Hey fellow edheads, If any of you have been to the edheads MP3 site lately, you may have noticed that message that we (actually Ofer Inbar) are now being charged for network traffic. In an effort to keep the edheads site alive I am looking for people that are willing to donate web/ftp space to store some (or all) of the mp3 files (Currently we have about 4 Gigs of MP3's on the site). The homepage will still remain in the same place, just some of the directories will point to other locations (so the change should be transparent to most users). Let me know if you have some space (and a constant T1 connection or greater) and are willing to help out to keep live EFO MP3's available. You will of course get proper recognition on the site (and if the web space comes from part of a business server, we can probably even link to the business). Seth btw, If we can't farm out some of the network traffic to other sites, Ofer may have to limit access to the MP3 site or even take it down. Please do not take this to mean you should go there now and download all the songs you can get your hands on. That will only make the problem worse and guarantee that the site goes down quickly. - ------------------------------------ Seth Hornstein seth@astro.ucla.edu http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~seth UCLA Department of Physics & Astronomy __o _o /\o_ _ \<,_ //\_ ^^^^^^^^ (_)/ (_) _/\ / ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2003 21:58:54 -0500 From: Dave Read Subject: Re: MP3 site needs support! Seth- How much traffic are we talking about? I have tons of available space on my web server at work -- probably 10 or 20 GB. I can check on the actual available space when I get to work tomorrow. We also have a full-time T1 and super stable servers, and since we pay for a full-time T1 there's no total bandwidth limit on our service. The only issue that worries me is traffic. During the day, our web servers run several live applications for our clients. No one will care if I serve EFO tunes from the server -- unless someone ties up our T1 during the day and the paying clients can't get in. :( Off hours, "blast away." The internet lines sit idle and so do the servers. I will talk with our systems guys tomorrow to ask if there's a way to throttle the bandwidth from my site during the day. I'd bet $$ that this is possible. If it is, sign me up for serving up some MP3s for you. After I check the available space on the www.daveread.com server, I'll tell you how much I can handle.
