To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu (pleasure of the aching void) Date: Mon, 21 Feb 1994 10:28:35 +0100 (MET) Hello, anybody in the U.S. Is it true that _Queen Elvis_ is really out of print now? Does anyone know anyone who might know? Sadness. [][][][][][][][][][] Date: Mon, 21 Feb 1994 06:41:06 PDT From: "Nathaniel R. Leas (508) 538-2502" To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Subject: Re: QE oop? I'm assuming because you asked this of individuals in the US that you'd like to know if QE is still in print in the US, even though you're in Frankfurt. Correct? Anyway, to save me a long distance call, if there's anyone in the L.A. area who would call A&M to get an answer for this person, then the # used to be (213) 469-2411. It's probably (310) now. What the *hell* is an Anglepoise lamp? One of those desk lamps with articualted arms supporting it. They're sprung so that they (in theory) stay pointing wherever to place them (in practice they always end up pointing straight up). You have them in the States. There was a really funny computer animation which won prizes a year or two ago with animated anglepoises playing with balloons. You know the bit at the beginning of The Man With the Lightbulb Head video? Those are anglepoises. You know.... > 2. Where is East Grimstead? Is it a funny place, like, say, Cleveland? > A town about 10 miles north of where I am right now. It's "Grinstead", not "Grimstead", BTW. The reason Robyn mentions it is that LTTH was recorded at Unstable Sounds, Simon Kunath's house, which is in Offham on the road from Lewes (where I live, BTW) to E. Grinstead. I bought my car in East Grinstead. You can almost see it if you come in to land at Gatwick airport. It's a pretty dull town, all in all. It does however have not just the UK base of the Church of Scientology, but also the main UK temple of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints. These two facts may or may not be connected, according to taste. -&. Yes, it's a trade name for a variety of desk lamp which consists of three metal struts (arranged a bit like a pantograph) with the weight of the lamp balanced by four springs. You can position the lamp just about anywhere you want. They used to be very popular in the 60s, but the term "anglepoise" has become generic for any kind of flexible desk lamp. > > Why would anyone want to be an anglepoise lamp? Well, here goes: 1] I know there was a little bit of discussion about this awhile back, but I think it sorta faltered and died. What *is* Robyn saying in "Sometimes I Wish I Was A Pretty Girl"? What would he like to be able to do to himself in the shower? *Is* there a definitive answer? What about the version on _GLTHO_? I swear he's saying "wreck," but I have a friend who swears it's "rack," and another that says it's most definitely "rape." And is that even a word on _IODOT_? If you don't *know*, please share your IDEAS. This is a problem that I've debated upon many occasions, to no avail. It would be interesting to know if the majority opinion is with me or one of my friends. 2] Tours? What's the scoop? So much has been circulating -- rumors of tourdates, etc., but does anyone have anything concrete? How about the whole Soft Boys reunion thing? Where is Robyn right now? Where is he living? Last I knew it was in Washington, D.C. Am I way behind? 3] What is that song that concludes the _GLTHO_ Jettisoundz video? I quite like it. Is it available on audio media at all? Anyone? Anyone? 4] I've heard rumors of a collection of Robyn's short fiction being out there somewhere? Is this fact or fallacy? 5] WHAT IS MEANT BY ICE CREAM HANDS?!?!?! moretocome aaronaaronaaron **************************** @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ * C. A friend of mine saw the Soft Boys in Norwich, England and got a tape which Andy Metcalfe had compiled called "Give it to the Thoth Boys" containing various tracks recorded on tour. This may be old news but I just subscribed so I thought I'd do my part. If anyone wants more info on it, I can be reached at st1d@music.cc.uga.edu I've heard more than enough about anglepoise lamps and I think that delving too deeply into Robyn's lyrics for some concrete meaning is not only an exercise in frustration but also something which can only be reductive. Perhaps much of what he sings is meant to be vague, even to him. He does tend to change verses and improvise things in concert which might lead one to believe that he deliberately writes his songs to be changed or to be open-ended. That's all. [][][][][][][][][][] From: LJ Subject: ...while we're on the subject of NOTHING... To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Date: Mon, 21 Feb 1994 23:49:59 -0500 (EST) Okay, now forgive me if this sounds REALLY nutty, but I have had a peculiar feeling lately, and I had to see if anyone else out there has experienced this too. I realize that many of you are musicians (or otherwise?), so perhaps you can sympathize with this phenomenon. I am a painter, and for the last good year and a half, I have been able to listen to no other music except Mr. Robyn Hitchcock's when I work. I am not meaning to sound PSYCHO, but it's as though his music puts me in this hypnotic trance. I can just sit there, sort of swaying, all glassy-eyed and completely focused on my work. Any other music would be a distraction, but he is speaking to the part of my brain that I get out and use when I work. It's a very strange feeling, and almost a little scary sometimes when I realize how much of an influence he is having on my work (and my mind in general). Does this sound CRAZY? Should I seek a de-programmer? lj p.s., my S.O. posed an interesting question to me the other day: If Robyn had a cult, would you join it? Now there's some food for thought.
