I dunno, I always though Ugly Nora was obnoxious but that Sandra's Having was satirical. Both, on the other hand, I've always found funny. Robyn's never been particularly kind to men in his songs either. I take those early songs as an angry guy spewing poetic venom, but writing some wonderful stuff nonetheless. >i'm not going to condemn him for things he wrote fifteen years ago. i'm >also a bit surprised that a&m went ahead and released "wafflehead" consi- >dering this age of guarded speech and whatnot. are we to applaud a label >for ignoring such social pressures or are we to condemn an artist for >seemingly being (gasp) sexist. > >is wafflehead sexist, for that matter? Maybe this is just me. Wafflehead is definitely SexuAL, but sexist, I'm not sure. I may be offbase, but it sounds to me like a song about going down on a woman which, being one of those things that chiefly pleases we women, to me suggests it's not really sexist. On the other hand, all these songs where women and sex are one and the same are troubling. I dunno, Robyn has always been crudely sexual (slipping you the midnight fish...), I never felt nearly as put off by his lyrics about women as I did by Ted Woody and Junior's stance toward gays. Helloo. I saw Robyn a few nights ago and "he rocked my ass." It was an amazing show and it lasted for about 100 minutes. I met him with my friend Craig before the show in the lavatorial facilities and we talked to him about his set list. He did not play anything new, like "Rabbit Train" but he did play "Kung Fu Fighting." I will type in a full set list when I remember to bring it with me to school. "Wafflehead" is a lot better live than it is on the record. He was dancing around as if he were possessed by the ghost of Morrisssey. it was, an entertaining evening not soon to be forgotten. His twelve string electric guitar that he plays is a "Set Zero." He told us that he liked to play it better than he liked his Rick. He told us after the show that the reason he got the rick was because it seemed the rockish type thing to do. The guitar belonged to the guitarist from "Hanoi Rocks" and Robyn bought it from him and has played it ever since. During "Kung Fu Fighting" he was karate chopping the air and jumping all around the stage as if he were Bruce Lee re-incarnated. Oh well I won't take up anymore space or time until I type up the set list. To: fegmaniax@gnu.ai.mit.edu Just had to put my 2 cents' worth in on the "sometimes I wish I was a pretty girl" lyric controversy--so far, we've heard of "wreck", "rape", and "whoop", but I could swear I've also heard him do "whack" and "oomph" as well. Not only is that particular song carved in jello, but it's very wiggly jello to boot... FYI: While I was living in Boston (1985-1988), I knew a couple named Paul and Mary, who broke up not too long before I left town at the end of '88. Apparently one of the main contributing factors in the breakup was a divergence of opinion as to whether or not the above song (and, by association, Robyn as well) was sexist--she said it was, and he said it wasn't. Granted, there *were* other factors involved as well, but this did seem to be a critical flashpoint for them...Just goes to show how seriously some of us take our music!
