Although I'm not too comfortable listing my faves since my CD collection just hit the 400 mark and the term "favorite" varies from day to day (hour to hour!). Having disclaimed myself, here are some artists that I have a Robyn-like fanatacism for: Butthole Surfers Dinosaur, Jr. Replacements (Except the last two CD's) Zappa Violent Femmes New(er) music I've liked: Teenage Fanclub Sister Double Happiness Ween Matthew Sweet Buffalo Tom Chris Mars Enough already... Might I suggest people talking about bands/artists that are not *that* well known? Everyone and their dog knows about REM. They either like them or they don't but everone has heard of them. > it's easy to dee why-- peter buck plays guitar on lots of robyn albums, and > micheal stipe appeared on perspex island (she doesn't exist anymore). rem > covered "arms of love" and released it as a b-side before respect came out. > musically, the two groups are fairly compatible. but you probably already know > this. as far as quirky lyrics go, i am big on they might be giants. and Again, TMBG are pretty popular now. > another artist that i recommend to the world is Jonathan Richman. he's been > around for about 15 years, he and his band the modern lovers have about 15 > albumsout. it's hard stuff to find but very fun. cheerful music, full of > reminiscence of childhood. jonathan says he is influenced by the velvet > undrground, but you don't notice it. Now Jonathan R. has put out some great stuff! He's not too well known but definitely a good candiate for RH fan overlap. Check out his recent solo stuff "Having a party with Jonathan Richman" and "Jonathan Richman goes Country" both on Rounder Records. Check him out in concert if you get the chance. You wont be dissapointed! Some of my suggestions... Captain Sensible (still of the Damned). RH and the Captain have done some work together in the past. "It's hard to belive I'm not" a Captain Song with lyrics by Robyn. Also, there is a band called the "Brotherhood of Lizards". It seems that there is this strange triangle between Captain/Robyn and the Lizards. Dont know exactly. If anyone has info on this please post it! I have been looking for Lizards stuff but cant find any. Then there is the Monks of Doom and all their ancestral groups/artists. I think much of their stuff would appeal to RH fans. enough Rob Sutton KUGS-FM Bellingham, WA [] [] [][] [][] [] [][] [][] [] [] Date: Tue, 13 Apr 93 14:26:29 PDT From: "John M. Relph" Subject: Re: Captain Sensible Yes, Captain Sensible worked with Robyn Hitchcock for a couple of albums, yielding some GREAT songs like "Brenda", "Croydon" (a particular fave), "Stop the World", "I'm A Spider" (Robyn did the artwork on the single sleeve), "Secrets", and of course the aforementioned "It's Hard to Believe I'm Not". "Brenda" and "Croydon" have some particularly wonderful lyrics. Martin Newell (of Brotherhood of Lizards) and the Captain have been working together for a couple of years, yielding one album and some singles. The Brotherhood of Lizards (mostly Newell, a gardener by trade) have a few records out, including a CD which should be easily obtained in the USA. More British pop music, less fantastical than Robyn but having some of the same elements. As far as I know, Martin Newell and Robyn have not worked together. The Captain is the bridge. (Where's the bridge?) Nelson, late of Brotherhood of Lizards, is now working with New Model Army. Quite a change. -- John [] [] [][] [][] [] [][] [][] [] [] Date: 13 Apr 93 19:30 GMT From: TCLARK@AppleLink.Apple.COM (Clark, Thomas) Subject: Re: other fave bands >favorite band of all time is deffinitely R.E.M. and i would guess that there >... >musically, the two groups are fairly compatible. but you probably already >... That reminds me of a joke I heard sometime around 1986: Q: How many members of R.E.M does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Two. One to change the lightbulb and one to put on the Robyn Hitchcock album. Sex & Fish, Tom [] [] [][] [][] [] [][] [][] [] [] Archives can be found on ftp.uwp.edu:/pub/music/lists/fegmaniax.
