For instance, to play the Triad lately, EFO had been playing at WFU's auditorium, but I guess the university/students didn't want to book them there, and instead, they played ziggy's a while back. They hadn't been in ziggy's since Julie was pregnant last. Thus, a while. It was a noisy talky crowd, but better than some. Sometimes "chatty" clubs change, like Cat's Cradle. I've now seen EFO play there, David Wilcox, and a solo Jay Clifford [ of Jump Little Children ]... Where I once had a loud, chatty crowd, bring in the chairs, make people sit down, and it's a new world. Perhaps the 9:30 will change. I caught my first show there a couple of New Years' ago for Everything, and it was a loud chatty crowd, but that's a NYE crowd anyway. Perhaps they're giving the venue another shot with some conditions... - -- "Happiness is the exercise of vital powers along lines of excellence, in a life offering them scope."-Aristotle "The real technology behind all our other technology - is language."-Norman Fischer "Rest yourself beneath the strength of strings no voice can hope to hum" - Bob Dylan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 14:59:33 -0400 From: Kerry Frey Subject: 9:30 show >> The other thing from Herndon they announced was their first ever show >> at the 9:30 club September 17th. > *wuggawuggawugga* come again? what the heck is the thought process there? We asked Bob about it later, and he said that the 9:30 club had asked them to play, simple as that. He said they'd discussed a seated show, but I don't think it'll happen. I also see Dar Williams is playing there 10/1, with Girlyman opening. > a couple of years ago, i asked why they were playing less and less at > clubs and more at theater-type venues. i can't remember who i was > asking this (it was either julie or robbie) but the reply was that they > preferred to play to a crowd that was mellow and actually listening-- > not brawling in the back, or screaming drink orders/requests for "free > bird", etc. If the ticket price is high enough (I'm guessing in the same range as the Birchmere), you won't get that as much. One thing I don't see as much is dancing at their shows, especially if they do "Eddie's Concubine" -> "Tommy The Canexican". No seats would encourage that (I recall the show they did in 2003 at the House Of Blues in New Orleans where the first set everyone sat on the floor, and the second set people danced - led by the "mechanical bull rider" and Baldy representin' - but that's another story). And there's a difference between the 9:30 and just an average club with a cover charge. Of course I'm biased - I like the 9:30, smoke and all (going to see Billy Corgan there tonight). But if you don't like the idea of them there, you'll have to wait until January when they're doing another 3 night stand at the Birchmere. Out here in Seattle, until last November, they hadn't played in town since 1999, and I think they played at a small (but very cool) place called the Tractor Tavern. Last November, and again early last month, they played downtown at the Triple Door, a posh dinner-theatre style place that brings in a wide variety of musical acts. They've packed the place both times, and the reception has been very good, including a number of kids (our two, 5 and 7, have been in the front row for both shows, and there's a band connection, too: some of Mike's family lives in the Puget Sound area and they come out to see him, too). Sure, they could play in smaller venues, but I think they're finding that they CAN play the bigger ones, and be successful at it, too.
