Camp Edhead gets a little bigger each year under the sure and steady hand of Queen Shelly (doing another great job of organizing), and there seems to be more music every year as well. It was our 3rd FRFF, and even though I was hobbling around in a leg cast (broken toe and sprained ankle), I think I had the most fun this year. We were visiting Jill's family in Massachusetts and I made it over on Thursday, Jill on Friday. Thursday started nicely, reading and drinking beer in the lobby, having steaks and martinis, and discovering the Arrogant Worms, a comedy trio out of Canada, similar to Da Vinci's Notebook. Apparently others were up late on Wednesday, and no one was up late Thursday. Friday brought workshops with Crooked Still, Paul & Storm, Arrogant Worms, Tracy Grammer and Jim's Big Ego on the mainstage as part of the Emerging Artist Showcase. As last year, Friday afternoon brought storms, but luckily only about 40 minutes rather than the couple hours we endured the year before. Friday night was Canexican night, with Mexican food and margaritas (not sure if the planned Canadian bacon quesadillas ever made an appearance). Julie made an appearance, and Paul & Storm stopped by. Saturday was the big day, starting off with several nice workshops, especially My Back Pages featuring Crooked Still (a great find from last year) and Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams (a great find this year). Dar Williams had car trouble so there were only 2 places we wanted to be at 3:30 - we chose Paul & Storm (with GrooveLily backing them up) over Rushad from Crooked Still. I like Paul & Storm a lot, but they were even better with a backing band. Eddie from Ohio finally showed up for The Blues is Still the News (with Alastair Moock and Redbird) doing "Alone", "29 Ways", "Blue Jeans", and were joined by everyone for "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright". Eddie wasn't there, but they didn't mention why. Later on the mainstage, we caught Tracy Grammer, skipped Lowen & Navarro to get dinner, then watched Crooked Still and Dar Williams (and watched the hill light up during "Iowa"). When efo came out, it was still only the three of them, and they told us Eddie was in North Carolina dealing with a family issue that'd come up 48 hours earlier. They said he'd insisted they go instead of cancel, and asked us to keep him in our prayers. I don't have the setlist, but know they played "Number 6 Driver", "And The Rain Crashed Down", "Minnesota 1945", and "Fly". They were joined onstage at various points by guests Paul & Storm, We're About Nine, Annie Wenz, and members of Railroad Earth. They finished with "Candido & America", and the Edheads down front had neon 'O's for the chorus. After their set, I headed up to the Budgiedome to see Groovelily and Jim Infantino (from Jim's Big Ego). Jeremy and Jay showed up a little later (with evil margarita leftovers) and mentioned Julie, Robbie and Mike had showed up in camp after I left. As we headed down the hill after Jim finished, we heard voices raised in song, and tried to decide which camp it was coming from. I asked Jeremy if Mike was still there when he left - when he answered yes, I said it was our camp. Sure enough, it was Mike Clem's Traveling Revue. Apparently he had left for a while but returned with a couple of old school friends on guitar (I believe it was Mark, Randy and Rowan). He was out in the middle of the street with Paul & Storm and about 20 other people (including Stuart on guitar). Mike was leading the proceedings, starting a number of cover songs (by the Monkees, CCR, Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Grateful Dead, etc.) and everyone would join in. A lot of fun, but it was after 4 by the time they packed it in. After catching Dar Williams in a workshop covering Rachel Bissex's songs, we stayed to see efo at the Gospel Wake Up Call. When they started, they had Eddie on the phone, and had the crowd chant for him. A nice set, including "Great Day" and "Operator" (of course). We were soon on our way onto the oversaturated highways home to Virginia, but looking forward to next year (apparently the farm the festival is held on will be sold soon, and they're looking for new locations).
