Scales" Subject: Ashland show 12/13 Well, I didn't think anything could possibly top the skull at the Staunton show on Thursday night. But who would have guessed that Ashland Coffee & Tea would have a stuffed Armadillo in a cowboy outfit (complete with black hat and shiny pistols). Much merriment ensued--Julie noted that with its little arms outstretched it looked like a zombie. The armadillo was on top of a piano on Mike's side of the stage, and as Mike introduced one of his new songs during the second set, Robbie took the armadillo and placed it out of sight behind him; when Mike looked at him quizzically, Robbie replied, "It was freaking me out." The armadillo made a triumphant return during the new song "Cowboy" (when you've got an armadillo dressed like a cowboy, how can you not work it into the number?); Robbie even shared his microphone with the strange little critter. This is one of the best shows I've seen them do this year. Ashland is a fairly intimate venue, not much larger than Jammin Java, and it was packed with faithful Edheads (including about ten cruisers). The band did two encores, and remarked throughout the evening what a wonderful time they were having. Hopefully, this will become a regular venue for them. I didn't do a setlist, but the new songs they performed were "This Is Me", "Alone", "Lady Freedom", "Traffic/Cowboy", and "Walk Humbly Son". I was sorry not to hear "Fly", "Independence, Indiana", or "Baltimore", which just makes me all the more eager for their new album. Maybe we'll hear them at Robbie's solo show at the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville this Friday night. I'm purely guessing here, but I'd put a CD release somewhere around August thru October. (But I estimate conservatively, so it certainly could be sooner.) How much time do these things take? IIRC, Three Rooms was "in the can" as of late summer '02 (I remember talking with a band member about it) and scheduled for release early the next year (i.e. '03). More dimly, I remember that Fishbowl was all but done as of their California tour (mid-fall); it was released the following April. Extrapolating from these examples that ~6 months are needed for a CD production after the recording phase, that implies a fall release. Persons with more of a clue are welcome to jump in here. And what should they call it? - --nicole twn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 19:42:28 -0500 From: "John J.
