There was a switch in service for the edhead list, and was down for a few days, but should now be running without incident. It's OK to make light use of Flash, but to make the site navigable only through Flash -- or worse, to make all content on the site Flash-based, is a huge mistake. Why? Because 99% of all Flash on the web is intrusive advertising that can't be turned off. As a result, a large and growing number of people (including myself) either refuse to have Flash on their machines or turn off ActiveX controls in order to avoid all the advertising. We won't even get into the issue of visitors who don't have Flash available for their systems... Regardless, the new web site does look good (after I re-enabled Flash). The extra new content is really great. D ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 11:09:02 -0500 From: Scott Stanard Subject: Re: edhead list I agree... I am not online at home, and while the system at work here is quite decent and fast, if they don't have Flash (and they don't), or any other item (like RealAudio) that requires a Plug-In, the network does not allow any downloading like that, making it impossible. I bet the new site's really cool -- I just wish I could see it... I've got to do further testing, but even though I have Flash on my Linux system, I don't think it's the proper version to view the new EFO website, so I'm shut out. :-/ - --Wade ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jan 2003 11:20:25 -0500 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: Re: edhead list As long as we're providing feedback for the new site... First off, the site *looks* great. I like the new bios and the overall look of the site. A couple of things: I agree about the Flash navigation. You're turning away a *lot* of potential viewers. A website is a great tool to promote something and the easier it is for people to view it the more useful it is. Flash is a great tool for certain things but, in my opinion at least, site navigation isn't one of them. Sound samples: Are mp3 samples possible? Real Player is slightly less evil than, say, The Most Evil Thing You Can Possibly Imagine. Just some feedback. I do like the site and it's good to see the band updating it.
