We didn't ALL give birth last month...) OK so last night I drove up to Philly to see Robbie play the Point, a coffeehouse just outside the Bryn Mawr campus. It rocked. Opening act was Matt Nathanson, a young guy from Boston via San Francisco who for some reason seemed to have all the young women in the audience in his pocket from the beginning of his set. I mean it was really bad. You'd think he was Joey from the New Kids or something. I liked him immediately, if for no other reason than he was able to use the word 'rad' in sentences. Frequently. I found that wildly entertaining. He played a Taylor 12 string. I didn't know Taylor made 12 strings. Check it out. mattnathanson.com. The place cleared out a little after the Matt worshipers left. Robbie's set was one of the most sharpest, most enjoyable I've seen. He played a bunch of EFO tunes, Stupid American and Candido and #6 Driver, among others. A lot of stuff came off the solo CD, and the song that got cut from Actually Not ("And you'll hear why"). I can never remember the name. The interesting bits, though, were three new songs. Fly is one written from the perspective of a 7-year-old. It's got a similar feel to Candido and #6 Driver that makes you want to sing the chorus. I could almost hear the rest of the band behind Robbie's vocal. Independence, Indiana is kind of a September 11th song, but it's done in a subtle way that's not apparent unless you're really paying attention. Think North Pacific Rain and Jack & Diane set to the tune of a poignant song like If I Had a Boat. The third new song was so new it didn't even have a title yet, but was just as charged as the other two. It's really interesting how Robbie songs are so distinct from Mike's - you can immediately tell who wrote which. The show closed with a Zeppelin cover and extended jam that Robbie's been doing for years. Last night's was the best I've ever heard it - I hope you were recording brother. The song's about ten minutes long and not a single broken string (overzealous rock-out seems to be the trademark of that particular tune). The crowd wouldn't let him continue a couple of times, they were whooping and clapping so loud. The two-song encore finished with Lyle Lovett, which was totally perfect for the moment. It was totally worth the 2am return to Baldymore and the $8 in tolls. Since when did 95 at MD-DE become $4? I guess I haven't driven to Boston in a while. Who else was there? Other opinions? - -T ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 11:29:12 -0800 (PST) From: Diane Mittler Subject: Re: Robbie @ The Point 1/26/02 Hey all! The new stuff sounds great! If someone else was there recording, maybe you'd consider putting it up on Seth's mp3 site for the rest of us to hear. It is great to track the development of the songs over time. There is another Robbie solo concert on the mp3 site that has an early version of #6 Driver--gotta love it! Wish Robbie would come west sometime. Even Chicago is not quite west enough for those of us in New Mexico... diane - --- Matthew Velazquez wrote: > (very little traffic this channel. If I recall correctly, a few months ago, an attendee of a Robbie solo show mentioned a forthcoming live album. I only heard this rumor once, and no Robbie-solo-show attendees since have mentioned it. Does anyone know if 1) it's getting made, and 2) if so, when? > Wish Robbie would come west sometime. Even > Chicago is not quite west enough for those of us in > New Mexico... Now, now. I only heard this rumor once, and no Robbie-solo-show attendees since have mentioned it. Does anyone know if 1) it's getting made, and 2) if so, when? When I asked Robbie back in October if he was gonna have the live solo CD to take along on this tour{mainly coz I was -at- the show he recorded it at}, he said that there were glitches/static in the recording and he was at that point taking it to his producer to see if there was any way anything could be done to correct them and make the CD happen, but he doesn't have them on the tour{ I'm helping him with his merch in some places}. So, I don't think it's gonna happen -too- soon. Or, not with -that- particular concert that he recorded anyway. Sorry to be the bearer of not-so- great-news. :( Shelly ------------------------------ End of edheads-digest V5 #10 ****************************
