I saw that the newsgroup archive wasn't built yet. I don't know who is doing the project, but I suggest you look at the hypermail 1.2 documentation on the web. Its way cool and easy to use, especailly with the volume of mail we generate. Its at http://www.eit.com/software/hypermail/hypermial.html. jay [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 1 Sep 1994 14:08:58 +1200 To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: Re: another Robyn concert... >>we have much better.......uh.......cranberries than the west coast! >> >>if that's not incentive, i don't know what is. > >We also have better lobster. 8) And cod. 8) And you know how Robyn >loves sea creatures. You think you guys have troubles... Hi, I'm a Robyn Hitchcock fan from New Zealand, just writing in to introduce myself as a new subscriber to the list. I've been listening to Robyn since introduced by a University friend to "Underwater Moonlight" about six or seven years ago, and am thoroughly hooked. Favourite albums are probably Perspex Island and Globe of Frogs. I'm also in an (occasional) band called The Beaker People, who have performed "Ride" and "Serpent at the Gates of Wisdom" a couple of times in public. No recording, tho. Sigh. Robyn never visits NZ, and WE have the best sea creatures, too! After reading Andy's recent note about the impending San Francisco shows I checked the SF Chronicle pink section myself, and noticed the listing for the Bottom Of The Hill dates (9/22-23) said "Robin Hitchcock". I've seen his name spelled worse, though. At his first ever San Francisco concert, the marquee over the box office at the I-Beam read "Tonight: Alfred Hitchcock & The Egyptians". Unfortunately I don't have the tools to access to the archives, so I'm going to post a few questions that may have already been covered a while back. 1. I heard rumors a few years back that Robyn was going to be moving to San Francisco. Did anything ever come of this? 2. Why does Robyn sometimes refer to himself in song as Dennis? I know the Soft Boys were once known as Dennis and the Experts, but I still don't get it. 3. Has "The Ruling Class" ever come out on vinyl or CD? My only copy is on a promo cassette single of "madonna of the wasps". It's a Great song...has he ever performed it live? 4. Has anyone else heard the "missing verse" to "Raymond Chandler Evening"? I have a tape of a show which took place well before "Element Of Light" was released on which he sings "There's a bird outside the window/there's a word inside the book/and there's blood all over everything/and I don't know where to look". That was my favorite line--I was kind of disapointed when it was left off the album. Thanks for indulging me. Everything is clear, rather brilliant, yet not perfect or too polished. Quite a charming album. Robin sings (and is produced) a little different from usual. Morris is a real standout. Kershaw is one of two British radio DJs (the other being John Peel) who have done more to introduce listeners to new and/or obscure music than all the other wasters put together. Kershaw has been a particularly strong advocate of "world" music, and is an old mate of RH and the E's. Some while ago, a series of discs came out on the new "Strange Fruit" label, featuring sessions recorded for Peel's radio shows, under the banner of "The Peel Sessions". This latest venture appears to be repeating the exercise with Kershaw's sessions, being released on the similar-sounding "Strange Roots" label. Dunno what the label is in the US, though. Hope this may be of interest to non-Brit list members! I have just returned from London with a copy of the Kershaw Sessions CD, and any enjoyment I may be having with this album is eclipsed by the nagging-suspicion-fast-becoming-certainty that the version of "Heaven" here is the same performance as that on Hen Out! I would love for someone to prove me wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure it's the same. The mix seems different, maybe, but are we really supposed to believe that Robyn has EVER done the "antelopes...etc..." section, (the part scatted over just Morris and Andy, the part that builds up to the end) the same way TWICE!? Please, anyone, point out some difference between these two recordings...a drum fill, a bass note, anything. I've tried to find something through my jet-lag haze, but to no avail. For the record, the Kershaw recording was supposed to have taken place at the Marquee, August 29, 1985, while the Hen Out recording was supposed to have been done at the Marquee on April 27 of the same year. I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed. I was really looking forward to a new recording of one of my favorite songs of all time. Even if they're just remarkably similar (rather than identical) it's hardly a useful addition to my collection. Fortunately the rest of the album is great, and there's a lot of it, so I don't feel ripped off at all. Just a bit confused. I would really like to know the truth about these recordings. On a probably unrelated note, has anyone noticed that the performance of "Heaven" on the Hen Out video is not the same as that on the album? An easy giveaway is that Robyn shouts "almost here" rather than "almost there" after "getting closer." Any comments from our discographers? brian [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Fri, 02 Sep 1994 15:00:32 -0500 (CDT) From: GOOSENMK@ctrvax.Vanderbilt.Edu Subject: Kershaw "Heaven" To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu BRIAN sez this about "Heaven" on the Kershaw Sessions: > have been done at the Marquee on April 27 of the same year. While I can't shed any light on whether the versions are identical, I was hoping for the radically reworked, glistening, shimmering acoustic version he and the Egyptians did when I saw them in Nashville on May 20, 1992. Anyone know the version I'm talking about? Better yet, have a performance of that version on a bootleg?
