I wouldn't be surprised to see RH mentioned as an influence in the CTD's bio. Had RH wrote the song, he probably would have left off a MM's and put in a chorus! ;^) There seems to be a major push from record companys to promote new artist while established artists w/ smaller followings seem to fall through the cracks. Blind Melon, CTD, and Counting Crows have appeared on Sat. Night Live this season (does anybody still watch SNL?). My point being that the promo money seems to be aimed at new artists while RH had to sponsor his last tour himself to save $$ (didn't I read that in a digest?) At the last RH album signing, somebody asked about the availablity of RH's back catelog. He said "What you have in your hot little hands is all there is". But now Soft Boys works are being reissued and RH back catelog is said to be coming soon. I read a favorable review of the Soft Boys compilation in SPIN magazine. The reviewer even recommended Underwater Moonlight! So maybe things are looking up for RH! Here's to new fans, Mike. Sorry if this has been seen alread. I think my first post got lost. Hope it's more interesting than that "flame" post! Todd [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 21 Mar 1994 01:16:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Doug Davis Subject: The Damned's "Gigolo" To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Hello Fegmaniacs. My first post to the list, after weeks of lurking, and I don't mean to go on about a potential FAQ, but ... Does anyone know the story behind The Damned's song "Gigolo," from "Anything"? Seems to be a thinly veiled attack on RH's Syd B. fascination. Don't have the disc with me now (or much use for pronouns, apparently), but the tune begins with the organ riff from Syd's "Gigolo Aunt," and includes what clearly is intended to be some sort of take on the bridge from "My Wife and My Dead Wife," ending with a snide "Nobody cares!" Hmm. What's the deal here? I've heard that "Anything" includes a number of pretty snide, clever musical references like this. [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: ROBYN TAPE TREE (Mass Acknowledgment) Date: Mon, 21 Mar 1994 07:35:48 EST From: Thomas Narten I've appended a list of all the folks who have signed up for the tree as of 7:30AM EST today. If you want to obtain a copy of this tape, please sign up ASAP. If you are on the list below, you're all set. Just sit back and wait. Please note that it will take a while for most folks to receive tapes. I have a copy of the tapes in my possession and it will be another week before the branch leaders get their tapes. I'll post exact details of the tree then. If you have already signed up, but your name is not listed below, sign up again. I've processed all the requests that I know of. Also, you will be pleased to know that Gene & I have worked out an arrangement whereby I will obtain a DAT copy of his master, effectively removing one analog generation from all tapes obtained from the tree. The branch leaders getting tapes from me will be 2nd generation (counting Gene's as first gen off the A&M master). I hope to be able to keep the tree broad enough so that all leaf nodes are 3rd generation or less. For those of you not familiar with tape trees, the idea is that anyone wanting a copy of the tape signs up. Someone (in this case me) sets up a tree in which everybody has one parent and one or more children. Each person works out a trade with their parent and then clones tapes for each of their children (if they have any). Folks lacking the ability to dub tapes are made leaves of the tree (e.g., they have no children). Folks that cannot dub tapes, or don't have an amazing tape collection to offer to their parents can send cash or blanks to their parents. It's as simple as that! I've appended the original announcement for those of you who didn't see it. Follow the instructions given there to sign up.
