Not knowing what to expect in terms of driving time, location, venue, etc. I'm afraid I forced my friends to leave Lansing a WEE bit earlier than needed...when we got to the Pinnacle center there was not a soul to be seen - except for ROBBIE, who was walking from Harvey the RV into the venue carrying a change of clothes. I'm afraid I also embarrassed my friends by acting like a star-struck teenager. Oh well - after all, this is EFO! I'm not sure what the Pinnacle Center is used for; it looks like the convention wing of a big hotel - without the hotel. The concert took place in a large 'ballroom' of sorts - a stage set up in the center, large video screens on either side, and chairs set up on the main floor. We had to settle for the second row, as the first row was reserved for VIP's and season-ticket holders. Opening act Rachael Davis was pretty good. I must admit she wasn't my style, and so I will reserve judgement. I will say that she had quite a following from Cadillac in the audience, and was very well received. EFO, well, they rocked. They made the most of the giant video screens, Mike announcing that it was their first Jumbotron gig, and made quite a spectacle later over making sure he shook his butt directly at the camera. He also joked about God being the main industry in Grand Rapids, 'Michigan's Second Largest City'. They all LOOKED good, too! Julie was in rare form in black pants and a black lace blouse. Mike was particularly dapper in a dark blue suit and red t-shirt. Robbie, I think, was in black...Eddie seemed thinner than when I saw him last, in September. Anyway - did I mention that they ROCKED? The set list: Quick Loitering in the Lobby Number Six Driver The Best of Me - I LOVE seeing this one live; ranks right up there with 'Monotony' in terms of facial expressions Great Day - this was a special thrill, having had to forgo it last September, cuz Julie just couldn't sing it while pregnant...I had goosebumps through the ENTIRE song... This My Town - I'd never heard the bumblebee story behind this song 1000 Sarahs Atlantic...sniff, sniff, I love this song Santa Margherita Then Eddie's drum solo - phenomenal, amazing, mind-boggling as usual - Mike said 'when you have the world's best percussionist, of COURSE you're gonna name the band after him!!' - which led into Irish Dream Old Dominion Candido and America Eddie's Concubine - wherein Mike did the aforementioned butt-wiggling on camera Encore 1 - Just Another Folk Song About a Train - during which Mike did the rhyming band introductions just like on the live CD, which was hilarious...and Shelly, forgive me, but even though I was taking a set list, I didn't manage to jot the intros' down. And I'm old, and it's been 4 days now, and for the life of me I can't remember 'em...anyway, suffice it to say they were funny, as usual. Encore 2 - Down to a River to Pray - which was goose-bumpy, as usual. They had a table set up in the lobby, and the band was there right away for signing. Mike changed into the coolest T-shirt - a Tommy the Canexican shirt that someone had made for him, with 'Tommy' across the top and a Mexican flag with a maple leaf on it...too cool. Julie had pictures of her kids; they're adorable...I got an autographed drumstick from Eddie, and got a special sort of thrill, as a fan(atic) when and Julie looked up and said 'Suzie Tee!' when I got up to the table A local artist had done a commemorative poster for the event, and was selling signed prints to raise money for Kendall Art School, so I got one and had the band sign it...it's very cool. My only regret is that I'd forgotten my camera, cuz the photo opportunities at the table after the show were really great. Anyway...it was a great night! From the web site, it seems likes it's used to hold business meetings and banquets and such. If you looked up at the ceiling, you could see grooves where I assume portable walls could be moved. From what I could tell, it looks like you could trap people in one corner in a room without doors. Can't say I liked it much as a concert venue, but if EFO is trying to move up to larger venues, I suppose it has a theoretical larger capacity than the Ark. > Opening act Rachael Davis was pretty good. She reminds me Katryna Nields with her "Hey, cool, I'm on stage! How neat!" attitude. I thought her cover of a Dylan song (You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, if cursory Google searching combined with lyrics from memory is meaningful) was damn good. The CD was underwhelming on first listen, but I'll try again sometime when I'm not falling asleep driving home. All in all, easily the best opening act for EFO I've seen, not counting those that I knew about beforehand (GBS, DVN). Oh, and hearing all the audience comments and how young she was made me feel really old and washed up :P > Quick > > Loitering in the Lobby > > Number Six Driver > > The Best of Me - I LOVE seeing this one live; ranks right up there with > 'Monotony' in terms of facial expressions > > Great Day - this was a special thrill, having had to forgo it last > September, cuz Julie just couldn't sing it while pregnant...I had > goosebumps through the ENTIRE song... > > This My Town - I'd never heard the bumblebee story behind this song > > I was kinda surprised that all the patter for this show went over so well with the older audience. Set list's in the car, and I'm too lazy to go find it. I wish you could have seen the disturbed look on my girlfriend's face when I named the song from the chord Robbie strums for tuning at the beginning. (Okay, maybe it was a lucky guess. But the chord's distinctive, and I was right, dammit). > Eddie's Concubine - wherein Mike did the aforementioned butt-wiggling on > camera > > Encore 1 - Just Another Folk Song About a Train - during which Mike did the > rhyming band introductions just like on the live CD, which was > hilarious...and Shelly, forgive me, but even though I was taking a set > list, I didn't manage to jot the intros' down. [1] peace, ellen [1] no, not the actual thing. i was there for that; i know it happened. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 17:34:19 -0400 From: "John Ryan" Subject: Re: Hudsonville MI 4/19 I love trying to guess the song from what chord Robbie strums as well (Not to mention where he capos or if Mike picks up a guitar himself). Like for Farmer Brown, which Robbie and Mike have faked people out with by setting up their capos like they're going to play it, then put them down. Old Dominion is an easy one to pick out. So is Candido with the tuning and funky capo setting. Yes, Operator is easy to spot too. I tend to do this with a lot of bands though as well, as sometimes it spoils the set list for me! If he mentions being in France, it's Stupid American; if Italy, Santa Margherita. :) - --nicole the "I can name that song in one verse." "I can name that song in one line."
