Too quiet. So, something new. One of the things they do on the cruise is they let you vote for three songs you want them to play, then tally it up and play the winners (maybe we can introduce a recall this year). I've got a poll up, with the new songs, all the songs off the CDs, and a number of covers. Please vote (but only once, I'm watching IPs) - I'd like to see how close this comes to the cruise: http://www.hemisphire.com/efo/poll/poll.php?action=showpoll&pollid=1 Kerry - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ya know Moe, my mom once said something that really stuck with me. Y'know, there's a topic that pops up on every band-related forum I've been on: What If Fans Picked The Setlist? The EFO cruise, IMHO, turns out to be an excellent case study. It turns out that everyone has their pet favorites, so the distribution of votes ends up being very broad and shallow. No clear "fan favorites" emerge. Last cruise, the top vote-getter was "#6 Driver", with something like ten votes. Out of 114 people. Two or three votes was enough to get a song played. You basically had to hope that someone else also picked your songs--I was 1 for 3 with my choices [1], and so was Jess. So far, it looks like that pattern is being repeated in Kerry's poll: one or two songs have a couple of votes, and a huge field of songs have one vote apiece. No point to this, I just think it's an interesting answer to a question that fan fora love to speculate upon. - --nicole twn [1] #6 Driver, Porchlight, Long Walk Home ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 14:27:48 EDT From: YourPalCM@aol.com Subject: Re: Song poll Does anyone remember my EdHead list poll from about a year ago? Everyone submitted a list of their top TWENTY-FIVE songs and the rankings were weighted so that every #1 song got 25 points, every #2 ranked song got 24 points, etc. A lot of people participated and although there was a wide rang of "favorites" as you noted, it did clear up what the general consensus was as far as fan/list favorites. I'm at work right now. When I got home, I'll send the results to you guys again, for those who might not have had a chance to participate the first time around. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 11:36:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Mark Bradbourne Subject: Re: Song poll I think moments like this just solidify how great a band (in this case EFO) is... Anytime, any cross-section of fans have completely different 'favorite' songs proves the quaility of song writing that is contained within the band. For those of you who may remember the Crash Test Dummies, they use to have a yearly favorite song poll on their website, but discontinued it after 'Afternoons and Coffee Spoons' won repeatedly. I'm completely rambling at this point... but I never post anything anyway. - -Mark "professional lurker" ===== Mark R. "Anytime, any cross-section of fans have completely different 'favorite' songs proves the quaility of song writing that is contained within the band." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I agree, Mark, and in fact, I just sent a similar comment to "YourPalCM@aol.com" a minute ago! "It was so hard to vote for just 3, but I could ~probably~ do 25.... I guess the absolute favorites of the individuals in this fanbase end up being so broad and shallow becuase EFO are such good songwriters!" As a sometime-songwriter myself, I am thoroughly and totally envious and entertained by the songs I've heard from EFO! I actually own only 3 EFOCD's so far (Quick, Fishbowl, & Big Noise), but from that small sampling I feel, IMCSO (in my completely subjective opinion) that their songwriting, and maybe too their production ability and arrangements, have matured and blossomed fully with Quick, it being one of those albums for me that I wouldn't change a single thing on. [If Julie's two a capella offerings Hey Little Man and Great Day (they are both hers, right? - -- I'm going solely from memory here) are her first (I didn't notice other by-lines for her on the other two discs but am curious to know if I am correct) then the group is really on to something good with her writing, as they're two fantastic songs with amazing treatments/arrangements!] Add to that the range of attitudes they span so artfully and so well, from humor (wry, goofy, sardonic, and ironic) to intimacy and deep-feeling insight, and I can't point to anyone better!
