I figured someone else would've posted by now, sheesh! Well... On the ride up, we were all talking about what we expected. We didn't know if Julie'd started chemotherapy yet or not, but we expected that she would be in a seriously weakened state given the talk leading up to the show, about how she wasn't coming until right before, and she'd be leaving right after, etc. When we saw the stage, it was pretty much set up like we expected, with a stool in Julie's spot. We all were kind of expecting Julie to come out looking frail and tired, sit on the stool and sing backup all night. When they walked out, though, she looked great. Walking strongly, good healthy glow to her face, but we still didn't know what we were going to hear. They immediately started up with "Number Six Driver," and I can't speak for the rest of the group, but I was in awe. The whole show was packed with songs like this, where Julie really belts out the lyrics and blows the crowd away. She was as energetic as always, holding the high notes longer than ever, and I think even impressing the rest of the band quite a bit. We didn't hear as many Robbie- and Mike-led songs, either. I think Julie was definitely trying to make a point, like, yeah, I'm sick, but I'm still Julie Murphy Wells! When Mike polled the audience (which was a full house except for maybe six or seven empty seats in the very back row), we found out that half or more of the audience were first-timers. Shelly was crazy busy at the merch table all night. The girl sitting behind me bought three CDs and two T-shirts to mark her first EFO experience. A guy actually asked Shelly, seeing the sheet music for "Great Day," "Hey Little Man," and "Walk Humbly, Son," if they had the sheet music to "Cowboy." Heh. Joe Murphy led us all in the Joe during "Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown," and the audience went wild for him, even though half of them had never heard of the Joe. All in all, it was a great night, well worth the two tickets I got on my drive up there (five minutes away from Stuart's house, I get pulled for doing 80 in a 55, but luckily only ticketed for dead inspection and registration...) and having to endure vegetarian horror at the crab-smashing dinner. And happy birthday to Kerry Frey:) Peace, Meg - --- rhiannon giles wrote: > Any reports from the show? Thanks, Jen ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Oct 2005 19:36:07 -0400 From: Laura Hudson Subject: Re: so...? I'm with Meg on all counts. It was a really amazing and high-energy show, and well worth the long drive. Julie and the rest of the band are always impressive, but I was really blown away. It seemed very much like Julie's night, and she ran with it. Her version of "The Water is Wide" was so beautiful that I almost couldn't breathe. It was really wonderful to meet everyone at the Great Crab Massacre - Drop a line if you're headed up this way!
