I bought my tickets today and they said they'd had a ton of requests and had sold a bunch of tickets. In fact, so many folks had called, that they started selling tickets several days early. This ought to be a kick-ass show as the EM only holds about 125 people. I'd love to hook up with anyone who's coming to the show!! I must give a caveat - - I'm bringing my 15 year old son and my 17 year old Russian exchange student - - she loves EFO - particularly the 9-11 CD. Hmm. Hope to see you at the show. Yeah, I don't blame them. Last I heard, they were trying to play the Great American Music Hall, which would be great. There's really no more room at the Freight. I get the feeling that the dearth of venues is a trouble with many many cities, actually. With the notable exception of San Francisco, which has venues in every conceivable size from weensy (Last Day Saloon) through enormous (the field in Golden Gate Park) and especially a nice selection of midsize rooms (GAMH, Slim's), most places really don't have all that many venues. Sacramento, where I live, has a terrible scene (especially with *sniff* *sob* The Palms closing *waaaaah!*), with a few bars, the Crest Theater, and Arco Arena comprising pretty much everything. (This is where I tie it all back to EFO.) So when I asked Robbie, "Why don't you start playing bigger venues in LA? [1] Clearly you've outgrown McCabe's," he said, "Because there's no place to go." The next step up from the bars/folk club circuit was apparently some place like the House of Blues, in the ~1000 person range. Now why, I wonder, does this happen? Is there some subtle economic reason why small venues (say, <200) do OK, big ones (say, >1000) do OK, but midrange ones tank? Any thoughts on this? > I remember after the McCabe's show last year Robbie mentioning that they > really hate the two show a night experiance, that it's exhausting, that by > the second set it's hard to keep the energy up and they feel that it's > basically a waste of resources A thought: Why don't they spread two shows over two nights? Wouldn't the venue welcome that? Think about it: if EFO routinely sells out a 200-seat room for two shows in one night, doesn't that imply that they could sell out two shows in two nights? Wouldn't the venue be happy to book a sure thing for two nights? And the band, of course, would be happier. It looks like a win/win thing--but since nobody's doing it, there must be a good reason why not. Any insights? > and my memory's a little sketchy. Even if the band/artist has exhibited drawing power at another venue they don't want to take the risk. >A thought: Why don't they spread two shows over two nights? Wouldn't the >venue welcome that? Iwould assume it's the same reason they won't be doing massive tours in CA anymore (or go up to Seattle) -- don't want to be away from the family, etc anymore than they have to. And touring out here is really stressful/hard/demanding. One more day may not mean much to us, but we get to go home at the end of the evening, they have to go to another hotel. >Gets rusty and cruelly mangles whatever happens to fall in? I like the GAMH, although parking's a bitch, but I'm wondering if the Freight & Salvage still do big shows in the church down the road. It seems like that place had capacity comparable to GAMH. As for McCabe's, well, it's nice, but I've seen bathrooms larger than that place. The Troubadour would be a step up, as would the Coach House. (Side note: Last time TMBG played at the Coach House, Mudd students made up around 15% of the audience, courtesy of me and a poor friend of mine who ended up charging over $1000 worth of tickets to his credit card to simplify things).
