I am still out here. It was an immense joy to rejoin the rest of the world, and attend the Davidson show last friday [ that would be my alma mater, c/o 1996 ], at our new student union's performance hall. Geoff and some other folks are working on getting the show available to the masses, as am I. In a very strange and wonderful way, what I had expected to be a difficult event for me, was a healing, and fun event. See... Carol and I had met at an EFO show, as I might have mentioned those months ago. As for police tactics... keeping drunks from driving is a big deal. It was to me even before my tragedy, but at the same time, I do have to find it dispicable of a police force to arrest a DD, and thus discourage their participation in keeping drunks from getting behind the wheel. It's stupid. Perhaps someone who lives in that town can write a letter to the newspaper editor. Something like that might help get the cops back on their beats, preventing the drunk from driving, and helping encourage designated drivers and cab services to flourish. With one caveat, though... If someone is engaging in awful conduct, ie, drunk and DISORDERLY conduct, the police are well within their bounds to arrest them. Occasionally, the men and women in blue congregate around my hometown club, Ziggy's, and wait after a show to catch those on various substances and prevent them from getting any further down the road. I'd rather see them do that than to have someone else be senselessly traumatized, maimed, injured, raped, or killed. Thanks to all for your good wishes and prayers. I need them. I am doing better... i shed my leg brace on friday, and I'm down to one crutch, a cane is soon to follow for a while, until my strength and balance get better. I hope that I'm misunderstanding you, but it sounds like you're suggesting that policemen aggressively preventing drunk driving is disgusting. I'd have to whole-heartedly disagree. While it may perhaps be annoying to the sober guy who also gets followed and tested, I think the benefits far outweigh the annoyances to a few people. I would much rather have a policeman stop a drunk driver before he's driven 5 feet than after he's driven 5 miles and into the car of an innocent victim. I think that more policemen should be doing things like this. Your average intoxicated joe-schmoe is much more likely to do the responsible thing and call a cab if he knows there's a policeman waiting outside the door. That is a very good thing. Like I said, I hope I'm just misunderstanding you, but I had to speak up. I've never lost anyone to drunk driving before, but I'm scared to death that someday I might. > > HOB is really slimey, i have to agree with Ron on this one. ;) > This I will definitely agree with, however. I try to avoid the overcrowded, atmosphereless HOB in Boston as much as possible. I'd much rather continue to see EFO in places like the Iron Horse and Club Passim. =) My first EFO show was at Club Passim and boy was it amazing! I shudder to think of HOB in comparison. - -Chris > Jess > > ----Original Message Follows---- > From: "Ron Rosen" > To: > Subject: Re: CA Edheads: Fall tour > Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 06:30:47 -0700 > > > The Roxy in Hollywood is also a possible venue. The mascot is not an actually turkey but a person in a costume, so it really doesn't look all that much like an actual holiday main course. The mascot, teams and students are more commonly referred to as "Hokies". While many people think that a hokie is a castrated turkey, the word "hokie" actually has no meaning (at least with this spelling). "Hokie" comes from the Virginia Tech fight song, "So give a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi, Rae, Ri, old V.P.I." And to confuse the issue even more, the official name of Virginia Tech" is "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" - hence the abbreviation "V.P.I." I hope this helps, and everyone please note that I am making NO VALUE STATEMENTS about Tech or any other university, college, trade school or any other sort of educational establishment - PLEASE DO NOT FEEL THE NEED TO HATE ME!!! While the mascot is "Hokies," the costumed representation is called the "Hokie Bird." Kind of redundant, but it's OK with me.
