AS filler for the 93 show B-side, take your pick of these interviews: Two decent ones in late 91, one with Bob Waugh (WHFS Washington/Baltimore) In which Robyn talks a bit about _Perspex_ and other things and plays live SYTYIL, V&D, and Alright Yeah. The third interview, recorded before the Birchmere show in VA (need this show!) in 1990, is without question the most ludicrous interview I have ever heard. Robyn is asked what names he would choose for his children and his pets, is told that _The Village Voice_ has called his music "weak" and not "angry" enough (the question before this was in reference to "sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl") yet he still manages somehow to be his interesting self. I'm the only person who has a copy of this one, besides the interviewers, but I think it should be released as a prime example of how not to interview Robyn. Also have Robyn from FM: 1992 "Inauguaral Ball" (short) and something he did on MTV last year. Why, Robyn?? Lots of other groups available, so "Just Ask". I spent it in San Francisco, so this is only helpful to those of you who are/will be there. (quite beautiful, especially coming from Minnesota!) I only hit the three R's on haight street, and Reckless Records seemed to have the most stuff. They had a One Long Pair red vinyl 12", a picturdisk of Exploding in Silence, a Balloon Man cd single, a white vinyl Groovy Decay, an Ultra-Unbelievable Love cd single, the non picturedisk version of the Wading Through a Ventilator ep put out by delorean, and a few of the albums (I forgot which). Didn't find anything other than that at either Recycled or Rough Trade, but if Reckless is out of something, check one of those two, as they had much of the same things. I also went to Portland, but nothing to report from there except that I found a copy Live At The Portland Arms (funny that I found it in Portland :^>) at Birdsuite east records. Don't bother looking for it though, as I snatched that up fairly quickly. To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Last week Fleur said: "...sly dig at those people who think this list is a good place to discuss what they DON'T like about Robyn." Oh dear. Did I bring this on when I said: "Why doesn't anybody *really* like _Perspex Island_?" This was not meant as an invitation to "diss" Robyn, but was an expression of my own perplexity. I've noticed that when people talk about the songs and albums that they most enjoy, this one is rarely mentioned. People don't say they dislike it; they just don't seem to be enthusiastic about it, and I wondered why. It can't be the songwriting--Perspex has some of the most lovely, angry, introspective and revealing songs Robyn's done--and I would argue the overall level of quality, the consistency of the songwriting, is very high indeed, even by Robyn's standards. So I wondered, is my perception about the Fegmaniacs' preferences wrong, or is there something about the album that puts people off-- its "mainstream" sound perhaps. In fact it has been a revelation to me how much we all differ in our judgements of the Robyn's work, agreeing that he's wonderful and unique, but disagreeing completely on the relative merits of his albums. One person's utter favorite will be the one album someone else sold back to their record store. Sometime back someone suggested one's age might have something to do with it: younger fans prefer his earlier work, those Robyn's age, his more recent work. This makes a certain amount of sense to me--as you get older you probably read more into certain songs than you would have when you were younger. When I listen to "So You Think You're In Love", I hear a very wry, ironic statement about falling in love by someone who's been there too often before and been burned by the experience. It's not a light, "pop" song at all, despite its bright sound, to my ear. The sequence in which one heard Robyn's work may also have something to do with how one feels about a specific album. I was disappointed with _Globe of Frogs_ and _Queen Elvis_, but I heard these after I'd heard _Element of Light_, _Fegmaniax_, and _Groovey Decoy_, and my feeling was really one of, "there's nothing new here". Someone who heard his albums in a different order will have had a different experience. (Keep in mind, I've found that *all* of Robyn's albums have *at least* two songs that blow your socks off. Two really good songs per album is the very best many bands can do.) I also saw Robyn for the very first time during his _Perspex Island_ tour, thus the songs from that album evoke especially fond memories for me; if you first saw Robyn at an earlier stage of his career, the songs you heard that night probably have a golden glow for you. But I'm starting to ramble now. I am perplexed by the number of negative reactions to "Perspex Island", which I think is one of Robyn's best. Maybe it was just a little too glossy for many folks - it did have more of a sheen to it, like it was produced with the expectation that it would crossover to a mainstream audience. Which it didn't. Which is because the mainstream audience are anencephalic bozos who think Mariah Carey's remake of "Without You" is a truly emotional piece of music. But that's just my not-so-humble opinion. I AM bugged by the way flaming has become the thing-du-jour around here, as it seems to be on newsgroups, BBS's, etc., lately. Do we all have spring fever or what? I'm the "guilty" party who made the post a while back saying that the Crash Test Dummies' current single sounded like Robyn - just an innocent statement of opinion, so I thought - and WHOOSH!, it was like watching the movie "Backdraft". I feel like I need an asbestos suit if I'm going to post here! This is not right. But hey, not long before I posted that, someone had sent a note complaining that things were dead around here - they've been more lively since that little flame war. Anyway, an exchange of ideas is always welcome, I just hope that ideas which diverge from the general consensus can be appreciated, if not shared. Jill [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 11 Apr 1994 00:03:27 -0300 (EDT) From: Bayard Catron Subject: Faces of Robyn (was: did I offend?) To: MARTINP@cgsvax.claremont.edu Cc: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu I think perhaps the reason most longtime Robyn fans don't like _Perspex_ as much as his earier works is due perhaps to the straightforward nature of the album... the younger Robyn often utilised intricate, riddle-like references and lyrical constructions that only we Fegmaniax could fully understand. This could also account for the critical acclaim and widespread airplay the album received. (WHFS gave lots of airtime to not only SYTYIL, but also UUL, even perhaps a third from the album and I even heard Dark Green Energy a few times. I only heard Driving Aloud and Yip a few times, and for a relatively brief span at that.) IMO, the complexity of the earlier, less-immediately-understandable works is preferable to the musical complexity of the highly-polished _Perspex_ and last year's release, which in my very humble opinion is overproduced/overthought beyond possibility of seeing the very personal, very ingenious Robyn of _Eye_ and _IODOT_. It pains me to go to the record store and find only his major label stuff, to listen to the radio and hear only _If_You_Were_A_Priest_ as reminder of pre-A&M Robyn. BTW, what's this about them dropping him? And what is the scoop on the new album? I hesitate to speak for Robyn, especially as a means of backing up my own insignificant views, but in an 1991 interview in the B.O.B. he speaks quite candidly about his own opinions of his work; I have not heard him do so anywhere else. He pretty much dismisses GOF as "self-consious smoke" and "rent-a-Hitchcock" and states profound dissatisfaction with the thick produced sound of the _QE_ album. He said he likes the GOF track and "chinese bones" (as is evidenced by how often he's been playing them live.) I think he was still happy with _Perspex_ overall. For myself, I can only say I have nothong but respect and admiration for Robyn, and would never accuse him of "Selling out" no matter what happens to his sound. He seems to me to be too honest for that, and too faithful to himself, even if he confesses apathy for other causes (in the 1990 interview I got from someone at GW radio.) He is who he is, including whatever incarnations and spirits he might possess. Who I am has not yet been fully realised, but as I did say before older musicians' work doesn't turn me on like their "old stuff." I am now the age Robyn was when he started publishing, and I adore everything he did until he signed with a major label. I see that which followed (excepting _Eye_, of course) as being somehow something less. This is not his fault, or anyone's. It is a function of the mirror of my mind. Bayard Catron "Love is the distance between reality and pain." Washington DC -Robyn Hitchcock PS. Robyn also cites "Airscape" and "Glass", as well as "other songs" from EoL, F!, and _Trains_ as being "really good." High praise from one so modest. PPS. I don't care what anyone says, _Invisible Hitchcock_ is exquisite as well. So is BSDR. Both undermentioned by this group, IMO. This summer we should have two new tapes available by mail order. One is a tape of my short stories, with music by Andy, myself and others: I'm hoping to persuade the legendary James Fletcher to read one of them but he is traumatized from finding his linen-key in a sneaker. The other tape will be the SOFA BOYS live in London and Cambridge last January. The SOFT bOYS U.S. tour is looking unlikely this year, but you never know. We certainly don't. Kindly Mr Ripley has brought me a hot drink, and is now chopping up logs in the back yard. It's spring and Jamie Metcalfe is seven weeks old. Meanwhile me and the other Pyramids are working on our new album, Surfer Ghost, which should be out next year, if there is one. Also a host of back catalogue stuff, including trillions of unreleased tracks, should be available soon. This won't be on A&M by the way. Also in the almost graspable future are solo gigs from me in Canada, and all of us (including Sean, our lovley new guitarist) in Moscow and St. Petersburg. If so, could someone drop a line with this info - I haven't the patience to battle my incompetence in figuring out songs by ear. Thanks! Also - the IODOT version of 'Bones in the Ground' contains the lyric: "I don't care what you're called, I just want to shave you bald & I'll know I've finished my search." On the other hand, when I saw him play this tune live solo acoustic, the line was changed thusly: "I just want to shave you bald in a place the police never search." {no my memory isn't that good, but I taped the show so I can go back and check} Although many lines were changed in concert (mostly for humor value and some seemingly spontaneously) and many songs progress and develop, this change really suprised me - it seems so blatantly sexual & so different from the feel of the rest of the song. Is this a consistent lyrical change or was it just a funny improv? Just wondering... Take care... -ed. The results are: Yes votes: 218 No votes: 116 There were two abstentions. This margin is insufficient for newgroup creation; there needed to be 100 more YES than NO votes (this was met), and two-thirds of the votes needed to be YES (this was not met). There will now be a five-day period during which corrections to the vote count may be made. Barring sufficient corrections to change the result, the group will not be created, and the proposal to create rec.music.beach-boys may not be formally discussed again for six months. This vote was conducted by a neutral third party.
