And I enjoyed the phenomenal Northampton, MA show Friday nite. Smoking! I picked up 3 cds, a shirt and a buncha stickers at the show. My buddy and I headed over to FitzWilly's pub immediately following the show, and drank several gallons of beer while talking music. So here's the kicker: Sitting 3 stools down in the trendy yet tired watering hole was young Sara Watkins from the headlining band Nickel Creek! Since I bought no merch from NiggelCreak, I somewhat sheepishly slurred to Sara something about "Pleesh shign my Eddie shirt, if you pleezh. She kindly obliged and now I've got the Eddie 'cowshirt' with Sara's sig. Cool! Wish I'd have met Julie instead tho... Okeydoke then. Nuff bout me... I was wondering what everyone thought about the two johns... I was with four friends, three of whom have heard or seen EFO before. We all liked the *sound* created by having the two Johns there, but we felt that there was something about the previous concerts we'd been to that was missing... something raw, something primal, something about the connection with the audience. Also, I didn't hear Mike's guitar nearly as much with all the other instruments going on. We all agreed the show was kickass, but it just wasn't the same in some subtle way. > first set: > Minnesota 1945 It's funny, every time I see EFO live they seem to do a song that I just somehow failed to enjoy on the album, but live I hear something in it I didn't before and find my love of the song forever after. Tonight it was Minnesota 1945. > continents of time* I was *so* psyched that they played Continents of Time, I *love* that song, it's so exquisitely melodic. > second set: > don't think twice, it's all right (bob dylan) Their cover of that is so awesomely beautiful, and the song so marvelously shows off their vocal talents, this is another one that I just about cried tears of joy when they started playing it. > eddie's concubine I keep forgetting how *fast* they play that in concert, so much faster than the album version! > second encore: > down in the river to pray One of the friends who was with me was another friend's 60-something year old mother... she'd never seen EFO before and has only heard a couple of the older songs off of CD... I was greatly amused to notice she was singing along with this one... she apparently just knew the song from church. > ok, the ones with asterisks (i may have missed a few that should be in > this category) are old stuff they've pulled out since the johns gave > them a "botox shot"--"these songs are TIGHT! but they'll loosen in > about three weeks," as mike put it. lol. are there mp3s floating of > those? live or otherwise? i just have to order the rest of the cds, > don't i? Yup, kinda. :) > :-p and did anyone tape tonight's show? Yeah, did anyone tape tonight's show? I have nice whizzy computers I can use to help you turn it into a CD... :) > a highlight of the evening: the older woman sitting 2 seats down from > me was singing EVERY word of eddie's concubine. cracked me up. i LOVED > the diversity of the crowd, though. i just loved everything. Given that the age range in my little group was 29 to mid-60's, we loved the diversity of the crowd too, we all felt like we fit in. I was also pleased to just run into my neighbors from two houses down, and an old friend from my science fiction club. > i'm sure others will have more eloquent comments, but i thought i'd get > the setlist out there and give my first-show impressions. I went to three EFO concerts last year, in Somerville MA, Atlanta GA, and Marblehead MA, and I have three more concerts on CD, so I have a pretty good idea what an average EFO concert is like... what struck me, and my friends, about tonight's concert is that they had an unusually high concentration of more melodic songs and fewer of the country-ish ones or humorous ones, and moreover, they *really* didn't joke around as much as usual. There was fairly little patter between songs and Mike barely made fun of the people in the box seats. Also they didn't do an autograph session... which I know they don't always do, but more often than not anyway. We were just kinda curious if they were a bit tired today, or just focused on working well on stage with the two Johns, or what. Mind you, the concert was kickass and we love EFO and this isn't a complaint, we were just kinda curious about why this concert seemed different. > CAN I BE JULIE WHEN I GROW UP?! PLEEEASE?! what? i'm already pretty > much grown up, and there are no vacancies for "julie murphy wells"??? > DAMN! :-p Oh heck, I think *I* want to be Julie Murphy Wells, and I'm a guy! Julie seemed to be in particularly fabulous voice this evening, every note perfect, every nuance full of soul. And while I must say that the Marblehead concert last year was the experience of a lifetime (it was in a tiny venue, I was seated perhaps 6 feet from Robbie, Julie, and Mike, and somehow the connection between band and audience was utterly magical), the one big advantage of Julie being no longer pregnant is that now she can dance again. :) I love watching Julie dance with the music and groove along while she sings, she's just so alive. It's one of the things that first attracted me to the band. My 60-something friend Connie remarked over and over after the concert how beautiful Julie's voice is and how strongly she sings and how she's a lot like Janice Joplin only much better. I was kind of in the nosebleed section, but it looks like Robbie has grown a cute little goatee? We were a little bummed he didn't do any of his solo album songs tonight. I was hoping for "full of herself" or maybe "30 second love affair". Eddie did his usual unbelievably awesome solo. At one point he was slamming so hard with the drumsticks that I seriously believe I saw pieces of the sticks flying off. Mike is, of course, always cute. We were really bummed we didn't get either "Monotony" or "Tommy the Canexican" from him tonight. (Personally, I could take or leave "Tommy", but one of my friends absolutely loves it.)
