To wit: Black Snake, Diamond Role Groovy DecAy I Often Dream of Trains Fegmania!!! Gotta Let This Hen Out!!! Element of Light Invisible Hitchcock Of course, it could be that they're going to do both DecAy and DecOy, but is there a need for that? Couldn't you fit the original DecAy tracks and the Seligman demos on DecOy onto a single CD? And even if they're doing both of 'em, that's only eight. Could it be they've gotten the rights to Eye or some A&M stuff as well? But the latter albums all seem to be in print, as I can go to our local Tower and pick any of 'em up... And will each CD be packed to the gills with bonus tracks? While the existing CDs of IODOT and EOL in particular have a nice selection of cuts from various EPs and so forth, none of them approach the 75-80 minute upper limit for CD length, so there's plenty of room for more stuff to be added on. If there isn't more stuff, will the Rhino CDs be remastered? In truth, I was pretty satisfied with the existing CDs and if there aren't more bonus tracks or superior sound on the new ones, will there be any incentive for us Robyn grognards to buy them? Finally, wonder if Rhino also plans a best-of anthology from these albums? Seeing as they've done similar things with other worthwhile artists (Todd Rundgren, Sparks, NRBQ), one cannot but hope for something as good and with as many unreleased or rare goodies as Ryko's 2-CD Soft Boys collection... Twintone deleted EYE > some time ago; the new copies you still see floating around are generally > cut-outs. While I didn't mention Twin/Tone by name when I made my original query about the number and composition of the reissues, I thought I clearly implied that it wasn't an A&M release by speculating that it may be part of the reissue package, THEN asking if the A&M stuff might be part of it too. Sorry for any unintentional confusion. I did not know it had been deleted, however. There must be a good number of _Eye_ CDs floating around; I've travelled to Detroit/Ann Arbor and the Pacific Northwest since March and seen copies of _Eye_ in practically every store. Well... maybe this means we'll see "Kung Fu Fighting" on the new _Eye_ CD, perhaps! Hopefully there'll be a story on the reissues with all the juicy details (bonus trax info especially!!!) in this month's _International CD Exchange_ (ICE for short), which will probably be out within the next fortnight. I can add a little to this. The working title is "Phweeen". This is from the newsletter #2 from Mrs. Wafflehead, which I found in my mailbox a couple of days ago. There was a lot of other tidbits of information, much of which has shown up here already, but some may not have, so: The second souvenir tape is out (or will be shortly). Called "Where are the Prawns". From the SB reunion gigs in the UK last year. US $12.50 for the tape (includes postage). Send your check made out to Robyn Hitchcock, and the address is Mrs. Wafflehead, PO Box 2042, Madison Square Station, New York, New York 10159. Don't know how the UK'ers would order it, presumably equivalent funds to the London address. Allow 6-8 weeks for delivery of the tape. Also mentions work on the spoken word stories: "The Devil You Know" (which is on QE), and "The Glass Hotel" (which is on Eye). Robyn narrates, Andy does the accompaniment. There will also be two other (unnamed stories). Those of you whiners on the East Coast can shut up now. He'll be there "...in the new year". No dates yet known. New album still in progress. New songs are "Statue With A Walkman", "De Chirico Street", "A Happy Bird is a Filthy Bird", "Each of Her Silver Wands", "I Something You", and "Man With A Woman's Shadow". Any additions/corrections would be appreciated; a few unanswered questions are at the end of this file. Comments on this and the songlist should be directed to me here @rasputin.umd.edu, rather than the old gwu address. Standard disclaimers apply, of course. Thanks. THE RISE OF ROBYN March 3, 1953. Robyn is born is West London, where he subsequently attends an all-male boarding school. 1965. When his attempts to build a time machine are met with failure, twelve-year-old Robyn becomes disillusioned. Early 70's. Robyn attends, and drops out of, art school. He takes up the guitar and begins writing songs. "Wey Wey Hep a Hole," "Give Me a Spanner, Ralph," and "It's Not Just the Size of a Walnut" are from this vintage. Late 1974. Robyn arrives in Cambridge with the intention of putting together a band. 1975-76. He plays every weekend at the Portland Arms Folk Club, where he meets bluegrass guitarist Andy Metcalfe, and is introduced to Morris Windsor by James "The Great One" Smith. Rob Lamb temporarily (he thinks) loans Robyn his band, "Dennis and the Experts". Late 1976. Punk rock is born. Lamb leaves the scene, "Wang Bo" Trotter (Alan Davies) joins as the lead guitarist, and Robyn christens the band "The Soft Boys" onstage in an impromptu fashion, after just writing "Give it to the Soft Boys" that same day. The Soft Boys soon become one of the most popular bands in Cambridge. March, 1977. Demo tape recorded in Robyn's living room. Later that year, the "Give it to the Soft Boys" EP is released on Raw records. Kimberly Rew replaces Wang Bo on guitar, making the band's sound significantly louder and harder. Radar Records signs The Soft Boys and they go into the studio for the "Legendary Radar Sessions," but the only release is "I Want to be an Anglepoise Lamp." Several tracks show up later on _Invisible Hits_. For the next two years or so, the band continues to play to enthusiastic audiences, with notable shows at the Portland Arms (acoustic) and Lady Mitchell Hall (electric). Aug-Nov, 1978. _A Can of Bees_ sessions take place in Spaceward studios, the basement of 19 Clarendon Street, Cambridge. Additional personnel include Jim Melton on percussion, vocals and harmonica, and Gerry Hale on Violin. These sessions engineered by Mike Kemp. April, 1979. After further studio sessions (released on _Invisible Hits_ in 1983) Andy decides to leave the band. Matthew Seligman replaces him on bass, and the band's sound changes once again, leaning slightly towards the pop side of the spectrum. Mid 1980. The classic _Underwater Moonlight_ is recorded for < 600 quid, released on Armageddon, and it's off to America for a series of shows in New York. 1981. The Soft Boys record their final tracks, "Only the Stones Remain" and "The Bells of Rhymney" and these are combined with tracks from the 1977 Portland Arms show to make _Two Halves for the Price of One_, also on Armageddon. Robyn cites Andy's absence as a key reason for the breakup; "After he left, it was more just a band playing my songs." With Matthew's assistance, Robyn begins work on his solo LPs, _Black Snake Diamond Role_ released in 1981, and _Groovy Decay_, released the next year. 1982. Neither of Robyn's records are met with the recognition they deserve, and he takes a two-year sabbatical from music, retreating into his visual art and occasionally emerging to write lyrics for longtime friend Captain Sensible. During this time he lives mostly in Sussex and secretly records songs later to be released on _Invisible Hitchcock_. 1983. _Invisible Hits_ is released, with a mail-in offer for _Live at the Portland Arms_. 1984. Robyn enters the studio alone and records _I Often Dream of Trains_, widely regarded as one of his greatest achievments, on a Fostex 4-track recorder in two days'(?) time. The Soft Boys' first EP is re- released in England as _Wading Through a Ventilator_; Robyn: "I heard that and it just suddenly seemed to me that we had been extremely good, but somehow we'd got lost along the way... it made me think that getting back together with Andy and Morris might be a good idea...one day's rehearsal and, bang! it was really fresh all over again." Thus was born Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians. 1985. _Fegmania!_ is released. The Egyptians tour Europe and the U.S. with keyboardist Roger Jackson. A concert from this tour (at the Marquee) is offered as _Gotta Let This Hen Out!_. _Groovy Decay_ is remixed, re-arranged and re-issued with a different cover as _Groovy Decoy_. 1986. _Element of Light_, another common favorite, is released. Most of the back catalog is pressed on CD and cassette. 1988. The band signs with megalithic record label A&M and produces _Globe of Frogs_. "Balloon Man" proves to be a very popular radio song. The media notes the breakout and predicts success. 1989. _Queen Elvis_ is released on A&M. "Madonna of the Wasps" gets some radio exposure. 1989-1990. Robyn takes a break from his bandmates, A&M, and production values, and _Eye_ is released on Twin Tone, with a solo tour. The simplicity and elegance of _Eye_ earn it a devoted following. Early on in this period, Robyn is in a very bad mental state, but comes out of it quite nicely due to getting _Eye_ out of his system and meeting Cynthia, to whom the next record was dedicated and to whom he is still devoted. In fall of 1990, the fegmaniax listserver is set up, but soon blows up in a freak disk drive accident. 1991-92. Robyn travels to A&M studios in Los Angeles, where he reunites with all of the above and more to make _Perspex Island_, his most commercially successful album to date. The tour is also quite successful, with an acoustic set concluding the shows. The media notes the breakout and predicts success again. Two or three songs get significant radio play. The fegmaniax internet list finds its current home and proceeds quite happily. 1993. The band takes a quieter, more acoustic turn, in keeping with the _Perspex_ tour's closing sets. The _Respect_ album and tour are met with somewhat limited success. Robyn and the Egyptians are released from their A&M contract. Mrs. Wafflehead takes over the Fegmaniax fan club duties from Sandra and Trudi, offering a special souvenir live _Give it to the Thoth Boys_ tape from a reunion gig in England. Also offered for sale are t-shirts and some of the scarce independent-label cd's. Mrs. Wafflehead has headquarters in both the U.S. and Britain. 1994. Robyn tours Canada and Europe with the reunited Soft Boys, the Egyptians, and solo, in support of the tentatively titled _Surfer Ghost_. Fans everywhere wait eagerly for news of this ephemeral release. The Soft Boys lineup varies from show to show, but is always met with ecstatic support. In the latter half of the year, Robyn tours the West coast and works his way eastward for a number of solo acoustic/electric shows. Ms. Wafflehead offers a second live souvenir Soft Boys tape from England, _Where are the Prawns?_. All of the non-A&M albums are slated for re-release at last, as well as a collection of rare tracks and odds and ends entitled "PHWEEN!", and a spoken-word album including the stories from the _Queen Elvis_, _Eye_, and _Respect_ CD booklets. These albums are to be released over the course of late 94-early 95. Robyn plans to tour the American east coast in the early part of 1995. Muses: When did _Invisible Hitchcock_ come out originally? August 1985, I've just graduated, and I go over to New York to visit Trudi Miller (to whom I was at the time engaged). My first day in the new world, we go into Manhatten. In a funny little record shop upstairs on 8th St I find a copy of Underwater Moonlight. Sandy, Trudi and I go home. We go down into Trudi's den, and sit on the waterbed. I put the album on. After 5 seconds of "I wanna destroy you" Sandy and Trudi look at each other and scream. Such is history in the making. I was there. I remember. >How much is a"Quid" in US $? It's a pound. Hence it's about $1.70-ish? >What's Robyn's mother's first name? >Is her second name really Joyce? Yes, it really is Joyce. Trudi's 21st birthday present was a copy of Robyn's birth certificate, which gave the full name of both his parents. >When was Robyn living in Cambridge, London, Sussex, The Isle of Wight, DC, >etc? > I can give a bit more on Sussex. Robyn stayed with Simon Kunath, who at the time lived in Alfriston. I know that Simon sometimes lurks on this list, but I'm on my honour not to broadcast his address too widely :-) >As always, thanks in advance. bayard@rasputin.umd.edu Andy Holyer, Managing Director, Pavilion Internet plc, Brighton, England [][][][][][][][][][] From: mad5c@topaz.cs.virginia.edu Subject: Wang Bo? The Soft Boys record their final tracks, "Only the Stones Remain" and "The Bells of Rhymney" and these are combined with tracks from the 1977 Portland Arms show to make _Two Halves for the Price of One_, also on Armageddon. Robyn cites Andy's absence as a key reason for the breakup; "After he left, it was more just a band playing my songs." With Matthew's assistance, Robyn begins work on his solo LPs, _Black Snake Diamond Role_ released in 1981, and _Groovy Decay_, released the next year. ----- End Included Message ----- Weren't the live tracks from "Two Halves..." (the 'Lope At The Hive' side) recorded at the Hope & Anchor ? I think other tracks from this show popped up on the 76-81 set. There were three other studio tracks on the 'Only The Stones Remain' side (There's Nobody Like You, Innocent Boy, and Where Are The Prawns ?,if I remember rightly). I don't recall the date for the Hope & Anchor show (at least, the one that got released); I'll see if it's noted anywhere. This is all getting a bit scholarly, Bayard ! Has anyone ever been to the Portland Arms ? Does it still exist ? Jonathan. Does it still exist ? Well, I used to live in Cambridge and spent quite a few evenings at the Portland Arms. Although I never saw the Soft Boys play there, I'm quite sure I was there one night while they were playing in the smaller room, or that may be some kind of wishful Greene King Abbot Ale/Bury St. Edmunds (locally referred to as "brain damage")-induced hallucination. Anyway the Portland was (is) a rather large pub with the main lounge--lots of tables and booths and a carpeted floor--to the left, and the smaller bar (where the bands play) on the right. I can't be sure, living in Massachusetts now, but as far as I know it's still there. I did see the Soft Boys play at the Alex Wood Hall (not to be confused with the much larger Lady Mitchell Hall) in 1977 or 1978, and one of my prized possessions is the set list written in Robyn's wonderful script, and an autograph, from that show. Can someone tell me about the Canadian release of Underwater Moonlight on Attic? Did Attic ever repress the album, or is the only edition from 1980? Is the only difference between it and the Armaggedon release the inclusion of Vegetable Man? Cheers, Stefan [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
