I've only got a Deutsch-Englisch dictionary these days, and I'm not a gardener. (maybe "grow about me Apfelwein" would fit better with the first line...?) also, how about thisother line from the same song (The Live-In Years): even though it's dark and curly, hope I get it right this time ?????????????? thanks, susan From seven@dbis.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de Mon Jun 28 13:26:50 1993 Received: from milano.dbis.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de by wookumz.gnu.ai.mit.edu (5.65/4.0) with SMTP id ; Mon, 28 Jun 93 13:26:50 -0400 Received: by dbis.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de (Smail3.1.28.1 #9) id m0oAMzy-0001CDC; Mon, 28 Jun 93 19:28 METDST Message-Id: From: seven@dbis.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de (Susan Johanna Even) Subject: obtaining promo stuff To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu (pleasure of the aching void) Date: Mon, 28 Jun 93 19:28:10 METDST Mailer: Elm [revision: 70.30] ***Obtaining Promos*** This message is intended for newer fans on the list who are not familiar with promo-only releases. If you're one of these people, you are probably finding us all very annoying. In 1989, I didn't know what promo-only stuff was and then couldn't believe such things existed that I couldn't buy, let alone find anywhere. When I first saw Goldmine (a large, bi-monthly newsprint record collector's publication) I was pissed. I wanted to arrest anyone who dared to advertise this "Promotional Use Only/Not for Sale" kind of stuff. But sometimes, it is possible to obtain things for free. (if you're lucky) The most exciting way to find promo stuff is to drop in at your local radio station and ask. Very often they will offer to record the songs to tape for you. (Sometimes they'll even let you touch the disc...) Occassionally, your station may not play the style of music and give you the disc. (I got the Madonna of the Wasps promo this way... but that was in Kansas.) Sometimes, they may have received what you're looking for in both vinyl and cd formats, and give you the version they don't use. (Woj got many of his promos this way, but then he worked at the station...) If you're extremely lucky, and stop in shortly after they've received the item, they can ring up A&M (for example) and ask for an extra copy. (I obtained two copies of the Oceanside vinyl LP this way, Jim got the other.) BUT REMEMBER, this kind of luck usually only works ONCE! They'll remember you the next time, and you can easily feel (very) embarrassed. So the safer (but more expensive) alternative is to obtain a copy of Goldmine, hunt for what you want, and purchase something through the mail. This is especially useful for those not living in heavily populated areas. smiles, susan From 72241.366@CompuServe.COM Mon Jun 28 18:45:51 1993 Received: from ihb.compuserve.com by wookumz.gnu.ai.mit.edu (5.65/4.0) with SMTP id ; Mon, 28 Jun 93 17:41:43 -0400 Received: by ihb.compuserve.com (5.65/5.930129sam) id AA24430; Mon, 28 Jun 93 17:41:40 -0400 Date: 28 Jun 93 17:38:04 EDT From: Mark Hessman <72241.366@CompuServe.COM> To: Subject: Re: obtaining promo stuff Message-Id: <930628213804_72241.366_CHU102-1@CompuServe.COM> Another good thing to do is to visit a college town and stop by any or all of the used music stores in the vicinity. Sometimes college stations' unwanted promos will wind up there; sometimes these promos are direct from the label for whatever reason. Both promos of "normal" (commercially available) albums and special unreleased trax can be found that way. For those of you in & around the Boston area, the In Your Ear! chain (coupla stores in Boston, one in Providence) has a good selection of these kinds of things. I've noticed that when you buy a promo, they write it down on a special sheet -- keeping track of which ones have been sold. They don't do this with non-promo goodies. Anybody have an idea why? -- Mark
