It was our 7th show in the last year (talk about spoiled!) since we first saw them at Somerville last April, and we had been counting down the hours for the past two weeks. We brought my parents along, and I was very much looking forward to the banter -- it's a large part of how we hyped up efo. I felt that some connection was *definitely* missing -- it felt like Mike was just *off * until the Johns left. Only then did we get some really good witty silliness. There was a couple of good jokes in there beforehand, but it felt good to have just the four of them by themselves towards the end of the show. I, without a doubt, enjoyed the show with the Johns. It was snazzier, and I dug hearing some of the old stuff. I thought they added a little something new and fun, but it wasn't the EFO I wanted to share with my parents -- at least not at their first show. Anyway, are we starting to get psyched for frff? Or are we waiting til after the cruise to start? - -Erika - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 12:10 AM Subject: RE: Two Johns > john jennings and jon carroll are primarily members of mary chapin carpenter's band. they are not new additions to EFO in the sense of becoming full fledged members. i was also at the most excellent sat show in somerville and i think mike mentioned at least once that the jo(h)ns were just on a little mini-tour with EFO. > > the last time i got to see EFO play was at FRFF last summer, so this weekend's show was a real treat. between the older songs dusted off and the newer songs, i loved every minute of it. i didnt notice any lack of banter, myself, maybe because i felt they were in fine form for the banter we did hear. that's just me. > > other than that, i dont have much to add to the other reviews. it's always a treat to see one of my faves within minutes' walk of home, and i look forward already to seeing them this summer. next up: dar williams on wednesday. it's a week of folk heaven :-) > > > amy p. > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > mail2web - Check your email from the web at > http://mail2web.com/ . ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 09:46:00 -0400 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: Re: Two Johns I was also at the show. Other than the sore butt and kneecaps from those extra-special-comfy seats in the balcony, I enjoyed myself. I had mixed feelings about the Wall Of John. A few songs in the first set sounded a bit too "full." I don't know how else to describe it. One of the reasons I like EFO is that they do so much, just enough it seems, with the four of them. It was hard to make out the individual instruments, Robbie's chords, or Mike's bass. On the other hand, songs like Atlantic, Minnesota 1945, Eddie's Concubine, Train Song, and one or two more were *amazing* with the added musicians. They can add the Johns anytime. The jams were also nice, especially Train Song and the beginning of Rolling Pin. Most of all, I got the sense that the band were enjoying themselves with the additions. To me that's what matters. One of the reasons I like going to EFO shows is because the band always seems to be having such a good time. The fact that they can still crack each other up after all these years means a lot. Saturday night was no exception. They all seemed grateful to have the Johns backing them up. Anything that makes the four of them happy (short of converting to a Christian heavy metal band) makes me happy for them. I also like when bands do different things. So I guess I enjoyed this show a lot, because it was different, but I hope the next time I see them it's just the four of them again. I feel like an elderly Muppet... People are asking me, "How was the EFO show on Friday". I tell them, "Did you see the movie "Great Balls Of Fire". There was a part in the movie when Jerry Lee Lewis and (I think it was) Chuck Berris were doing a show together and they disagreed who should open. It was finally decided that Jerry Lee Lewis open. He went on stage and tore the place apart, set the piano on fire, and left the stage with not a single person sitting. That's what EFO did to Nickle Creek." I'd say that 85 percent of the people at the show were Nickle Creek fans. After the show, that would be a different story. EFO's stage presence in Northampton was out of this world. Less than a second after their last note played, about 1 hour and a couple of minutes after they started, the entire audience of 1100+ people were on their feet. I don't doubt that Nickle Creek play's good music, but they could have learned a lesson from EFO on how to work a croud. Oh yeah. Saturday's show was really good too. But warning, If you are going to a show a the Somerville Theater. GET TICKETS EARLY! The balcony was the most uncomfortable place in the world. No legroom, no air circulation, and 90 degrees. But the show was great, even with the John's. That's all. - - Jim Raimo saying, "See you on the cruise" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 10:30:32 -0400 From: "Jim Merullo" Subject: Re: EFO Friday and Saturday shows. >"There was a part in the movie when > Jerry Lee Lewis and (I think it was) Chuck Berris " So *that's* what he did before hosting the Gong Show! :-) Jim - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 10:25 AM Subject: EFO Friday and Saturday shows. > People are asking me, "How was the EFO show on Friday".
