To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Kind of a weird question. I was talking to a friend today, and she told me that her sister was a pretty big Soft Boys fan. I was glad to hear that, of course. Then, she went on to mention how over Spring Break her sister had been really excited to find this Soft Boys record that had some sort of picture on the cover of little people, or some people, sitting in the forest, or going into a forest, and the cover was mainly green. Now, personally, I think she was referring to 'Invisible Hits', but I kind of wonder if maybe there's some really strange record lurking around out there that I haven't heard about. Like I said, I'm pretty positive she was probably just referring to 'Invisible Hits', but if somebody knows something that proves that thought wrong, I'd love to hear about it. Ie., is there some weird mystery record floating through the "collective unconscious, like a watery headlight"? (BTW, thanks, Woj, for that wicked exciting letter from Robyn.) On another tangent, is it just me, or does the beginning picked intro. to "So You Think You're In Love" sound identical to the picked intro. of "Queen of Eyes"? And, on yet another tangent, the chords for "Wax Doll" are: F and A# for the verses, and G and F for the chorus. And, finally...I don't think this song is much fun to play or sing, but the chords for "Superman" seem to be: C for the verses, and F, G, and C for the chorus. Have fun, kids. daveR. The number on it is: 9362-40698-2 W0142CD Them's the facts, here's the opinion: it sucks. Before y'all incinerate me, I just want to point out that 1) I'm saying R.E.M. sucks, not that RH sucks so you can't incinerate me unless this is an R.E.M. newsgroup, which it ain't. BUT I must enter a dissent about the R.E.M. "Arms of Love." I am not only a Robyn fan, but an R.E.M. fan, since _Murmur_ days. And still a fan (I like _Out of Time_ about as well as anything they'd done). And I actually LIKE R.E.M.'s version of "Arms of Love." So not everyone here hates it. What I DON'T like in your message is how you don't explain WHY you think R.E.M. or their cover of "Arms" "sucks." I think few of us here agree on everything--one man's IODOT is another man's GOF (I like the latter quite well myself, but I think you can follow the analogy, given conventional wisdom on both). BUT I like to hear WHY people feel the way they do. So a C- for your message--not because of your opinion, but because your opinion isn't backed by evidence. Well, I'm a rather large REM fan, and I alternately hate the cover and like it. I dislike it only in comparison to Robyn's version. If I manage to judge it as an REM song (sometimes I can perform such mental feats), it is a cute little ditty, and certainly they must be commended for doing it in the first place. Being the one who opened this particular can of crabs, I must reiterate, however, that I've not heard the Stipe-only version, and can therefore draw no conclusions on it (aah, that logic thing). But while we're on the subject of Robyn covers, a friend just popped a copy of the Fastbacks' version of Queen of Eyes on me. I never heard the band before--from what he told me, they're sorta bubblegummy--but all I know is that the cover is worth seeking out. Not too far a cry from Robyn's version, but the woman's vocals give it a different take. Anyone else familiar with this one? Plus, has anyone listened with as much glee to Kristin Hersh's _Hips and Makers_ as I have? It is analogous to Robyn's acoustic solo albums, denser and more passionate than his electric stuff. It reminds me more of _Eye_ than IODOT--it just seems to me that the former is more personal than the latter. but then, I am always floored by what I miss in Robyn's lyrics, when I hear or read him explicate them himself, so allow me to slip this in with a hearty IMHO disclaimer.
