Their tastes are pretty good as far as covers. Besides The Kinks "Picture Book" on one of their albums they have covered "Ted, Woody and Junior" found only on a tape, sold during their last tour,of covers and outtakes. If there are any fans of 1960's Village Green era Kinks, or good 1960's pop it would be a good idea to check these guys out. Recommended is "This one's for the ladies". I can dub the cover of Ted, Woody and Junior if anyone is interested. I think few of us here agree on >everything--one man's IODOT is another man's GOF (I like the latter quite well >myself, but I think you can follow the analogy, given conventional wisdom on >both). BUT I like to hear WHY people feel the way they do. So a C- for your >message--not because of your opinion, but because your opinion isn't backed >by evidence. I'd LOVE to explain why. (IMHO on). First off, I may be confused because what I was dumping on was the R.E.M. cover that appears as an extra cut on a 3-track Man on the Moon CD. I've seen discussion, however, centering on 1) RH's original, 2) R.E.M.'s cover, and 3) a Michael Stipe version. I don't know what the last is - I'm assuming #2 is the thing I've got on my Man on the Moon CD. Anyway, back to the story... I too am a long-standing R.E.M. fan back from Chronic Town days and liked Out of Time tremendously. (I found "Losing My Religion" about as exciting as a Led Zeppelin medley, however, but Top 40 rules.) So I wasn't predisposed to dislike their cover of Arms of Love. BUT what do I get for my hard-earned bucks? (IMHHHHHO on.) I get: a) the beautiful chord structure reduced to a pair of uninteresting strums welded to a metronome beat b) a backing vocal track that points the upward-rising poignant ache of the song off into the underbrush c) excessive and gratuitous (and trademarked) Stipe quavering/tremolo'ing (IMHHHHHO off.) I was not a happy camper. The feature I liked most of the original was the chord change that happens behind his vocal line "Anytime *now*, you're flying..." and "Tell me you'll *soon* be crawling" and it was gone gone gone. Given R.E.M.'s talent, I couldn't understand this which is why I said in my original posting that their version was incomprehensibly bad. (IMHO off.) Okalee-dokalee. Mostly I like R.E.M. stuff and I particularly like Mike Mills' bass work. Perhaps my expectations were too high to begin with. -- JP P.S. Muchos gracias Simon Roberts for the chords to MWAMDW! I like the REM version of Arms of Love better than Robyn's. Here's my rationale: The song just seems to fit the REM version better. The chord progre ssion is VERY simple and VERY basic. A simple song structure fits a simple arrangement. Robyn's arrangement just sounds overblown and pretentious, frankly. Plus, the lyrics convey a simple message of longing and heartbreak wh ich is very fitting to the country hick style of the REM song. Granted, the REM lyrics are changed a lot from Robyn's, which aren't as simple. It sounds like someone in REM was trying to remember the words from memory. There's only so much you can do with the same chords and the same words over and over, and it's to Robyn's credit that he can still make the song interesting with that arrangement. However, the REM version still sounds more genuine and sincere. Remember, this is all my very humble opinion. Interestingly enough, the REM version was released first. I bought my "Man on the Moon" single in December of 1992, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but Respect wasn't out until early 1993. Eh voila! I have no quarrel with you now. In fact, I'd ask all fegmaniax to try to explain your opinions rather than just saying "Globe of Frogs sucks!" In truth, many (most?) of us do so already, but it's always useful to answer the question "why?" So good job, Mr. Partridge! Later, Miles [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: arms of love Date: Mon, 18 Apr 1994 09:51:06 EDT From: Thomas Narten To those of you discussing AOL, note that Robyn has done several variations on that tune. As is often the case, a different version completely changes one's impression of a tune. That's why the "what is Robyn's best/worst album" is meaningless IMHO. AOL was being played as long ago as spring 91. I personally like the early acoustic versions very much more than the version that appeared on Respect. Check out the version from Mountain Stage 1992 (available on 'best of mtn stage vol 2' I believe) or on 'Live Death'. The same is true (even more so) for 'When I was Dead'. That song comes out strongest with a minimal arrangment. I don't think I can name a best or worst album. They have all produced great songs. That is not the same thing as saying the albums are great. Lots of folks point to 'element of light' as their fave. I only think it's OK, but must admit that it has more than its share of great songs; 'airscape' is one of robyn's best, though not that particular version. Ditto for IODOT. 'uncorrected personality traits' is good, but some of the more recent live versions are astounding thanks to Morris & Andy's added harmonies. Don't like GOF? Well, it's hard to top some of the live versions of 'chinese bones'. I personally find the production on PI a bit too uniform. I much prefer the earlier acoustic versions of 'Oceanside' and SYTYIL. On the other hand, I haven't yet heard a version of 'Birds in Perspex' that beats the album version. That song alone makes the album worthwhile to me. So, be careful about confusing the quality of an album with the quality of the song. And of course those of you ragging on 'Eye' simply don't know what you're talking about. :-) Thomas [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 19 Apr 94 16:15 BST From: andyh@cogs.susx.ac.uk (Andy Holyer) To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: First bit of Robyn Web stuff. My copy is in Chicago at the moment, else I'd offer to colour xerox it for you. The songs also came out on the German release of the SYTYIL single. It came out to coincide with their Euro tour in late '91, so it could be a promo as well. (It's got tour dates on the insert.) I did not live here at that time, someone in France obtained me a copy of the single. Woj did put those extra songs on one incarnation of his "unreleased songs" tape. I disagree (but not rudely--everyone is entitled to their opinion, obviously), not about it being a simple song, because it can be, but about Robyn's being pretentious. I too had the REM version first, and when I heard Robyn's soaring guitar solo, I was so much happier. REM's version is valid, though slightly vapid, and I agree with the guy who said that it sorta divests Robyn's lyrics of their message. But it does work as a novelty number. > Granted, the REM lyrics are changed a lot from Robyn's, which aren't as > simple.
