The chronology said that songs later to be included on _IH_ were recorded in 1982. According to the liner notes of the CD, "these songs have arrived on the same record together because: a) they didn't fit it with what I was doing at the time and b) they do fit in with each other now." The 18 songs were recorded at various places with various people in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986. It was released by Glass Fish Records in 1986; some of the older songs were overdubbed and mixed in 1986 for the release. Be sure to stress the fact that there is no money changing hands (thus, we will not be able to give him royalties) and that we (mostly I) are assuming all costs ourselves. I hope he likes the idea. There was one type of t-shirt. Kind of disappointing.. black with a white cartoon drawn on it... no tapes.. :( I was gonna buy 'em too. Apparently the only reason for the tour is that Robyn was going to a wedding in San Franscico and decided he'd have the trip pay for himself. Looks like I'm kinda reviewing the show here! Wow... New songs.. DeCerico Street: This songs about inanimate objects. Starts out with 'A was follwed home by a weighing machine on DeCerico street... etc etc etc.' Pretty cool. Each Of Her Silver Wands: According to his expanations it's about a man in drag walking dwn an abandoned railway line... It's slower.. I Something You: Pretty cool - Lyrics have been posted (nt by me, so don't ask me to send you them) A Happy Bird Is A Filthy Bird: I got sick of hearing this one. I Am Not Me: Pretty col song. It'll be rad with the egyptians backing him up. Fave line... 'I say Caroline, no need to say it backwards: That's Enilorac.' Won't You Take A Chance On Me: Only played once at the first show - I have since forgotten it. She Worships The Sun: My fave of the new songs. Only played it once. Since it was my fave it'll prolly be a b-side (like Alright Yeah) Beautiful Queen: Some guy there had said he'd heard this one before. Okay.. once again slower. Man With A Woman's Shadow: Played this during the Respect tour.. so it's not new too me - I'll probably type up lyrics to this.. Well, at the Great American Music Hall show tonight in San Francisco, there was a GAMH employee selling $15 T-shirts. No tapes. The shirt is black with a white line-drawing (like the "One Long Pair Of Eyes" shirt), depicting a tuxedoed figure with a cat's head, speaking to a woman with a clock face while holding a large cat's head balloon. On top it reads: IN MY POCKET NIGHTMARES DRESS, I SAID -- and the cat creature is saying JASPER, THIS ONE'S EVIL! There are a few floating disconnected heads and men climbing ladders. The words are from one of Hitchcock's new songs -- not the same one as the woman with the cat's head, though. If the new album succeeds in capturing the bizarreness of the songs I heard tonight, it's going to be really amazing. "I Something You" is a pop love song deliberately designed to upset all your expectations of song structure and content. (Weird content, of course, we have come to expect, but here Robyn comments in the song on the song structure, and does weird things with the middle eight. I don't know if it will seem as hilarious the eightieth time I hear it, but I really liked it tonight.) - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu p.s. I already own it, but I figured that it was a rare enough commodity that it would be good to trade. It has an extended remix of Nightride, reasonably similar to the original version but you can hear the background "Irene, the coast is clear" much better. It has the version of Midnight Fish that's on Groovy Decoy. As the coup de grace, though, it includes a drastic reworking of Kingdom of Love (one of my favorite Soft Boys songs). Here are some possible trades: Nightride 12" + $10.00 for Spectre Nightride 12" for Flesh Number One 12" Nightride 12" for $15 I would prefer not to exercise this last option and would be happier with a trade. Opening was Carmaig DeForest. He was kinda weird, but fit the bill nicely. Interspersed his songs (solo, on ukelele (sp?)) with poems. Clearly this guy's act is an acquired taste, and as much as I disliked it at first, I really liked it by the end. Imagine someone with Lou Reed's phrasing and the voice of the lead-singer of the Violent Femmes doing Robyn-like songs solo on the ukelele. He's got a cassette and a cd, although I can't imagine they'd be all that easy to find. Apparently the scheduled opener, Paul K., cancelled. As to Robyn... black pants and the usual kind of print shirt he's partial to. He looked fine, hair a little longer than the last time I'd seen him. He's gone back to the loopy-Englishman persona, which is interesting the first couple of times you see it, but I'm starting to find it less amusing and more irritating. The setlist, with comments.... First part of the show was acoustic: 1) Queen of Eyes Really nice. Lovely song, solo acoustic. 2) deChirico Street One of the new ones. Will probably benefit from a fuller treatment. Very surreal. Even for Robyn. If I had to bet, I'd guess that the title refers to paintings done by the famous surrealist painter Giorgio deChirico. If that draws a blank - think of a softer, less nitemarish Dali, with empty bleak landscapes filled with half-naked women and shadows and classical buildings and funny perspectives and an overall dreamy feel. 3) Balloon Man I thought he had bid this one good riddance. Still, it was alright. 4) Madonna of the Wasps Again, lovely. 5) Devil's Coachman He must really like this one since it seems he plays it every time I see him. 6) Each of her Wands 7) One Long Pair of Eyes As great as that B-side from McCabes. 8) I Something You 9) Queen Elvis Again, lovely. I'd swear he said "..sculpt you til you bleed". Isn't it usually "...til you breathe". Or? 10) Beautiful Girl 11) She Worships the Sun This is one of those songs that's pretty much perfect as it is, solo - all arpeggios. Very pretty. 12) The Yip Song This was a surprise, both as a choice and that it worked so well solo acoustic. And then he changed shirts (yet a different print), and strapped on the electric guitar for a Bragg-style set: 1) ? Haven't the faintest idea what this one was. 2) I Often Dream of Trains 3) Autumn is Your Last Chance 4) Listening to the Higsons All of the above three I liked alot. Higsons works well in this arrangement. 5) "Beautiful Queen" 6) Only the Stones Remain Again, solo electric works really well for OTSR. All in all, I thought it was an excellent show. Only drawback, perhaps, is that at times his voice sounded a little tired or strained. I had the pleasure of accompanying two other list members, David Librik and Isaiah Singer, to the show. Also, if it means anything to anyone, John Wesley Harding was in the audience. Hitchcock played at Neurotic Records in San Francisco, Saturday 24 September, with just his acoustic guitar, an audience of about fifteen people, and a sketchy set list. Mostly he just took requests -- that's not to say he played them. The most interesting point was his misinterpretation of a request for "Linctus House" as "Meat Home." He promptly launched into an apparently extemporaneous and incredibly bizarre song, which went "Oh, darling, is the meat home? Yes, honey, I think it is. Oh, darling, is the meat home? Yes, I think it's in the fridge." until everyone collapsed with hysteria. (This song also contained the line "Is that some Ben and Jerry's you've got on you, or are you just glad to see me?") Anyway, the set list (such as it was), ran: 'Wide Open Star' (don't know the real title - apparently a cover) Fifty-Two Stations Queen Elvis Cynthia Mask 'Something In You That Just Isn't In Anyone Else' (a new song) DeCirico Street Meat Home 'Where We Were Born In Time' ("a pretty recent Dylan song") My Favourite Buildings (done as a horrible Las Vegas lounge lizard song) She Worships The Sun (titles are approximate) Afterwards I asked him about "The Professor," the story he wrote with James Fletcher, an excerpt of which appears on the back of the _Eaten By Her Own Dinner_ EP. He explained that he and Fletcher had written several episodes of this thing, stopping when Fletcher "seized up - like a mule." He said he would try to get the story back from the reclusive Fletcher for inclusion on a forthcoming spoken-word album. Also the Rhino re-issues are running into problems as a number of the masters have gone missing. (He mentioned the version of "Grooving On An Inner Plane" on _Invisible Hitchcock_, and the artwork for _Black Snake Diamond Role_.) Well, ya'll get the idea. I just hope that Robyn is able to locate them. Hmm...it would be most excellent if he released a spoken word version of "the Professor". Speaking of that story, I was in a used record store yester- day, and I was looking at the viny version of one of his albums, I think it was "Element of Light". Anyways, you know how in the center of a record, after the music grooves stop, there's a blank vinyl circle around the lable? Inscribed in this circle was a quote from "the Professor". It was intriguing. Also...to whoever was offering the "Nightride to Trinidad" disc- I would love to buy that from you for $15, if you're still interested.
