I attended many (at least a dozen) of Robyn's infamous McCabe's shows. Robyn's old sound guy used to video tape his performances. The last time I saw this guy was at an Egyptians show before the release of Perspex (Bogarts, Long Beach), at which he was not running sound. >At the McCabe's show prior to the release of _Perspex Island_, there >wasn't a video camera around (from where I could see at least). If you have played in a band and covered Robin, what >did you play and why? I think the songs I'd most like to see covered are the ones I've thought of as difficult to pull off (usually because of the harmonies or guitar parts). For instance, "Sandra", "Face of Death", or "Fatman's Son". But then, you've got to be in accomplished *and* in a belligerent mood for that last one. I had a band not too long ago that did fairly good versions of "52 Stations" and "Watch Your Intelligence". I chose "52" because I had seen RH do it acoustic and was able to cop the intro from the having seen it and listening to a recording of the same. I also held particular meaning for me. I'll tell you more about that if you're really interested. I chose "WYI" because it "rocked my brains out", especially after seeing him go completely spastic on the outro in performance. Does anyone know of a source for these? Price is likely not a problem. I also have a wonderful bootleg of the Eye tour.. I forget the date/place, but the sound is great, as are the lengthy monologues Robyn does before most songs. There's also a version of Clean Steve where he injects a lot of details into certain phrases, such as... "he tore apart a stethoscop [which i foolishly left in his path although I knew him to be a destructive individual] and pointed at the sun" I'd be happy to trade copies for other Robyn shows or rare cuts.. -- falcon@FullFeed.Com [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 19 Jul 1994 09:40:11 -0300 (EDT) From: Bayard Catron Subject: Kershaw in DC; videos To: BENJAMIN KENNETH PARKE Cc: pleasure of the aching void On Mon, 18 Jul 1994, BENJAMIN KENNETH PARKE spake unto me: > Greetings Bayard, > I'm on the fegmaniax list and I'm in the D.C. area for the summer. >Assuming you live here based on your gwu.edu address, I have a question. > > If you've managed to purchase the new Kershaw Sessions CD, might you >be able to enlighten me as to which record store it may be found? > > I've looked at Tower and Olssons among others but haven't seen a >trace of it. > > Thanks. > > toad I haven't been able to locate it either... everywhere I look I find only a lonely Respect CD. Perhaps the Rockville Tower has banned RH as well, due to the doodling-on-Clapton incident? So, fellow DC residents, where have you found the much-sought-after Kershaw CD? Also, the news of the old sound guy videotaping all the McCabes Shows is most mouth-watering... does anyone have any videotaped performances? I have a fairly sizable collection of things to trade. In fact, they advertised the disc in the D.C. City Paper. They are on route 7, not too far from the 66 or 495 Tysons Corner exits. Their phone number is 703-532-6318 if you want to see if it is still in stock or get directions. (I suspect they carry it at Go! compact discs in Arlington if you are looking to be close to a Metro stop. They had a bunch of Hitchcock imports the last time I was in there. They are at 703-528-8340.) My copy is buried behind a wall of junk right now, so I can't say for sure. The song itself is one of Robyn's "short stories". It's kind of a fairy tale set to music. Good stuff, although with the EP available, I don't know that I would pay $12 on a flexi disc. I think I only payed six for my copy of the EP. Sorry, but I can't remember the date other than "mid-1991 before Perspex Island." It was just before a show he played at Cal State Fullerton with Andy and Peter Holsapple (awesome show there!) and the Egyptians show at the Whiskey (with 3/4 of REM!) thrown by A&M to celebrate the release of _Perspex Island_. Anyone know why they were left off (just space ?) or if there are any others that could have been on there, but weren't ? On a completely unrelated theme, this week's 'Time Out' magazine has a picture of Elvis Presley (early 60s, I guess) which has been altered to show him wearing a tiara and earring. Listened to it at home, and really enjoyed it. The liner notes by Andy and Morris indicate that there is a lot more stuff in the vaults - let's hear it! I particularly liked the folkier versions of "So You Think Y,ou're in Love" and "Birds in Perspex"; I felt they sounded a bit too polished on the original album. "The Banana Boat Song" is played quite straight, though it is sort of fun to imagine the three of them bellowing away in tied-at-the-waist calypso shirts. The version of "52 Stations" on this CD is really nice also. In fact, the whole thing is great, but I'm so biased ... Its offered as a flexi disc for $12 by an >> expensive dealer called Vinyl Vendors... more info if you interested/reply I'd pay $12 for it, but then it's one of the things of Robyn's I like most... It's about a young prince who awakens in a moist jungle near a castle, where a strange, fish-like (go figure...) thing (a "woman") is. He gets excited, "like a bottle of ginger beer all shaken up," they fall in love, and Happy realizes that he is a living, breathing thing. I think it's divine: a perfect fairy tale, fun, whimsical, and clever. It's also, IMNSHO, one of Robyn's better short stories: the story line is clear, the characters are very well developed, I sympathize with them both, the conflict, denoument, and resolution are well treated, and it's just plain fun. Amazing music, too: just a dab of echoed out spurts of guitar here and there (sounds like a Rickenbacker through a tube amp, with just a snitch of reverb. anybody?). And at the end, as the climax approaches, the guitar comes in full force, but slowly, like some sort of weird sunrise, with Robyn a coupla other guys chanting "Happy the Golden Prince" over and over. Priceles. It's a DAMN shame this isn't available on a CD anywhere. I can't wait for Robyn and Andy's cassette of short stories.
