Tape tree ROBYN TAPE TREE Introduction Robyn on "News at Ten" [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: Re: ROBYN TAPE TREE Date: Wed, 16 Mar 1994 07:48:38 EST From: Thomas Narten I've appended a list of all the folks who have signed up for the tree as of 7:30AM EST. If you want to obtain a copy of this tape, please sign up ASAP. If you are on the list below, you're all set. Just sit back and wait. Please note that it will take a while for most folks to receive tapes. It will be about a week before I get the tapes, and another week (minimum) after that before the branch leaders get tapes. If you have already signed up, but your name is not listed below, sign up again. I've processed all the requests that I know of. Also, you will be pleased to know that Gene & I have worked out an arrangement whereby I will obtain a DAT copy of his master, effectively removing one analog generation from all tapes obtained from the tree. The branch leaders getting tapes from me will be 2nd generation (counting Gene's as first gen off the A&M master). I hope to be able to keep the tree broad enough so that all leaf nodes are 3rd generation or less. For those of you not familiar with tape trees, the idea is that anyone wanting a copy of the tape signs up. Someone (in this case me) sets up a tree in which everybody has one parent and one or more children. Each person works out a trade with their parent and then clones tapes for each of their children (if they have any). Folks lacking the ability to dub tapes are made leaves of the tree (e.g., they have no children). Folks that cannot dub tapes, or don't have an amazing tape collection to offer to their parents can send cash or blanks to their parents. It's as simple as that! I've appended the original announcement for those of you who didn't see it. Follow the instructions given there to sign up. I'm gonna setup and run a tree for the two robyn tapes of Gene's. *Please* stop sending him mail about them. It appears that both tapes fit on a single 100 minute cassette tape, so that is what everybody gets. No exceptions, please. The tape I'm getting will be 2nd generation (counting Gene's as 1st gen off of A&M's master). I'll transfer the tape to DAT to insure its preservation for future generations of 'yet unborn' fans. If you want a DAT clone, that can be arranged. I'll then make 6 or more dubs for branch leaders of the tree. Exact details will depend on how big the tree gets. I'll do my best to see that the depth of the tree stays small. I do not have the tapes yet, so it will take a week or so before things get rolling. PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE! In the meantime, I will set up the tree itself. Please answer the following questions and send your reply to me (not Gene!). Simply replying to this message should do the trick. ================Clip Here================ Name: email: USmail: US Phone: Dolby Preference: Can you clone tapes: Your dubbing setup: ================End Entry Form================ >Date: Thu, 3 Mar 1994 13:34:42 -0600 >Mime-Version: 1.0 >To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu >From: gene@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu (Gene Hopstetter) >Subject: Details on those amazing tapes! >Here are the details on those two amazing tapes I recently acquired. >The oh-so-rare solo acoustic tape. I do not have much of anything worth trading, I'm afraid, unless there are folks out there who like obscure British art/progressive bands from the late 60s - early 70s. I have some out of print things I could tape when I get my stereo set up again. I am willing to contribute $ for a tape, though. With the Not-on-CD tape, the master made its way around, and everyone got a second-generation copy. It sounds like what you have in mind is that each person makes a copy for the NEXT guy. It might be easier just for each person to make a copy for themselves. Still, I'm looking forward to hearing Robyn play "Dominoes"... - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Thu, 17 Mar 1994 23:30:56 -0400 (EDT) From: Bayard Catron Subject: Re: Introduction To: M.J.Mooney@bradford.ac.uk Cc: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Welcome to the list, Mike. I am fairly new as well, and am very pleased to be a part of this. Robyn is by far my favorite artist (and entertainer, for that matter.) It's interesting that you mention not liking REM's new stuff due to "getting old"... did you mean you, or them? I find that I generally prefer a band's early or middle work to their later stuff, probably becauseI'm still somewhat young. (25.) And As others age and mature, I suppose they leave me behind for now. Also they tend to get too soft and main-stram, IMHO. Robyn was just about my age when he started recording. But as you're just about Robyn's age, I guess you've seen eye-to-eye all along. Have you met Robyn as well as REM? I hear the Soft Boys are touring Europe now and will be coming to the US as well. Can you confirm? Bayard Catron "Love is the distance between reality and pain." There was a feature about "chart rigging" and Robyn mentioned how he had done well in the US charts, but couldn't make an impact on the charts in the UK because of the way the system works. The Egyptians were shown playing but I don't have any more informations on this. There was no mention of Crash Test Dummies. sm [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
