I had the same reaction--I'm glad people are glad that Ani will be at FRFF. But if her "fanclub" comes, then IMHO it's a decidedly mixed blessing. You've heard the old saw about wanting to be a nonconformist just like everyone else? That's what these people were--standard issue nonconformists. It was like some kind of weird army. You had these packs of people who were there for Ani and ONLY for Ani (because Ani surpasseth all these lesser acts, of course), and made a special point of sharing that information with everyone. Then, the culmination: Ani's mainstage performance Saturday night. Thanks to Jessica's heroic feat of getting up at 6 AM to put down a blanket, we had a great spot. I wouldn't even have minded if the Ani-bots had ASKED, since sharing blankets is a fine FRFF tradition, but NO. They crowded in, cautiously at first, and then unapologetically. When we tried to stem the hordes--"Hey, guys, this is our blanket, and we're expecting friends" [1]--we were ignored. When we escalated--"Look, this is OUR blanket, belonging to US, so please get off it NOW"--they turned and yelled at us that we should "show Ani a little respect". Harumph. Ani's show was good (you all may hate me, but I've never really gotten into her stuff), but the fanclub really put a damper on my day. Although, on the bright side, there IS a funny story from that summer involving Joe Murphy and two Ani-fans. - --nicole twn [1] Which was true. We were sitting with a bunch of Fruheads and some of them had gone for a quick bite. *** "Rides first, THEN food."--helpful advice from the California State Fair commission Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 17:57:22 -0400 From: "Kerry Frey" Subject: Re: FR artists > Although, on the bright side, there IS a funny story from that summer > involving Joe Murphy and two Ani-fans. [As relayed by Julie later that day] Dancin' Joe grooved to Farmer Brown (that was the first time I ever got to see him bust a move - a definite highlight!). Then walked up the center isle, back to his seat. As he was walking up the isle two girls were walking towards him ... dum dum dum - topless! His jaw dropped and Julie said his expression was hilarious! She started BUSTING UP during the last part of FB and almost couldn't finish the song she was laughing so hard. I didn't know why until later ... Ah... crazy hippie folk festivals. ;> Jesso - ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Kerry Frey" To: Subject: Re: FR artists Date: Mon, 29 Apr 2002 17:57:22 -0400 > Although, on the bright side, there IS a funny story from that summer > involving Joe Murphy and two Ani-fans.
