WARNING: LONG After having seen EFO a number times in upstate NY and FRFF, and recently in fairly large venues (400?) in Rochester and Syracuse, seeing them perform for only 7 people (yes seven) in Hamilton was a shock. They've made the joke before about any show where the audience outnumbers the band is a successful one, but this time it was close. My sister, who's seen them at Falcon Ridge a few years ago, and I left Buffalo around 5:30. After heading to the bank, the duty free, and passing the border, we finally got into Canada around 6:10. We arrived in Hamilton about an hour later. We found parking in the back lot of the staircase cafe and headed inside. Inside, they have both a cafe and a theater. The cafe served both coffee and beer. The band appeared to be finishing dinner as we walked in. When we were directed to the counter to get tickets, we were surprised to get tickets # 4 and 5. I hoped this wasn't a sign that the crowd was going to be light, but had my suspicions. Bob came and talked to us a short while later, and I introduced him to my sister. We talked a little bit about the Toronto show (about 30 in attendance,) he let us know it was his 10th anniversary that day (congrats!) and a short while later, he let us into the theater. The stage was at ground level, and there was auditorium style seating going up about 10 rows. There was a very small PA, using a powered mixer that was set in front of Robbie. Eddie was using his djembe, 2 cymbals, and a kick drum, none of which were mic'd. Bob had said the owner of the theater wanted them to do a completely acoustic set. I set my mic stand up in the center of the second row, and proceeded to get my recording gear in place. I also talked to Kate, who came down from Barrie, Ontario, and Rick who also came from Buffalo. At some point, 3 other ladies from Hamilton and Toronto entered the room and sat down. Just when I got all my gear set up, EFO entered the room. Set list Good At That Stay And the Rain Crashed Down Minnesota 1945 It's All Right (The Impressions cover) (off mic) This is Me Fifty Pounds Quick The Three Fine Daughters of Farmer Brown Down to the River If I Had a Boat From Dacca Adios, Lorena Stupid American The Old Dominion encore: O, Canada (off mic) The set list was a good one, as 5 of the 7 had never seen Eddie from Ohio before, and between them, there was only 1 legally purchased cd. When the show was over, I think everyone had at least one new piece of EFO merch (I got a hooded sweatshirt, and I bought my sister one of the baseball Ts.) During the show, after realizing that they had mostly newcomers, Robbie asked why they came. The girl from Barrie explained how she had downloaded a mp3 years ago (Mike: "Security!"), and recently found their website and bought This is Me. Rick had a copied version of Fishbowl (Robbie: "That burning stuff is highly illegal"), that he sat on a few weeks after getting it, and could only listen to tracks 1-5 (Robbie: "You know, we can replace those for you".) The three ladies from Hamilton/Toronto had came because the writeup on the staircase cafe sounded too good to miss (http://www.staircase.org/calendarix/calendar.php# click on Eddie from Ohio) Other notes of interest: There's a new verse in Old Dominion which they debuted in Hamilton. "The Colonials down in Jamestown still wear three cornered hats, and in the land near Washington they're rooting for the Nats (Fight for ole D.C... Play Ball!)" And finally the bad news. As I'm still experimenting with a new recorder the recording didn't come out that great, as it's plagued by an annoying hum through out the whole show. I'll still probably upload it to archive.org, but I'll probably work with it for a while to see if I can make it any better.
