Some non-EFO related advice please Hi all, Welcome back from FR. We so wanted to go, but our daughter Ella is just 4 weeks today, and she didnt pass the breast feeding outside test. (We tried her in a friends backyard a few days before we would have left.) We were worried she wouldnt eat and would dehydrate. Good reason not to go, but Im still bumming badly. We have only missed going when my husbands father died four years ago. (BTW, for all sorts of pictures and information, Ella has her own website: www.eachflowersname.net/eleanor :) ) Obviously with EFO living in VA and starting out there, there must be a lot of Virginians on the list. I was hoping I could ask for your help. Weve been living in Massachusetts for the past 8 years while my husband has been working on his PhD at MIT (computer science). Hes looking to finish up in the next year (yay!) and we are starting to look into what comes next. One of his best friends works for a company in Herndon, VA, and Ben is thinking about following him there. I know nothing about life in Virginia and Im totally overwhelmed about getting started with the research. (Lack of sleep can not be helping.) So, I guess I need help with two different threads: Can we find the type of life we are looking for there, and if so what towns should we start looking into? There are some things that really make our life here wonderful, and while I recognize that life would be different, I want many of those things to continue. One of the things that makes Boston so great is that while you can find many of the amenities of city life (music, museums, theatre, etc.), its really easy to get out to undeveloped natural wonderlands. We are really into the outdoors. The life things that we are looking for include good access to wooded hiking trails (I usually hike for 1-2 hours, 3-5 days a week here in MA. Im used to being able to get out into the woods only driving for 20 minutes. Trails dont need to be more than a few miles long, but they need to be off leash for dogs and feel like you are out in the middle of nowhere if you know what I mean), good lake/pond swimming (think Walden pond if youve ever been there, but even better if dogs are allowed), places to canoe/sail a small Sunfish sized sailboat, good dog parks, and good access to folk music (duh!). The things we are looking for in a town are really top notch public schools, a decent sized Jewish population (were not particularly observant, but access to a nice, warm, granola synagogue and to the culture is important), activities for children, and a liberal/open minded attitude (think Cambridge :) ). Friendly neighbors, at least half acre lots, and good farm stores are a bonus. :) I know, I know. We dont ask for much. The thing is, I can get what I want here in Boston, and Im not eager to accept less. Things I dont care about: I dont shop. I accept traffic and high housing costs as unavoidable. So, am living in a dream world? Might VA have what I am looking for? And if so, where should I start my research? Thanks so much for indulging my long non-EFO post!!!! Please respond off list so at least I wont continue to interrupt. Joy Elyse Tired of spam? Yahoo! Has anyone ever actually cheered? I mean, it's almost obvious when you know the song that you're really not supposed to cheer, but... theoretically, I'm not supposed to be allowed near tennis balls *or* wild penguins, and we all know how hard *that* is to avoid, am I right? ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V8 #87 ****************************
