Happy hunting and listening ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 22:55:41 -0400 From: Greg Grant Subject: Re: more music you shouldn't be without I will second the nomination of Pierce Pettis and add his mentor to the list, the late Mark Heard. His last three albums are pure genius, particularly "Dry Bones Dance," which sounds like a Cajun hoedown spun wonderfully out of control. Pierce Pettis has opened the last four of his albums with a Mark Heard song. And if you can find it, there is a tribute album featuring Pettis, Bruce Cockburn and Victoria Williams, that is surprisingly good as tribute albums go. Bruce Cockburn is on record as saying that Mark Heard was his favorite songwriter. In addition, although I could recommend thirty or forty artists, I will stick to a few: Kate Jacobs is a singer/songwriter who has led an extremely interesting life and writes beautiful short stories that masquerade as four minute folk/pop tunes. Dave Schramm, formerly of Yo La Tengo and currently of the Schramms adds just the right guitar. Try "Hydrangea." Eddi Reader: why she's not famous in the US boggles my mind, but apparently they appreciate her as she deserves in the UK. Gorgeous voice, excellent songs. Try "Angels and Electricity" on Compass Records. Buy it from http://www.pastemusic.com and stick around and listen to some samples. They sell only really talented artists there. The new Innocence Mission CD, "Small Planes" is also really fine. Their drummer quit the band, and they've been going with a more acoustic sound, which is more evident on "Birds of My Neighborhood" than this one, which is collection of unreleased tracks that hangs together remarkably well, as if they had been recorded together. And Don Peris' solo album (guitarist for IM) is really a remarkable album as well. If you'd like to hear more of what i think is pretty good, tune in to my radio station (see sig). EFO is featured along with a boatload of singer/songwriters and many obscure artists and musicians you should support. Greg Grant http://woodsmeister.tripod.com Hey! I'm on the radio!
