This latter book, if it's really by Robyn's dad, would represent the weirdest wrap-around coincidence I've seen in ages. "Percy," a movie with the plot described above, was made in the late sixties, and is a classic example of English schoolboy bathroom humor. But the soundtrack (of lovely acoustic songs) was done by the Kinks, and became one of the Great Lost Kinks Albums in the U.S., where it went unreleased. And of course the Kinks influenced Robyn musically, while his dad influenced him lyrically... - David Librik librik@netcom.com "we've got to go back to the way the good lord made us all" [][][][][][][][][][] From: mikester@bix.com Date: Mon, 23 Jan 1995 01:36:33 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: Here are the prawns - plus an extra question To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Reply-To: mikester@bix.com I think that it would probably be best if everyone e-mailed me any tribute-tape answers privatly so as to 1) not clutter up the list, and 2) so that everyone on here who _does_ get the tribute will be suprised. 8) Besides I'd like to have the list of quesitons floating around here for a while and have everyone's input into them. I cannot believe they are reissuing the disco mix of Kingdom Of Love - I've got it on "Other Songs About Churches And Fishes" and it just kills me (since it's so hillarious!). I do not have ANY of the old albums (though I have tons o' boots with the tracks on them so I know the songs well - very strange!) so having them on CD is a plus (you can guess where I am going to be tommorrow morning at 9AM - at my local record store begging for copies of the first reissues plus the new Sugar single with the devastating live version of "the SLim" that forced Bob Mould to remove the song from all future Sugar shows - definitely go out and buy the "Gee Angel" single - best investment you could make outside of RH tommorrow) c) Anyone have any great "I met Robyn stories"? I have a great one but have no time tonight to share it PS: I haven't seen any traffic on the list - is it working right or is it just dead? I sure am glad the list's back! Nice work on the chronology, Bayard. Just to throw a monkey wrench into the machinery, let me posit this: A coupla weeks ago, while flipping through a History of Punk Rock book (the title escapes me, I'll get it later today) I found a couple mentions of Robyn -- very early Soft Boys gigs, and so on. What got my attention, however, was that a gig was mentioned by the band the Symptoms, who featured a young Robyn Hitchcock on guitar. Dunno if this is pre-Maureen and the Meatpackers/Dennis and the Experts, but hey, does anybody know anything about this band? The book went so far as to list the date, time, and venue of the show. There was even a copy of the flier, too, if I'm not mistaken. I'll get the details on the book and post them later. I have in my hands the reissued Black Snake Diamond Role and Gravy Deco -- I dunno if they're in stores yet, I've got the promo copies for my college radio station. Rhino has done an exceptional job on these, people. Run out and buy them now. I find the sound on BSDR is a little less muddy than the first CD issue of it, and I'm hearing background vocals and other such details I never heard before (like, f'rinstance, the "ocean" in the beginning of "Love" now sounds obviously synthesized, whereas in copies I've heard before it sounded like a tape of the ocean. Yeah, I know, a goofy distinction to be made, but I appreciate that kind of fidelity). By far, my favorite thing about it is the pristine "Happy the Golden Prince" which makes me, as a Robyn fanatic, very, very, very happy, b/c for years I wouldn't even dare dream of having that cut on CD. The second version of "I Watch the Cars" is real nice, too. The version of "The Man Who Invented Himself" is different in that the harmonies (?) are played with a piano instead of a guitar (forgive the loose terminology, I'm not a musician), which is a nice touch. Good liner notes, too (though I have to agree with _Forced Exposure_ magazine -- when they reviewed the double Soft Boys CD, they said someone who actually knew the history of the band, like Nigel Cross, should have written the liner notes, instead of someone at the label. Oh well). But sheesh, you can't beat these CDs with a fish. Oh yeah, all the above applies to Gravy Deco, too. Somebody else got the I Often Dream of Trains Reissue, and personally I don't see how they could improved the sound on that one, but I'm sure it's great nonetheless. =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + gene@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu Writer/Layout/WWW Guy + Tulane Computing Services http://yodelling-hoover.tcs.tulane.edu/GeneHome.html =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ "Money feeds my music machine" -- The Lemon Pipers [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 10:49:43 -0500 (EST) From: Vashty Hawkins Subject: Happy happy joy joy To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Reply-To: Vashty Hawkins Wooohoooo .... A while ago (a week or two?) I got the re-issue flyer/info from rhino and I've known for a while what day the re-releases were due out from checking with some music companies on the net. So I was spending all weekend thinking about how wonderful it would be to have three more robyn hitchcock CDs. I, too, went to my favorite CD store in town and found that they did not have the re-releases. Actualy the guy I asked to help me said that somewhere in their store the computer said they had two copies of one of them, but he couldn't find them. So I trudged through the rain (it isn't supposed to rain in Southern California but it's raining cats and dogs) and went to just check the stores at the mall. I ended up buying some socks, two books about insects, and some circus animal cookies, but still no robyn hitchcock CDs which I had been so anxiously awaiting. So I just got done ordering them from noteworthy which apparently has them in stock. so at least my story ends on a happy note. :) Let's see if they actually show up here eventually. -Rachel Olivia Hunter [][][][][][][][][][] From: mikester@bix.com Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 20:56:20 -0500 (EST) Subject: Tribute Tape questions - Friendly reminder #1 To: fegmaniax@ns2.rutgers.edu Reply-To: mikester@bix.com Just a friendly reminder to think up those questions for the tribute tape enclosure. This is _your_ chance to ask up-n-coming bands your favorite Robyn-related questions, AND it enables you to say, "I asked this band when..." And contribuers, be sure to get me your band/artist profiles, snail and e- mailing addresses and your tape/diskographies. I'd like to have everything set to begin writing at least the profiles on Sunday, since it's the superbowl, my band's not practicing because of it, and I'm probably the only male in America who's _not_ watching it. For handy refrence, here's the questions so far: 1) How has Robyn Hitchcock influenced your own band/songwriting/general musical style? 2) Why did you pick the songs you picked? 3) Why did you interpret them the way you did? 4) How did you first hear of Robyn? 5) Which is your favorite species of fish and why? Ideally I'd like 8 questions, but I'll take as many as you guys can dish out. And tributeers, once the list of questions is done, I'll be e-mailing them out. James, I have your answers on my hard drive, so I'll send you the new questions when they're compiled. ---Mike ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. It looks like _Black Snake_ differs from the original CD with different versions of the first two tracks - I wonder why they did that? Other news has Robyn negotiating with Rhino for a contract. Let's hope! If they don't grab him, Ryko may be interested. I heard the K records release will also be available on CD single. Can anyone confirm or deny this? My mouth is watering at some of those bonus tracks - I mean, "Dr. Sticky"!! I really would LOVE to find those wonderful b-sides like "Surgury" and whatnot on CD.
