(stuff deleted) I had one just a couple of nights ago. I was in bed in my dream, and woke up to the sound of a county fair outside right across the street. What awoke me was the sound of Robyn playing the song "Surfer Ghost". I thought, ROBYN, PLAYING AT A COUNTY FAIR???? So I rushed out there in my pajamas and robe and found the tent where the music was coming from. When I got there it wasn't Robyn at all, but a cheezy brunette country singer wearing a black suit with rhinestones all over (she looked like Loretta Lynn) and she was doing an awful version of "Surfer Ghost" with lots of southern drawl to it. I got up to leave, and natch, she turned the spotlight on me and said "We have a very special guest tonight." and as everyone turned around to see who it was (me) I remembered I was in my pjs and robe. Great. I waved the spotlight away and walked home, embarrassed. ____________________________________________________________________________ John B. My name is Sharon and I live in Oregon. Woj is sure doing a wonderful job. Sorry if I'm snubbing anyone else, but I don't know anyone yet. I've spent a lot of time reading the archives, interviews, liner notes, looking at the paintings and photos, etc. It has sure been an enjoyable experience to view all the Robyn-related material I've seen. Thanks so much for making the effort! I had the pleasure of seeing Robyn when he toured with Matthew Sweet a few years ago. He was absolutely charming. Someone threw a baseball cap up to him for a present, and he picked it up, stuck his hand in it like it was a puppet, and did an impromptu ventriloquist act! (I was too far back to see if his lips moved!) : ) And their a capella version of "Uncorrected Personality Traits" brought the house down. I've seen a lot of good tips on availability and location of Robyn material. What I haven't seen yet is people talking about what turned them on to him, and/or why they like him. With me, he appeals on so many different levels: my goofy and silly side, the twisted side, and of course, the side that loves his beautiful melodies and singing voice. My favorite lyric is "And it rained like a slow divorce; and I wish I could ride a horse." I think that was the song I heard which convinced me he could do no wrong! I've been reading a lot of interviews and haven't seen this mentioned yet: does anyone know if Robyn is into horror book and/or movies? Or Sci-Fi? I'm a member of the Horror List (we discuss everything about the horror genre) and some of Robyn's darker lyrics, like "the organism rapes itself; and then gives birth upon the shelf," or "yesterday I saw the devil in my food; I wasn't hungry so I played with it," makes me wonder how extensive his interests in the macabre are. He is so wonderful; he can make you feel like rocking out, relaxing to a haunting melody, laughing, crying, brooding, thinking, or not thinking at all, just being silly. Does he know of the existence of this group? Well, that's my .02 worth. Sorry if this post is too long. I will accept no more than 3 more songs (which, coincidentally, is exactly the number that have been offered since the rebirth of the list). It's tempting to try and get enough songs to fill two 90's, but the chances of filling 60 additional minutes seem rather slim (a 90 and a 60 might not be out of the question, though this is somehow not as aesthetically pleasing. "Zinc Pear" and "The Perfumed Corpse" were working titles for the album that eventually was released as Black Snake Diamond Role. The "Zinc Pear Mix" of "The Man who Invented Himself" is an earlier mix of the song, lacking the saxaphone part which Robyn claims he was pressured into adding. "Brenda's Iron Sledge" is likewise a new track, a grittier mix that Robyn preferred to that on the original release. So these two are different versions of these songs, a bit of revision on Robyn's part, that have replaced the originally issued mixes. Just another reason to spring for the Rhino reissues. But it's true, the male Robyn fans far outweigh the female fans. Another interesting statistic is the large number of Robyn fans with, not just bad eyesight, but the preference for eyeglasses over contacts. Go figure. Hmmm.... I have bad eyesight and I have an innate fear of sticking my finger in my eye, so I wear glasses, not contacts. What are you saying? 8) <---- My smilies always wear glasses. ---Mike ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. I am truly an obsessed Robyn fan and now I feel comforted by the presence of so many of you here--none of my friends really understand his appeal, so I guess this is group therapy for me (or just groupiedom). I remember hearing "Strawberry Mind" and "My Wife and My Dead Wife" back in 85 or so on the belated KQAK in San Francisco. But it wasn't until a year later in college that I got a hold of Fegmania and realized just how cool it was. Amazingly enough, the Egyptians played at my college just after my discovery of their album at our school radio station. I found myself completely mesmerized by Robyn's between-song diatribes. I got hooked. (By the way, They Might be Giants opened for them at that show--they were wearing huge tribal masks!) I kept going to see Robyn after that--after college I came back to SF and have been able to see him here quite a bit (thank god he loves this area). He's one of the few performers who totally entrances me--the rest of the world melts away when Robyn plays a beautiful melody or creates an impromtu story based upon a random heckler. Going to see him 3 nights in a row is amazing because his tales are never the same. One of my favorite Robyn experiences was seeing him play at Neurotic Records in SF last fall. There couldn't have been more than 20 of us in the shop, many of us sitting on the floor watching him play acoustically in front of racks of polyester shirts. I hope he's back soon!
