What about TWJ put you off? If it's any explanation, I saw him talk about that song before performing it and he implied it was about three men in a bath together that he had seen in a men's muscle magazine. He made some comment about those kinds of magazines being popular before there were gay men's magazines. If you listen closely, he double-tracks the "x" - that is, RH sings "Sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl, os I could" and then two or three takes of him sing different words. "Stab" is one of them. I don't remember the others. Live, he sings "Whoop" for the x word. I think the thing we're missing is that the whole thing's based on Psycho. Thus "Is SIWIWAPG sexist?" becomes "Was Alfred Hitchcock sexist?". The idea of Robyn being both Janet Leigh and Norman Bates (at once) isn't really "sexist" -It's ever so "Robyn" though. Besides, I always wanted the x word to be "wet". It isn't. -&. Anyway, yes, the new promo goodie is an 8 by 10-inch signed, autographed lithograph of the _Respect_ album cover. Mine's number 45 of 350, and very nice it is. It came to my radio station with the _The Yip Song_ EP. Don't know why they targeted my radio station -- the announcers are generally too grunge-conscious or too afraid to have fun to play Robyn Hitchcock, and the Soft Boys reissues were ignored altogether. This is probably why Robyn didn't play New Orleans on his last tour and I didn't get a chance to interview and hang out with him :-( If they're trying to win my favor with goodies and promos, though, well more power to them! This doesn't mean, of course, that A&M isn't sending other promo goodies, though. Anybody? Sure, it's "objectifying," but I presumed he was referring to this tradition (I've never heard any Barry White, sorry), so that was part of the point. And yes, it makes a heck of a lot more sense live. Sadly (or not) the crowd was much much thinner than when I saw him there the last time (the Perspex tour). I say "or not" because the positive side of it not being that crowded is that 1) I could see, and 2) it means that next time around he may play smaller clubs instead (like Maxwell's in Hoboken, where he has always shined IMHO). Which is something I'm not so sure Robyn and the boys would mind at all. One thing I like about the "new" Ritz is that the sound there is impeccable, I have never seen a show there where the music wasn't crystal clear. (Even at Living Colour, I could hear vocals and instruments quite clearly.) It always amazes me how well the Egyptians perform using acoustic instruments. Driving Aloud opened the set and was performed on acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar, and (mostly) acoustic drums, yielding a sound much fuller and richer than I would have expected. (What I "expect" from such a configuration is the thin hollow shell of a sound like REM got when they did "Losing My Erection" on Unplugged.) I don't recall the whole set, but he did Oceanside, Clean Steve, Vegetation and Dimes, Glass (solo acoustic---wish he'd let Andy play bass on that, though, would have enhanced the performance greatly; it was dedicated to Cynthia---did anyone catch what he said when he dedicated it to her?), Globe of Frogs, the Yip Song, and closed with Kung Fu Fighting, which broke me up entirely. Does ANYONE know what he changed the words to? He made a number of subtle changes, one of which instigated uncontrollable laughter on my part: "There was dismal Billy Chin, and funky Tommy Chong." When he said Tommy Chong, I could not stop laughing for the remainder of the night. (He did say Tommy, didn't he?) Tommy Chong was Cheech Marin's par
