I guess its a bit of a raw nerve song if you have ever struggled with mental illness or know some one who has. You immediately take it as the base meaning I think the, "brush it under the rug one day it will all go away" line is most peoples feeling on mental illness, well most people that aren't mentally ill anyway. NOW INTERRUPTING THE MEANING OF SONGS IS A RISKY BUSINESS what it may mean to one person and what the song writer had in mind can often be at total opposite ends of the spectrum. Take Fly..when I heard it I thought what a cool upbeat song then I chatted with Robbie at the Lancaster coffee house show and "Fly" as he described it was on the dark side. A kid in a bad situation wanting to escape. when I 1st heard the song I immediately thought of a happy little super hero wannabe. but after talking with Robbie about the song after the show I saw the "darkness" REALLY listen to it if you happen to have a copy of it. Its been a few months since I heard it but it haunts me in an odd way "we are a family of 3, there's my mom dad and me, and I'm the only one who's quiet, wish they'd both shut up and try it" I had posed this question to a fellow lister ..Is Observation a Robbie song? Fly reminds me of Observation. I've just started listening to threerooms. I never listened to this song - observation - before. Anyone want to share their take on it's meaning? Also, is there a way to search the archives of this list? It seems like this may have already been talked about... I'll bite - I think this is an easy one. My take on it is this: Observation is a tragic 'story song' - tells the tale of someone with a mental illness. Said person is constantly under protective 'observation', hence title. Has trouble in school. Gets arrested for stealing beets, and doesn't know why. Receives electroshock therapy (which almost always causes memory loss in real life). Gets moved to a state-run farm. Falls asleep while smoking in bed, dies of smoke inhalation. Becomes angel, decides that maybe this is for the best, and will keep family left behind under protective observaton. Now, if someone can explain to me what "Loitering in the Lobby" is about... ? It's very catchy, but I've never had much of a clue what it's really about. - -- "The blues are multicolored." -- Dave Lambert Daniel Risacher magnus@alum.mit.edu ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 09:52:47 -0500 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: Re: observation - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel Risacher" > Now, if someone can explain to me what "Loitering in the Lobby" is > about... ? Especially the tobacco and gun lobbyists as represented by the Scarecrow (straw man) and Tin Man (metal man) I've never quite figured out who the cowardly lion represents. Cushy jobs given to family members, etc. One of their more political songs. Jim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 10:13:13 -0500 From: "Patrick L.
