If you think your friend would be hooked by an energetic song, then Old Dominion would be my first choice. For slow and melodic, I would recommend Baltimore. I saw 'em in a concert thing for the first time at FRFF '00 too! But I saw 'em for the *first* first time in January 1994. I bought the CD that day at the concert, and at home I quickly added "Tom Burleigh," "Great Day," & "Monotony" (and basically all the others!) to my list... but the thing that continues to impress me so much about the band is their incredible vocalizing in the 2 /a capella/ songs on that CD, "Great Day" and "Hey Little Man". The fact that they can do those wonderful close harmonies live / in concert is doubly amazing, so I'd go with them, myself, if your friend has /any /inclination toward that kind of music. Their wry and wonderful humor in "Tom Burleigh," "Tommy the Canexican," "Let's Get Mesolithic," "1000 Sarahs," & "Monotony," /et al., /might be another angle to go with... (If your friend likes They Might Be Giants or Frank Zappa, "Tommy the Canexican" and "Let's Get Mesolithic," reminded me of them, humor-wise and musical agility-wise, which is what came to mind the first time I saw EFO...) One thing for sure, though, you surely can't go wrong with "Old Dominion," by any means! [I have a friend who is the lead singer for a Virginia-based bluegrass band named "Front Range" and I'm trying to get them to listen to it and record it if possible... It should be the official Virginia state song!] Some of the references might be lost on a Californian, as you said, but maybe slipping that kind of info slyly into conversation beforehand might take care of that... (??) ;o) Good luck! Let us know what your choice ends up being!
