So just a quick report for everyone, as I know Shelly will be much more detailed later.... Ellis Paul was wonderful, as he did a few songs with the Jellyfish Blues Band backing him up (Just Mike, Robbie, and Eddie) as well as a song with Julie doing backing vocals. The surreal event that happened during his set was how he mentioned that this was the first-ever standup show he's played, and so everyone on the main floor sat down, except for people in the back, the front row, and one scant guy who decided to be a non-conformist. Ellis called it the anti-wave. EFO came out with the 5th EFOer, John Jennings on electric piano, hammond organ, and accordion. He added a lot to some back-catalog songs like Rolling Pin, Continents Of Time, Fly South, Step Into The Outside, and his piano intro to Oh My Brother. He also lent his vocal stylings to an a cappella version of the old Curtis Mayfield song, "It's Alright" (Also covered by Huey Lewis and the News). Other songs included Quick, #6 Driver, Candido & America, Stupid American, Minnesota 1945 (by request), Old Dominion, Hey Little MEN (Mama's gonna get some sleep tonight!), Loitering In The Lobby (with extended Eddie intro), Woman Of Faith (with extended Robbie intro), Atlantic (Also by request by my good friend, who has a loved one across the ocean), and Eddie's Concubine. So yes, during Eddie's Concubine, there was a rush to the front, and a couple of guys thought it would be a good idea to get on one's shoulders and dance around like that. It was quite a site, but just a BIT too much for an EFO show. Eventually, the one guy fell off the shoulders (They had to be loaded drunk), but I can say that EFO is the only acoustic band that I know that can encite a mosh pit. After Old Dominion, a LOT of people were requesting Farmer Brown, and EFO teased them by having Mike pick up his guitar and having the capo settings on the guitar like they were going to do it. But instead, they had the Kennedys join them on stage (SURPRISE!) to do a number with them, The Band's "Weight". Robbie, John, Julie, and Pete Kennedy each took a verse. I tell you, it's like getting a Falcon Ridge appetizer! I love folk shows where they have everyone on stage jamming! They came back for a 2nd encore doing Down To The River To Pray. Late night for me, I'm beat. Enjoy the shows this weekend folks! I hope Nicklecreek will come out to jam with them on Old Dominion, to truly make it the bluegrass song it is! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 11:28:05 -0400 From: Ellen Buckley Subject: Re: EFO - 4/11/02 - Bowery Ballroom John Ryan wrote: > Can I just saw that we witnessed the first ever mosh pit at an EFO show? nope, sorry. i saw one at the virginia wine fesrtival 2 summers ago. yeesh. that was an interesting crowd. nice review-- did you mean Jon Carroll though? he's the piano guy. john jennings plays gee-tar when he sits in with EFO. peace, ellen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 12:27:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Matthew Velazquez Subject: Re: EFO - 4/11/02 - Bowery Ballroom You mean the shirtless freak who was randomly grabbing unsuspecting girls and flipping them 360? Ah, wine. it wasn't just him. there really was a little mosh pit in the very front, with 5 or 6 really drunk people attempting something that didn't even closely resemble swing-dancing. or maybe they were trying to shag. who knows. it looked a lot like what we 80s punks used to call slam-dancing. ;) i had forgotten about him. *shudder* i was just waiting for him to choose the wrong unsuspecting female and wind up a with red wine vomit pinwheel effect. peace, ellen (i'm sorry. that was too much informtaion, wasn't it?) ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V5 #58 ****************************
