Jones) Subject: You & Oblivion Reply-To: jojones@mailbox.syr.edu (John B. Jones) Here is some more info on the compilation, culled from the recent bulletin of Positive Vibrations that I received yesterday: "All albums will be released on Rhino in the US and on Sequel in the UK, simultaneously. In the US sleeves will be the same (except for Gravy Deco) but with different sleeve notes; in the UK, sleeves will be slightly different, designed by Jon Storey. Dealers are frantically trying to shift the old versions, so you should be able to pick up the Midnight CDs (except for BSDR) for no more than a couple of quid. The first three albums will be released 24/1/95, the second three 28/2/95 and the last two, plus YOU & OBLIVION (a compilation of songs that were too bad to put on GROOVY DECAY, GLOBE OF FROGS, or QUEEN ELVIS ) on 28/3/95." This is interesting, I hadn't suspected that any songs from Globe or Queen sessions would be used, but it makes sense: The songs usually exist years before they are put on album. Didn't the time frame covered by You & O...say 1981-1987? This means we could see songs like Evil Guy (one of my favorites), Surgery, September Cones, etc. The songs that Robyn DEFIED us to have in our collections or have even HEARD of could be from that 1981 period. This is all speculation, but hell, its all I've got, dammit! P.S. The friend of Robyn's that mentioned to me that Robyn was in Europe touring was none other than Liz, owner of Neurotic Records, and former roommate of Robyn's (and Andy's!). I trust the source. She was very nice when I met her. ____________________________________________________________________________ John B. Good stuff. The lyric files are really sketchy though. I'm sure that I at one time had lyrics to many more albums (especially the pre-GOF albums), and I'm pretty sure I got them from this list. That would be many years ago. I don't have it online anymore, though there is a chance it's on tape. Folks, how about checking your private archives? If someone has more lyrics, how about sending them Mike's way. When I saw him at the 9:30 in 91, he made an anti-carnivore remark stating his views on the matter, and interlaced a song (watch your intelligence, i think) with a story about a man in a tank of air with some lobsters milling about outside saying "ooh, I'll have -that- one." I assume he gave up red meat even earlier-- one of the interviews on the ftp site has an interesting interview with Robyn and Maisie, that's the one I took that tidbit from. Apparently Robyn saw a dead chicken at an early age and it traumatised him; conversely, Maisie got pecked by one at a young age and now eats chicken whenever she can get it! (by way of revenge, I suppose) What I'd like to know is, does he in fact consume fish, in addition to being intrigued by them? As far as I know, fish don't dream and their nervous systems are pretty basic, so killing one is perhaps not as cruel as slaughtering a mammal or bird. Well, I'm off to have my dinner-- we're having chicken curry tonight. ;) bayard ps. please do look into having robyn visit irc, andy-- speaking of irc, what about a listening party? I wish there were a new release, but we could do a reissue or perhaps _Trains_. Bout time irc got used for something worthwhile ;). Also, Mike has put forth the idea of interviewing/polling the contributing artists about their robyn influence, thoughts, experiences. So if there is anything you'd like to know, let me know! (whether you're contributing or not.) Mark and his girl have generously offered to help with the j-card, which will look quite nice and provide something to read while listening to the robyn-interpretations. Not all the band info will fit into the 2 j-cards if there's quite a lot of it, but the document with the history of the project and the interviews will be available via email, ftp and maybe web, as well as in hard copy. More Than This (Roxy Music) The Ghost in You (Psych Furs) Birdshead (from Pave the Earth) Fairplay (Van Morrison) Linden Arden Stole the Highlights (Van Morrison) i got it at this little CD shop (same place where i found Stand Back, Dennis, actually) near 6th avenue and west 4th street (near the subway station there, for those of you familiar with manhattan.) but i forget the name of it..... when i get the amex bill i will have the name of the place... as you may realize, these songs are all from odd flexis, weird test pressings, and the b-sides to the majority of the singles.... the sound quality varies (The Ruling Class sounds like it could be thrown right into Perspex or Queen Elvis (where it IS actually from) and Postman's Knock sounds like it was mastered from the original tapes of Portland Arms. some of these tracks will be restored to the CDs that they came from by rhino, others will never get a proper CD release, especially stuff that it is nice to have on CD, like Surgery. and i can only assume that A & M has no plans to rerelease any of the b-sides of anything on CD, especially if it appeared originally only on vinyl and/or promo pressings. it seems sad that so much good material was obscured or buried on vinyl, given for free to DJs and radio stations who would never even play the A sides, much less the great weird stuff robyn is so amazing at. there, i finally got to share.. . oh, in case you were wondering, the CD has a pressing date of 1994, has a poem from Bucketfull of Brains #2, a picture on the inside of the booklet, and a picture of robyn on the CD. the record company is SPQR records, IM Moore 8, 3000 Hanover 1, Germany. the catalogue # is SPQR01CD.... wonder how they expect to recover production costs. I'd like to get a list of questions that everyone contributing could answer within the next week or so. My time is about to become more limited than it already is (I work for an accounting firm, and with tax season starting, by February, my work will begin to get stupidly buisy), so if it's possible to get moving on that end ASAP, it'll be greatly appreciated. Here's some (rather obvious) questions I've come up with: 1) How has Robyn Hitchcock influenced your own band/songwriting/general musical style? 2) Why did you pick the songs you picked? 3) Why did you interprate them the way you did? 4) Which is your favorite species of fish and why? Basicaly, if you could each present these questions to your bands (or yourselves if you're a solo act) and e-mail me back the questions and answers in a "magazine-like" interview format, that would work best on my end. The other thing I'd like is any band info you have (bios, etc). I already sent mine to Bayard, but since he's buisy getting the thing ready (and doing his _own_ contribution) I'll take care of that too. My scanner's not too hot, though, so send the pics to Bayard. The idea I had was to do band profiles, and then song-by-song interviews. ---Mike ----------------------- "People ask me why I'm obsessed with fish, but it's not true. Here's some (rather >obvious) questions I've come up with: >1) How has Robyn Hitchcock influenced your own band/songwriting/general >musical style? The eccentricity of the lyrics freed up my writing, and the 60s influenced pop style that I thought no-one did during the 80s added the janglyness where it was needed. >2) Why did you pick the songs you picked? Ride has been a favourite since I first heard it. And it suits my vocal style (I think). With Serpent, it was the lyrics. Without evil, how do we know good? All part of the plan. Two great songs. She Doesn't Exist, I Often Dream Of Trains or Queen Of Eyes would have been next choice. >3) Why did you interpret them the way you did? Ride already sounded Beatlesque. I can just imagine (pun intended) McCartney singing the "Love me"s with Lennon adding the "But they used to be trees". And the "million creatures yet unborn" bit is pure Lennon. Hence the Beatlesque ending. Serpent deserved to be quiet & semi-acoustic. But it also needed some strange sounds or ther in the background. Hence the heavy slightly offkey echo, and the "whirlything", whistling away. An extra verse "sacrilege" written by myself occurred to me during the recording and was added in between the usual 2nd and 3rd verses. NEW QUESTION! 3a) How did you first hear of Robyn? Way back when (1983?), when I was forming my first band, I was heavily into (and still am) the work of English eccentrics - from Brian Eno to XTC to Billy Bragg. I was also heavily into the Byrds and the jangly twelve string sound. "Wouldn't it be great if someone combined the two?" I said. Derek Bell (then our bassist, now Melbourne radio person) smiled and played me "Queen of Eyes". Thanks Derek! >4) Which is your favorite species of fish and why? On the wall of the local museum are some species caught in Otago waters. An amazing oarfish, and a sunfish so wuggling huge that it fair croggles my gerbils. Mudskippers are cool too.
