It was our 7th show in the last year (talk about spoiled!) since we first saw them at Somerville last April, and we had been counting down the hours for the past two weeks. We brought my parents along, and I was very much looking forward to the banter -- it's a large part of how we hyped up efo. I felt that some connection was *definitely* missing -- it felt like Mike was just *off * until the Johns left. Only then did we get some really good witty silliness. There was a couple of good jokes in there beforehand, but it felt good to have just the four of them by themselves towards the end of the show. I, without a doubt, enjoyed the show with the Johns. It was snazzier, and I dug hearing some of the old stuff. I thought they added a little something new and fun, but it wasn't the EFO I wanted to share with my parents -- at least not at their first show. Anyway, are we starting to get psyched for frff? Or are we waiting til after the cruise to start? - -Erika - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 12:10 AM Subject: RE: Two Johns > john jennings and jon carroll are primarily members of mary chapin carpenter's band. they are not new additions to EFO in the sense of becoming full fledged members. i was also at the most excellent sat show in somerville and i think mike mentioned at least once that the jo(h)ns were just on a little mini-tour with EFO. > > the last time i got to see EFO play was at FRFF last summer, so this weekend's show was a real treat. between the older songs dusted off and the newer songs, i loved every minute of it. i didnt notice any lack of banter, myself, maybe because i felt they were in fine form for the banter we did hear. that's just me. > > other than that, i dont have much to add to the other reviews. it's always a treat to see one of my faves within minutes' walk of home, and i look forward already to seeing them this summer. next up: dar williams on wednesday. it's a week of folk heaven :-) > > > amy p. > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > mail2web - Check your email from the web at > http://mail2web.com/ . ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 08:48:38 -0400 From: "Marli Porth" Subject: Re: Sommerville show: Pre-show music? How long to go? 3months . . . tooo long! anyway, just my two cents. nichole Shellyus@aol.com wrote: Erika wrote: ~Anyway, are we starting to get psyched for frff? This is from the local newspaper in Springfield, MA. "....As if jumping from clubs to theaters wasn't enough pressure for a young group. Nickle Creek had the added pressure of following a brilliant opening act. That you may not have heard of folk group Eddie From Ohio only proves there is no justice in the music business. Led by singer Julie Murphy, the band was thoroughly entertaining through a one-hour set that wandered through folk, jazz, and inspirational gospel. The band received a standing ovation." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 11:18:16 -0400 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: FRFF question I've never been. My wife and I are avid campers as well as folk music fans. We've always wanted to go to the fest and at the EFO show the other night we saw the lineup and we got interested even further. The only problem is, we're due to have a baby any day now. Perhaps we're niave but we were hoping to take him/her camping sometime this summer. We thought the fest might be a good way to do it. I have some questions for those of you who have been to the fest, even if you don't have children: Is it possible to get in and out easily? This is probably my main concern. We'd have to leave if anything came up, such as rain or the sudden realization we're in over our heads and I'd hate to have to sit in a parking lot for hours trying to leave. Is the campground relativly clean or is it a mud bowl? Is it a big smoke-filled hippie fest? I wouldn't want any young whippersnappers hopped up on goofballs or high on the maryjane to be bothering us. I've heard the ecstasy causes people to eat babies. How crowded is it? Would we be able to find a place on the grass to watch the show or would we be jammed in with a huge mob? Am I just being stupid for even considering this? Do people often bring babies? Also, I've promised myself I will *not* be one of those parents who assumes people don't mind being around crying babies. I'll respect other people's enjoyment. I've never been to a big folk fest. My concert experience ranges from Metallica to Phish to EFO to some god-awful Pete Seger tribute. I assume it's a folk concert so people would be friendly and easy going but it's also a pretty big event. Also, how quickly does the campground get sold out? We wouldn't buy tickets until we had an idea that we could even do this. Tahnks for any help, Jim ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V5 #64 ****************************
