The music of the Beach Boys, led by Brian Wilson, has changed the sound of music forever, and their contributions can be seen in many artists today. All the surviving members of the Beach Boys are still making and performing music today. There is much more to the Beach Boys than just surf and car music. In the mid to late sixties the Beach Boys were making music of such artistic quality it is comparable only to the Beatles of the same period. HOW TO VOTE ----------- You should send E-MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to: jamesm@dialogic.com Just replying by E-MAIL to this message should work, assuming you are reading this using standard newsreader software. Your mail message should contain one and only one of the following statements: I vote YES on rec.music.beach-boys I vote NO on rec.music.beach-boys I ABSTAIN on rec.music.beach-boys I CANCEL my vote on rec.music.beach-boys You may add a comment, or use other wording, but only a definite, unconditional, unambiguous statement for or against the creation of rec.music.beach-boys will count as a vote. Neither ABSTAIN nor CANCEL messages are counted as votes; they serve only to cancel any previous vote. Abstentions are noted in the final vote list, whereas CANCEL removes your vote from that list entirely. (This is the only difference between the two.) If you later change your mind you may vote again; only your last valid vote will count. All votes will be acknowledged by E-mail. If you don't receive an acknowledgment within a few days of your vote, vote again. It is your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly. If you attempt multiple votes or other vote fraud, all your votes may be canceled and your name published. RESULT ------ The complete vote list will be posted with the vote result, including how each person voted. Note that Usenet votes are not done by secret ballot. There will then be a five-day period during which the published vote list may be corrected and any irregularities addressed. The requirements for group creation are 100 more YES votes than NO votes, and 2/3 of all counted votes being YES. -- Mark James *** Opinions, errors etc are mine. *** Dialogic Corporation, 300 Littleton Road | "You have violated Robot's Rules Parsippany NJ 07054, U.S.A. | of Order and will be asked to +1 201 334 1268 ext 438 | leave the future immediately." Is this Robyn's father, as listed in the liner notes for Respect? It was some WWII novel. On a totally different note, since this is my first posting, what's up with A&M? They don't seem to be too supportive of alternative artists. I have an old Soul Asylum album called Soul Asylum& the Horse they Rode In On, and it is one of my favorite albums of the last few years, but no one heard of it, so SA moved to Columbia and recorded a smash album. I'm half-kidding, but has anyone else noticed this? There was a feature about "chart rigging" and Robyn mentioned how he had done well in the US charts, but couldn't make an impact on the charts in the UK because of the way the system works. The Egyptians were shown playing but I don't have any more informations on this. There was no mention of Crash Test Dummies. sm [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Tue, 15 Mar 94 10:50:58 GMT From: J.W.Davies@reading.ac.uk (Jim Davies) To: cg1u+@andrew.cmu.edu Cc: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: sucking dummies crash test review Yea, even as Spring drags its wet kiss of fertility across the wintered shires, and the daffed heads of marching flowers decorate the war memorials of stony English towns, still there are last year's sweet wrappers and crisp packets of nonsense to litter the pavements and park benches of our lives: e.g., > My post was half serious. Thoughts on the Internet, Number 3. The second most important thing you can do when you're connected to lots of people is to shut up. Stupidity drags you in. Like religion or politics. Or pheromones. One sniff of difference and it's secondary sexual characteristics everywhere. Stop charging like a battery-powered rhino and say something friendly, preferably in a home counties accent. Phrases which might be useful on your journey: excuse me, I think you've dropped your hankerchief; is anyone sitting here?; does this train stop at Guildford?; would you mind putting that cigarette out?; fuck off and leave me alone. Anyway. Here I am, sitting here being stupid with you when I could be catching something. > "You know about TALCUM POWDER, I know about FLEAS -- bet you don't > know which of us is ME!" - Robyn fucking Hitchcock (am I cool now > guys??) Are you cool? Are they cool? What's cool? Is it sorted? Has it been ordered? Will it arrive before we leave? I think not. Robyn's middle name is not "fucking". Neither is mine. It might be nice though. Yeah. Jim F. Davies. I can see it. Yeah, honey, fucking's my middle name. Want me to show you a good time? Look, there's one over there. In fact, there was one last night: Robyn played a superb solo set at the Jazz Cafe. Acoustic, electric, vocals plus bananaccordion. I was transported. As if Australia had been Hampshire, and time travel was a thing of the past. Highlights: the "I something you" song, the electric one with Caroline backwards, the achingly beautiful one with the pretty guitar figures, the other new one which was all distinguishing features and no identity. Well, an identity yet to take form. And shape. But there's plenty of substance. And the encore: "Visions of Joanna". Oh, and the electric solo Higsons. love Jim [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: ROBYN TAPE TREE Date: Tue, 15 Mar 1994 07:44:07 EST From: Thomas Narten OK folks. I'm gonna setup and run a tree for the two robyn tapes of Gene's. *Please* stop sending him mail about them. It appears that both tapes fit on a single 100 minute cassette tape, so that is what everybody gets. No exceptions, please. The tape I'm getting will be 2nd generation (counting Gene's as 1st gen off of A&M's master). I'll transfer the tape to DAT to insure its preservation for future generations of 'yet unborn' fans. If you want a DAT clone, that can be arranged. I'll then make 6 or more dubs for branch leaders of the tree. Exact details will depend on how big the tree gets. I'll do my best to see that the depth of the tree stays small. I do not have the tapes yet, so it will take a week or so before things get rolling. PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE! In the meantime, I will set up the tree itself. Please answer the following questions and send your reply to me (not Gene!). Myers" Cc: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Just putting my .02 in on CTD... I don't really care much for the album. I like the single and I kind of like "God Shuffled His Feet," the title track. But, they need to work on varying the vocals. A whole album of that guy's voice can really get tired. That's the only reason I didn't buy the CD, besides the fact that most of the songs didn't really interest me. I really think that if they want to make a good album they should find some other members of the band to share lead vocals on some of the album; there needs to be some variety. [][][][][][][][][][] To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu From: mikem%uk.ac.brad.admin@bradford.ac.uk (Mike Mooney) Subject: Introduction Date: Wed, 16 Mar 94 09:31:33 gmt Hi everyone, this is an initial post to introduce myself and see who's there. My name's Mike Mooney, I'm 40 years old (gulp) and a systems analyst at the University of Bradford in the UK. My interest in RH goes back to the late 70's/early 80's when I discovered the Soft Boys and bored my friends to tears by raving about them all the time. I have just about a complete collection of SBs material on vinyl, but only sporadic forays into Robyn's solo stuff. I'm intrigued by his current popularity in the US - he's still virtually unheard of over here - prophets without honour in their own land, etc... Strangely enough I also caught onto REM very early when nobody had heard of them, and had the immense pleasure of discovering that they were Hitchcock fans when I met them on their 84 UK tour. Mike Mills went green with envy when I told them I'd previously seen the Soft Boys at the same venue (Leeds Warehouse) they were playing that night. Of course it's no surprise that RH has played with REM in recent years. (I have to say I'm less thrilled about REM's recent stuff too... maybe it's a sign of getting old. Oh well). Anyway, I could go on all day, but I've work to do. Hope to hear from y'all later... Mike "Where are the prawns?" [][][][][][][][] End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
