue Programme details. All albums will be released on Rhino in the US and on Sequel in the UK, simultaneously. In the US sleeves will be the same (except for Gravy Deco) but with different sleeve notes; here, sleeves will be slightly different, designed by Jon Storey. Dealers are frantically trying to shift the old versions, so you should be able to pick up the Midnight CDs (except for BSDR) for no more than a couple of quid. The first three albums will be released 24/1/95, the second three 28/2/95 and the last two, plus You & Oblivion (a compilation of songs that were too bad to put on Groovy Decay, Globe Of Frogs or Queen Elvis) on 28/3/95. Instead of printing straightforward reviews of the albums every review we print either gets complaints of "too nice" or "too harsh" we're going to steal yet another idea from The Amazing Pudding and print a few pages of comments from as many people as possible. Please send your opinions (anything from one word to 10000 words) of the individual albums or of the reissue programme in general in to us as soon as possible after the album you're writing about is released; while we may have to edit some contributions down, we'll put as many as possible in we do want to reflect everyone's opinion, not just our own. And as always, we need contributions from everyone on anything else. <> All this is confirmed accurate. The first wave should be out now. I would strongly advise you against buying them. But of course reality intrudes ... I would still love to engage him in a good chat over several pints, though. Just my coffee-fueled two cents; what DOES Cynthia look like anyway? She seems like rather a mysterious person, rather like RH himself. They must be very compatible to have stuck together for so long; I know some local musicians here in Toronto and their partners don't have a particularly easy time of it. First off, Dennis didn't even introduce Robyn; instead, this seemingly half drunk man from the audience who Dennis had pulled up onto the stage read off the cue cards, stumbling over Robyn's name. Anyways, when the band lurched into "Oceanside", I thought to myself, COOL. Here's Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians performing on national late night TV! What could be better? Unfortunately, the sound mix was rather poor, and as Sharon said, Dennis and Robyn didn't converse at all. I used to have a copy of this show on video tape; if anyone's terribly interested I can root around for it... daveR. _______________________________________________________________________ | | | "I promised only that you would see some sign of Unicorns, and so | | you have...As for you and your heart and the things you | | said and didn't say, she will remember them all when | | men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits..." | | | | | | -The Last Unicorn | |______________________________________________________________________| *** Another 100% natural S.M.I.L.B.U. production *** [][][][][][][][][][] Date: 26 Jan 95 17:07:17 EST From: Benjamin.M.Brainard@dartmouth.edu (Benjamin M. PS: The below message is NOT some sort of scam - this is a legit appeal from my friend's friend, a private citizen. Please e-mail him if you do not believe me..... ----- Begin Included Message ----- This appeal is from Paul Arenson of the Jamaican Tourist Office in Tokyo and who is coordinating an effort to supply tents to Kobe. Please spread this as far as possible: KOBE EARTHQUAKE - URGENT APPEAL To The Kind Citizens of the "Internet" There are some very real tangible needs in Kobe for shelter. There are tens of thousands of people who cannot fit into the shelters that are used as refuge centers. It is now down to freezing temperatures, and rain is predicted. They are surviving with blankets and cardboard in parks, common outdoor areas, school yards, you name it. I am appealing to those on the net to copy and paste this message, if you feel so inclined, to as many as possible on internet for the following: 1. Would you send tents, inclusive of rope, spikes/stakes & mallet: new, old, doesn't matter, they need shelter. 2. Those of you who work for Delta, American, United, Continental, Northwest, whatever, encourage your employers to accept these tents to be sent to Japan by air, urgently, as a service for common cause. 3. In the case of Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, I am confident that they would accept the shipments from any gateway they fly out of th e U.S. or Canada to Japan (L.A., SFO, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Vancouver, etc.). 4. Those of you who work for tent manufacturers, or have friends / colleagues in outdoor sports stores, to see if they would donate a few tents each. If many provide a few, thousands in Kobe will be helped! 5. Contact the airline in your area and see if they would send the things you so generously and graciously might provide, on to Japan. 6. If you would wish to notify us of what you have sent or what you have arranged, e-mail to jwr@paradigm.co.jp or fax to, by dialing (U.S. citizens, don't know for Canada) 011-813-3591-3845 or 011-813-3395-8229. Details: 1. Send the tents marked KOBE RELIEF, c/o Jamaica Tourist Board, Tokyo Office. We and others will see that the tents are delivered immediately down to Kobe by truck. 2. Shipping address: Jamaica Tourist Board, Chigusa Building 6th Floor, 1-5-9 Nishi Shimbashi, Tokyo 105 Tel: 03-3591-3841, fax: 03-3591-3845. 3. We will mobilize as many people as is possible to go down as a group to Kobe to help in putting the tents up, and getting those without shelter settled in for however many tents that would be sent. 4. We will work with relevant Japanese agencies and ministries to get the necessary clearance and assistance to get in to Kobe to get the tents up. 5. When it is all over, the tents will be placed in the care of the newly established Earthquake Ministry for use in the future, in Japan or Asia, should disasters occur. There are so many of us who want to help and do something - working as a common community will keep traffic congestion in the area down. As for me, I am a U.S. citizen who represents the Jamaica Tourist Board in Japan. My wife is Japanese, and her family in Kobe were affected (alive, but suffering as with the rest of the survivors). I was introduced to his music just a few years ago. I'm now 26 and still addicted. I'd have to go along with Sandra and say he is one of the few performers who totally entrance me. He can keep his Cynthia and STILL make my life worthwhile! And concerning the dream thing, I had a dream just last night that I had found a little doll-sized shirt exactly like the one he was wearing at the Neurotic gig. Trouble was, I'd lost the Robyn figurine that it was supposed go with it . . . hey, now there's a hot marketing idea! Cynthia (Peterson) P.S.
