There is an open area that everyone waits in (with a bar, chairs, tables, etc.) and when they are ready to seat, they call out the numbers one at a time for people to go get their seats in the dining/concert hall. - --- Stuart Jewell wrote: > The Birchmere is general admission. As far as I remember it's a free for all once they open the doors to the seating area. And whatever you do, eat dinner before you get to the venue - the food there is atrocious and extremely overpriced. That said, it is a great place to watch a show. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 May 2003 07:03:51 -0400 From: Ellen Buckley Subject: Re: Birchmere questions novamacs@juno.com wrote: > > Maybe things have changed since the last time I was at the Birchmere, but I don't remember > ever getting a number and being called to go take a seat. As far as I remember it's a free > for all once they open the doors to the seating area. or perhaps you don't arrive early enough to see it. they don't do this for every single show, i don't think, but for popular ones like EFO, the crowd waiting before doors are opened will be issued numbers (1 number per party, not per person), and once doors are opened, the numbers are called one by one. once the early crowd is in, then it's simply a matter of walking up to the door and being let in. if you want to be right up front, then it pays to get there early. if you don't particularly care whether the band can see you as well as you can see them, then don't worry about it. the birchmere seats about 800, if memory serves. > And whatever you do, eat dinner before you get to the venue - the food there is atrocious > and extremely overpriced. That said, it is a great place to watch a show. *lots* of people would disagree with you on the atrocious part. i do think it's a bit pricey for what it is (fancy sandwiches, salads and pizza, soup and chili, big appetizers, etc),but it's pretty good. i always want to try somewhere else because i'm vegetarian and they only have 2 or 3 things that are veg, but i never get my sh*t together enough to find another place nearby and meet my friends there, so we usually default to the b'mere for dinner. ;) peace, ellen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 May 2003 13:22:54 +0000 From: "jen studt" Subject: Re: Birchmere questions Have you been to the new Birchmere? The food is much improved, there's a much greater variety, poboyand the seating is very organized. To be specific - the doors open at 5:00 PM, that's when they start to hand out numbers. For popular shows there's usually a line outside a bit prior to 5:00. Then from 5:00 - 6:00 you stay in the lobby area where there's a big bar, a great record store, a bunch of pool tables etc. At 6:00 PM they begin to call the numbers. After the numbers are all called, then latecomers and such are allowed in. Tables range from 4 tops to like 12 tops, and it's true, there isn't really a bad seat in the house, especially sound wise. So unless you like eating dinner at 4:00 in the afternoon, I suggest going early, getting a great seat, having some dinner and drinks and enjoying the show. But I second all those who said there's not a bad seat in the house, and I definitely agree that the record store is a must visit. I actually like just about everything about the place (and yes, this is the "new" Birchmere, where I've been numerous times), but I stand by what I said about the food. I've tried it on several occasions, for the reasons people have noted (not many other options in the area, etc.), but I've never had anything decent there. No matter what I've gotten it's tended to be dry, flavorless, and not as much as I felt I paid for. But, all in all, it's a small gripe about a great place. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 13:42:14 -0400 From: "Joanne Nanna" Subject: Re:Birchmere The Birchmere is actually one of my favorite places to hear live music. The sound is great, the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed, there isn't a bad seat in the house, and most of my favorites appear there. I saw EFO there last year, and a wonderful time was had by all. Most of the questions have been answered pretty accurately, except for the capacity. Capacity is 550, with 500 called a sellout. The last 50 tickets are held back for band comps, media, industry people, etc. If these aren't used, they're usually released the night of the show, but I wouldn't count on this. Last year's EFO shows sold out several weeks early, so don't wait too long to buy tickets. If you can get to the box office, you save about $5 per ticket over phone and online TM sales. The number system is used for every show, and it works out really well. No mad dash for the best seats. or jockeying for position during the show like in standing venues. The drawback to this is the doors opening at 5PM, which is too early for a lot of people. If you don't have someone in your party who can get there early and hold a spot in line, you can often luck out when you arrive later, and find an odd seat or two at one of the front tables. Actually, you can go there without a ticket, hang out in the lounge area outside the music hall, have food and drinks, and hear the music. The sound is carried on a PA system there, and the show can be seen on several video screens. As for the food, I'll agree it's not the greatest, but if you stick to things like the salads and pizzas, you do okay. The appetizers are also pretty good, and the selection of draught beers is very good. So, maybe I'll see a few of you there in Nov. I'll be at the Saturday show.
