OK, people. Snap out of your post-FalconRidge [1] stupors and let's talk live music. Who have you seen lately, who knocked your socks off, who are you seeing in the near future? Etc etc. I'll go first. Two very nice first-time experiences for me this summer: Willy Porter, and Glen Phillips (yes, as in "formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket"). Both doing the guy-and-a-guitar thing, both outstanding. Both totally engaging, funny, and in between the funny banter, each song lovelier than the one before it. Also: Damn, can Willy Porter play. And further also: you should know that Glen Phillips digs Greg Brown, and that makes him A-OK in my book. In shortif either of these guys comes to your town... run, don't walk. What's to come: well, the only things I have actual tickets for at the moment are Bruce Cockburn at the Birchmere this Saturday, and John Gorka in November. But I am resolved not to miss another chance to see Todd Snider (he's playing at the Ramshead in October), and I want to catch Richard Shindell at the Point (he's probably coming closer, but I just love the Point) in October, too. I haven't seen him solo yetonly with Cry Cry Cry. Next? Peace, ellen [1](or whatever festivals you went to this summer.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 11:36:06 EDT From: Shellyus@aol.com Subject: Re: Come on music lovers, wake up! hey!!! i was awake!!!! *grin* ok...well...my PLANS for post FRFF were to see dar williams and phil roy and old john gorka at the 'concerts under the stars' at king of prussia. unfortunately my {former} car had other plans. i also missed richard shindell and lucy kaplansky shortly before FRFF, so i just -may- hafta see him at the point..*g* so the concert i'm seeing is....um......some robbie schaefer person at jammin java on friday night..... anybody heard o' this guy???? shelly who is in the thick of arranging and planning the media theatre EFO show on sept 21st, so if anyone wants inside info, email me.{yay plugs!} ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 11:48:14 -0400 From: Ellen Buckley Subject: Re: Come on music lovers, wake up! - --- Shellyus@aol.com wrote: > so the concert i'm seeing is....um......some robbie > schaefer person at jammin java on friday night..... oops. ummm, yeah. robbie. friday. i didn't forget, really. peace, ellen (ok, i forgot, but only for that period of time during which i was writing that email. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 11:58:52 -0400 From: "Christopher Evans" Subject: RE: Come on music lovers, wake up! Okay, can I just say, as a DC area denizen, that Jammin Java rocks? The place used to be a Christian coffeehouse but was bought out by some *musicians* (what a concept) and is now quite the hopping place. All this to say that I finally got to see Danielle Howle live there a few days ago. She was hilarious, as anyone who has heard/seen her act can attest. Like EFO, the music (good as it is) is about half the experience. She's coming back to JJ in November, I'm told. > Also: Damn, can Willy Porter play. Oh a Greenville person. I'll be there as I live in Greenville also. I've seen EFO many many times. Matter of fact I ran sound for them the first time they were here and did a live in store at a local record store (horizon) I saw the Mark O Connor show with them also. Ok, when it comes to non EFO concerts I've seen this summer it starts and ends with two words: Bruce Springsteen. We were lucky enough to get tickets and once again it was like going to the church of Rock & Roll. If you haven't heard his new album, The rising, yet, get it. Thank goodness Bruce decided to try to put some of the emotions of this past year into song - rather than that Rah, Rah, the USA will stick a boot up your butt, other post 9-11 music that's out there. (not counting 9-Eleven Relief of course) I also saw Shawn Colvin at the Birchmere a few days before Bruce - a disappointment in my book, having seen her over a dozen times in as many years. I expected a little more for my 45 bucks. Jen > >OK, people. Snap out of your post-FalconRidge [1] stupors and let's >talk live music. So now there's nothing on my agenda until the Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, MI 9/6-9/8, which will feature tons 'o great music including Buddy and Julie Miller and the Hot Club of Cowtown with Johnny Gimble. EFO will be at the State Theater (or is it the Michigan Theater???) in Ann Arbor on 11/8, a departure from their usual show at the Ark, so that will be exciting - a much larger venue! Also have Todd Snider, Iris Dement, Ellis Paul, and Peter Mayer to look forward to in the coming coupla months. (Shameless plug - I am SOOOOOO totally enamoured with Peter Mayer, I can't WAIT to see him live...check him out if you ever have the chance) On a non-EFO topic...I am a HUGE fan of Tish Hinojosa...and am crushed to hear of her arrest at the border a coupla weeks ago for smuggling drugs in from Mexico. Did anyone else hear about this? Maybe one day EFO will play there. They'd be a natural.
