I, for one, would love to see the video for Driving Aloud. In addition to the released stuff (Gotta Let This Hen Out, Brenda of the Lightbulb Eyes) I taped him playing Madonna of the Wasps on the David Letterman Show. I'm pretty sure I can get access to video equipment to do the editing. So. Any interest out there? People would have to mail their video material to me or someone else who would edit together a compilation tape and then make copies of it. Unfortunately, I taped it at EP speed. Duh. Anyone want to trade tapes? I've got an uncirculated (as far as I know) tape of a Nigel & the Crosses performance at the Cubby Bear in Chicago, 3/5/89. What I'm really looking for in trade are the b-sides from the German SYTYIL CD single, "Allright Yeah," and SPECTRE. Only 40-50 people present, which is a shame. I thought it was a great gig. Here is song list, sort of - too bad I recognise only few songs... Acoustic set: Balloon Man Madonna of the Wasps The Devils Coachman ? three songs I couldn't recognise, see below (1-3) Beautiful Girl Raining Twilight Coast ? (4-7) Electric set: ? (8-10) Only The Stones Remain Encores (acoustic): ? (11-13) Ok, here's some words from the songs I didn't recognise. I'd appreciate if someone could tell me the titles... 1) He played this one with harmonica, the song was something about "a man with woman's shadow" 2) I only remember words line..shine..queen.. beyond orbit 3) He told the song was dropped from recent Frank Sinatra duet album, because due to some computer error Frank was dueting with himself. The song was about a man with two wives, and one of them was dead. She was in the bottom of the sea waiting for him. 4) He told he wrote this song in London when he met his girlfriend, who was with two Finns... the song repeated line "I something knew" 5) Played this one with harmonica, song mentioned "the gates of wisdom..." 6) This had line "the sun reflected from the waves" and mentioned angels 7) "this is a nice song about dying of cancer", he looked over his shoulder and counted 1-2-3-4 and began to play. It began something like "yippie yippie yippie..." 8) repeated line "I'm not me", music sound a bit like Floyd's Astronomy Domine 9) "I walk through heaven... I know while I smile..." 10) Told the song is about tribe living in eastern England. Repeated something like "voo-o voo-o... won't you see for me..." 11) Song mentioned some street few times, and I only remember some random words "fingers..numbers...flies..." 12) He sayed the title is "Aeroplane with Strange Noises Isn't Substitute for Good Mother". The last lines were something about "message" 13) "I got to split, it's an old fashioned way to leave the room" Thanks. -- Aaro.Koskinen@Helsinki.FI :: finger: akoskine@kruuna.helsinki.fi night fighter song writer :: WWW: http://www.helsinki.fi/~akoskine [][][][][][][][][][] From: mrd@world.std.com (Mitchell R Dickerman) Subject: Robyn covers To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu (Fegmaniax) Date: Tue, 24 May 1994 17:16:15 -0400 (EDT) So after listening to the fine covers tape, as well as some other covers Robyn's done, I've realized that he really takes these songs and makes them his own. His cover of the Psych Furs' "The Ghost In You" is dead brilliant, as are all his Roxy Music covers. He even does Morrisey's "Every day is like Sunday" and all of a sudden it's cool! So, I was thinking (which I shouldn't do often), and here are my top 5 tunes I think Robyn should cover: 1) Psych Furs, "Love My Way". This is my favorite Furs tune, and I think Robyn crooning "...love my way, it's a new road..." would just put a whole new spin on it. 2) Bryan Ferry, uhhh, that song that starts with the sound of coins. Robyn loves Bryan's stuff (even his newer stuff), so this is a natural. 3) Jazz Butcher, "Death Dentist". This is also a natural for Robyn - a terrific goofy tune by a man I usually think of when I think of Robyn. 4) Wall Of Voodoo, "Mexican Radio". Yeah? Oh yeah, I can hear him doing the chorus in my head. It'd be best with the Egyptians, too. 5) dB's, "Amplifier". He could twist these lyrics into something evil! That's off the top of my head. What would you folks come up with? Mitch [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 24 May 1994 19:26:47 -0300 (EDT) From: Bayard Catron Subject: Re: Robyn covers To: Mitchell R Dickerman Cc: Fegmaniax Strangely, I find myself agreeing with you on the "Wall of Voodoo" assertion...though I don't think the style of that song is particularly Robynish, there is something in the way the gentleman sings the chorus that makes me believe for a moment that he is affecting a certain tone that is natural to Robyn, sort of seen through on his cover of "More than This" as he starts out rather sweet and melts after a few verses into his trademark, sharp-edged vocals. Actually Robyn's voice is very very versatile, and though some nonbelievers call it harsh, I for one (and I know I'm not the only one) love it. Anyone have any tapes with Syd covers (besides those on the covers tape)? I read in Schaffner's Pink Floyd Book that Robyn used to play "Dark Globe" and perhaps even "Bike". Would love to hear these, I think Syd's voice on the "Opel" version of Dark Globe is the most similar to Robyn's i've heard. What do you think? Apologies to Robyn for the continued haunting of Syd's fleshy ghost. I cannot help but admire them both. I can imagine hearing him pour himself into these. IMHO, here's my top 10 Robyn cover wish list: 1. Frame by Frame (King Crimson) or another by same 2. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John) 3. Heaven (Talking Heads) or Naive Melody by same 4. Pretzel Logic (Steely Dan) 5. Blasphemous Rumours (Depeche Mode) 6. It's Different for Girls (Joe Jackson) 7. Wild Sex (Oingo Boingo- back when they had a first name) or others 8. Joe's Garage (Frank Zappa) or Flakes by same 9. Mexican Radio (Wall of Voodoo) or Lonely Town (Stan Ridgeway) 10. Particle Man (They Might Be Giants) Bonus: 11. "Monday's Lunch", "Another Rotten Day", or "Severe Tire Damage" by me. And I can see right through you. I aaaam, I aaaam Superman. And I can do anything... And especially, the high-pitched chorus: You don't really love that guy you make it with, now do you? You don't really love that guy cause I can see right through you. Anybody know idea where this song originates? Another wish that's a little more than impossible would be Robyn singing a duet with CHER. Robyn's voice would make a perfect Sonny. Endquote "Superman" is on _Life's Rich Pageant_. The original version is by a band called the Clique. I heard it once; it's really cool. If anyone can point to a "Pebbles" album or something where the song could be found, I'd appreciate it. As for Robyn covers, I don't agree with those who want to see him sing "wacky" songs like "Death Dentist" by the Jazz Butcher or "Particle Man" by TMBG or "Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo. His best covers are when he takes a straight song and twists it around into something strange and wonderful. Now I like all the songs I named above, and there are a lot of songs by the Jazz Butcher that might be great for Robyn to sing ("Girl Go" and "Onion Field" and "Harlan" come to mind) but if they're already "wacky," what's the point? I'd like to hear him do "Sloth" by Richard Thompson, "5D" by the Byrds, "Sin City" by Gram Parsons and the Burrito Bros., "Never Said" by Liz Phair, "Yesterday is Gone" by Tom Waits, "Death of a Clown" by Dave Davies, and "You should Never Have Opened that Door" by the Ramones, arranged as a ballad. I'll post more as they come to me; these I thought of just as I was typing online. -- TJC "Surprisingly tasty..." The Jazz Butcher ("JB v. A couple of years ago I saw RH and the E's here in Toronto, and they encored with "Eight Miles High"; it appears on the B-side of the "So You Think You're in Love" CD, and its OK. But live is a different story. I swear everyone's collective jaws were hitting the ground, it was so electrifying. The Robyn and Cher idea is interesting; however, I could more imagine him duetting with Nancy Sinatra, especially something like "Some Velvet Morning" or "Sundown". I'd always imagined him (actually, I've always been surprised he hasn't been) covering Pink Floyd's "If". Though what VHAWKINS wrote: "The Robyn and Cher idea is interesting; however, I could more imagine him duetting with Nancy Sinatra, especially something like "Some Velvet Morning"or "Sundown"." is far more believable for me. I could see him doing "Some Velvet Morning" with Maisie, or maybe "Saying Something Stupid" with that bouffant-coiffed gal from the B-52s. Or "Jackson". I can't help it, I'm a *big* Nancy Sinatra fan. Or how's about "Don't Tell Me I've Got Nothing To Do" -- the line in that song, "Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" just yells at Robyn for him to do it. Or something by Pete Townshend, maybe "Ask Yourself" or "Cookin'" or "My Girl Gives It Away". On a serious note, I've always secretly wished he'd do something with Virginia Astley -- her stuff is so similar to IODOT that it wouldn't be much of a stretch for either, and boy would it be beautiful. Or, it'd be cool if Robyn, Andy, and Morris just played and recorded the entire Rubber Soul album or something. That'd be a hoot. The possibilities are endless. Someone else mentioned Tom Waits - I think Waits's "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" would work great for Robyn with a "Balloon Man" style arrangement. Some songs by The Church might fit Robyn's style - I'm thinking specifically of "Under The Milky Way", "Monday Morning" and "Disappointed". I'd like him to cover just about anything by the Pretenders or Psychedelic Furs - and Robyn has already proved, on "When I Was Dead" that he practically does a better Richard Butler than Richard Butler himself. (Which is not an insult - I think Richard Butler is COOL, huh huh.) For some reason, I can imagine Robyn doing the Cars' "You Might Think". Or Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side". When you get right down to it, Robyn could cover Barney's "I love you, you love me" song and it would be listenable. Almost. This has long been a top favorite of mine, and my one greatest wish for Robyn to cover. Acoustic, electric, with backup, I think he could do no wrong. Thanks for pointing this one out, Susan. Friends of Robyn, you may wish to pass this sentiment along :) Wow, no Barrett covers info? I guess he gave them up a few years back when he got real sick of all the comparisions. What about a hip-hop Robyn? I think this is what he was moving towards on "Wafflehead". Would be fun to hear him rap. Sounds like lunacy, I know, but it just might work. Of course I like it best when it's just him and the guitar, personally.
