At a show in the Fast Lane, at Asbury Park, NJ, Robyn and Andy quoted repeatedly and with malice aforethought from the Holy Grail in between songs. Being a bit of an overzealous Python fan, I was almost disappointed that they quoted the "typical" Python fare, but I guess I'm just a weenie, and I should be happy with what I got. Sigh. I hate that name. The album is called "Groovy Decay", dammit. A curse on Line for getting the title wrong. I've always considered "Groovy Decay" to be one of Robyn's weaker albums. Not that it doesn't have its moments, mind you. America is definitely one of Robyn's better tracks, The Cars She Used to Drive is vintage Hitchcock, as is The Rain. But personally I could certainly live without ever hearing Midnight Fish again. Apologies to those who feel differently. One interesting note is that the Line version has completely different versions of several of the songs on the album. Considering the fact that Albion remixed the original album after Hitchcock and Hillage gave it to them, to the point where Robyn almost disowned it, the mis-titled Line release is very important indeed to the Hitchcock collecter. Perhaps I would've liked the entire album better had the original Hitchcock/Hillage mixes been released. +########################################################################+ +###+ Paul Cohen, Philadelphia, PA +###+ +########################################################################+ +###+ P.COHEN@genie.geis.com +###+ PMCOHEN@aol.com +###+ +###+ 70703.3126@compuserve.com +###+ PMCOHEN@delphi.com +###+ +########################################################################+ [][][][][][][][][][] From: furrygreen@aol.com To: owner-fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Date: Fri, 01 Apr 94 22:13:46 EST Subject: Perspex Island I also like Perspex Island. [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Sat, 02 Apr 1994 08:14:30 -0600 (CST) From: GOOSENMK@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu Subject: Perspex Island, She's my Girl To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu RE: Liking or disliking Perspex Island Personally, I think Perspex Island is among Robyn's best work. When I first brought it home, I was extremely disappointed--the album seemed flat, not very adventurous, and rarely broke its mid-tempo trot. I chalked it up to attempting to become accessable to a wider audience, BUT I continued to play it, hoping I'd find something to like. After all, it was a Robyn Hitchcock record... After the third play, the album began to open up to me. The album was filled with wonderful delights bubbling beneath the surface, requiring the listener to look a bit harder and longer to perceive, but the reward were great indeed. The subtle expansiveness of "Ride" opened up before me, the beauty and sadness of "She Doesn't Exist" became tangible, the joyous release of "Birds In Perspex"became my own. I realized that Hitchcock had made a different kind of album, one that better suited a man entering his 40s, one whose appeal relied not so much on clever puns or the desperatation one can only feel in one's 20s and 30s when years of rejection and treading water begin to corrode one's soul [I'm not saying HITCHCOCK's albums were treading water--in fact I believe quite the opposite--I'm speaking about life in general], but on the dedication of a mature craftsman, moving into a different phase of his life, assuming the role of master of his trade and father of his children, with a deeper appreciation for the beauties and dangers of this life that only age can bring. To me, Perspex Island ranks with Lou Reed's New Sensations or Springsteen's Lucky Town as proof that rock musicians don't have to be perpetually mired in a state of suspended adolescence but can move on to make music that is every bit as emotional and moving as the music of their youth but tempered and deepened with experience and age. If I had to choose between, say, Underwater Moonlight,I Often Dream of Trains, Globe of Frogs, and Perspex Island, I don't know which I'd choose, since each represents to me the apex of a different phase in Robyn's career. So I'll go on enjoying all of them.... Later, Miles Goosens ...gonna rock on to the Oceanside [][][][][][][][][][] From: LJ Subject: Groovy DeCAY...! To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Date: Sat, 2 Apr 1994 10:49:27 -0500 (EST) Yes, i too have been frantically searching all used CD stores everywhere I go for an original "Groovy Decay"-- alas, all I have is the DECOY. Oh well. As far as this album sucking goes, I will say that it is not one of my favorites, but there is still an awful lot of really good music on it. I often just set the memory on my CD player to play _The Rain_ over and over and over again for hours at a time (yes god bless my neighbors, and yes I am really NUTS, eh?). lj [][][][][][][][][][] From: fshbwlhead@aol.com To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Date: Sun, 03 Apr 94 22:50:11 EDT Subject: Re: Groovy DeCAY...! I've had no luck finding Groovy Decay anywhere, on vinyl or CD. I had it taped from someone in 1986 for awhile until it broke. Then Decoy came alone. Groovy Decoy's sound is nice and threatening. St. Petersburg, Midnight Fish -- dark arrangements. I listen to it when I'm feeling especially reckless or decadent. I haven't heard Decay in years, so I can't compare the two back to back at this time. Incidently, there's this band from Detroit, JOE LAWLESS, that have a tape out called CATCH YOUR DEATH. Here is the tree. One of the branch leaders should have his tape today, and the others will shortly as well. Simply find your name in the tree, and then go backwards to find your parent (the first email address with a lower number in front of it). Contact your parent to work out details of how to get the tape. In most cases, you will either work out a trade, or send a blank tape TOGETHER WITH RETURN POSTAGE! Remember, your parent is doing you a favor. Don't repay them by expecting them to pay for postage if they aren't getting something from you (e.g., via a trade). Have a little patience as well. It will probably take 2-4 weeks before you get your tape when all is done and said. Mail takes time, as does working out the details of a trade, finding time to actually dub the tapes, etc. Also, not everyone reads mail everyday, so don't panic if your mail is unanswered after only 1 or 2 days. If you have problems that go beyond normal delays, let me know. I intend to see that everyone gets the tape they signed up for. The covers tape is 100 minutes long. The covers part is about 51 minutes, and I've filled it out with a 30 minute 1993 Mountain Stage set (from FM), plus the promo B-sides 'alright yeah', 'live-in years', 'bright fresh flowers', and 'dark green energy' (all from CDs). I've tried as best possible to get preserve Dolby. That is, if you requested Dolby B, your parent should have as well. I believe that all branch leaders have the ability to dub tapes with any dolby setting, so you can still change your selection. Branch leaders: Please make an effort to contact your children. Not everyone who signed up is a fegmaniax subscriber, though most are. Once again, thanks go to Gene Hopstetter for extracting the tape from A&M and making it available to us.
